Califa LLE debut results from Cali

Recommended Posts

Califa Lucha Libre Estilo debuted at the Roccapulco Night Club in San Francisco, CA on 8/3. They drew an estimated 200 (about 80% capacity) for their first effort. The building itself is great, although it is in what I`m told is a very bad neighborhood. Mad Mikey (Crash Holly) made three appearances on the show, including refereeing the match between Donovan Morgan and Michael Modest for the Pro Wrestling NOAH jr. heavyweight title. Modest and Morgan had what was reportedly a strong match, which started as a straight wrestling bout before becoming a hardcore brawl all over the building. Mikey counted them both out, then said he was declaring it a falls count anywhere match. Modest gave Morgan several suplexes on his head and then gave him his finisher, the reality check (kryptonite krunch) for the pin. Holly attacked Morgan afterward and gave him his old finisher from his Northern California Erin O`Grady days. Vic Grimes came out. He and Mikey then had a back-and-forth on the mic. Mikey and Grimes have legit heat with each other, which led to some, shall we say, entertaining comments. Holly remarked, ``I had to carry that fat bastard Albert to a good match many times.`` Point for Holly. He also said he got the Hardcore belt over in the WWF more than Mick Foley or Grimes ever could have. He lost me on that one. Mikey talked about he and Grimes making it to WWE based on their matches in Northern California together (for Roland Alexander`s All Pro Wrestling in 1997), and then he made it and Grimes didn`t. Grimes accused Holly of selling his car and not paying him for it. Lots of profanity. The whole point of this was to set up a match between the two at the next show. They didn`t announce a date, just shot angles to set up matches for it. By the way, somewhere in there, Holly said, ``If you wrestling fans want to learn about the business, read Matt Hardy`s book, chapters eleven and especially eight.`` I don`t know why, but I found that hilarious. Grimes won a three way match over Vinny Massaro and Dynamite D. It was supposed to be a four way with Altar Boy Luke and Kaos in there too, but ring announcer Ron Hed said he was stuck at a NAMBLA meeting. (Hed, incidentally, is moving this week to Louisville to work for OVW.) Kaos' no-show wasn't given an explanation. Massaro and Grimes were once tag partners in APW, with Massaro working as Little Dic Grimes. J.R. Benson managed D. Just a wild brawl with all sorts of weapons used. It didn`t go long but was good while it was going. Grimes press slammed Benson at one point onto Massaro and D, who were fighting outside. Grimes took a double suplex onto a stack of chairs. The SAT`s came in for their second California match, this one vs. the Thomaselli Brothers. This was reportedly a real good match with crisply-executed high spots. Maximos got over well. Apollo Khan & Hook Bomberry from IRON beat Bulldog Brian Raymond & ``Trendsetter`` Adam Thornstowe. Khan is reportedly impressive. He now sports bleached hair. Sara del Ray (Nikki) did an open challenge that was answered by Angel (former ``Hardcore Homo`` from XPW). They called this the battle of the bitches. Sara went over. She is leaving 8/20 for a very lengthy (three months-plus) tour of Japan. Another XPW veteran, Pogo the Clown, worked a tag match at this show. They called him Pogo the Paysaso Assassino (Assassin Clown). The actual main event was Scorpio Jr. retaining the IWRG Intercontinental title beating Rockero del Diablo in a short match. Scorpio had American Wild Child in his corner, while Apollo Khan was with Rockero.

I wrote this recap for HouseOfXtreme.com:

The 8/3 Califa Lucha Libre Estilo debut show called Mexican Standoff in San Francisco, CA featured several XPW stars. Mad Mikey (Crash Holly/Erin O'Grady) had a very heated confrontation with a guy who he has real-life heat with dating back to his APW days, "Vicious" Vic Grimes. Grimes beat Dynamite D (w/ another of Grimes' heated rivals [although not in real-life; they're very good friends], J.R. Benson, who managed SNUFF in XPW) and Vinnie Massaro in a three-way match. Altar Boy Luke and Kaos were supposed to compete in the match with Massaro and Grimes (it was supposed to be a four-way match), but Ron Hed of XPW, who served as the ring announcer for the show, said that Luke was stuck at a NAMBLA meeting (?). Kaos' no-show was given no explanation. Also on the show:

- Sara del Ray (a.k.a. Nikki) made one of her last U.S. appearances before leaving on 8/20 for a lengthy tour of Japan. She made an open challenge that was answered by "The Hardcore Homo" Angel. They fought in the "Battle of the Bitches." Sara won the match. Angel's match was changed last minute. He was originally scheduled to team with American Wild Child (AWC in XPW) & Jon Jon The Phenomenon vs. XPW stars The Aerial Express (Quicksilver & Scorpio Sky) & Kid Omega, but that match was changed.

- Pogo the Clown wrestled on the show as Pogo the Payaso Asesino (Assassin Clown). He was accompanied by Shane Dynasty and teamed with Chupacabras against DESTRUKTOR & Super Diablo.
