Weezer/rivers cuomo interview in guitar world

Recommended Posts

This month's issue of Guitar World has a rather interesting interview with Rivers Cuomo of Weezer (who's on the cover of the magazine, sporting his new ultra-geeky beard)

Highlights include Rivers talking about:

------------------------------------

-how the rest of the members of Weezer turned against him after his brainchild "Pinkerton" initially flopped

-the love/hate relationship with Weezer fans over Rivers' decision to disown of "Pinkerton"

-firing the group's management and Rivers' decision to take over the running of the band himself

-the internet and how it's played a part in the creation of the group's upcoming album "Maladroit"

-the music industry and how it refuses to allow artists to grow and experiment with their sound

That's always bothered me about Weezer. Pinkerton bombed yet it was 10x better than the first album. While I enjoyed the blue album, Pinkerton seemed to be sincere where the first one seemed more witty. And why is Rivers disowning Pinkerton? I think people will look at it the way they look at Paul's Boutique. Initially, a flop but an album that gets its long overdue recognition in the end.

<And why is Rivers disowning Pinkerton?>

It's kind of complicated, but the cliff note version is that the Pinkerton album was Rivers (a person who's been said to be by all accounts a very introverted person) experimenting lyrically with deeply personal songs about himself, his love life/fetish for Japanese women, and fame and that everything that could go wrong went horribly wrong with the album when it was released. It sold poorly when it first came out, critics panned it, the record label cut promotional support for the album the first chance they got, his bandmates turned against him and accusing him of ruining the group's career, and one member (Matt Sharp) quit the group rather than continue with the direction Rivers had decided to go in. As a result of this, Rivers has stated that he just wants to forget/block out that entire period of his life including the Pinkerton album and that he can't stand the fact that a large portion of his fanbase don't share his revulsion over this nasty period of his life.
