I live in NYC I've been out of work for about 3 months now, and its driving me insane.  I was laid off at the end of last year due to budget cuts made after 9/11.

I just can't seem to find another job....then again, I wasn't really looking too hard before.  It was the most foolish thing I've ever done as its cost me a lot of things and affected more people than just myself.

Anyway....I was just wondering...how many of you have jobs, what do you do, how long have you been working there, etc.

Well, what do you specialize in? I'm going to Hunter College part-time, but I work for NY State, doing PC help desk/network support-type shit. It's boring, but it's secure and it gives me time to study and watch DVDs during work hours :)

I took a Civil Service exam about 4 1/2 years ago, and they called me up for an interview a few months later. Before this, I had a lousy retail job at Barnes & Noble. The pay sucked, but it was sort of a fun environment, when all the cool people worked there.

Sorry to hear about that, Dames - hope something comes your way.

I guess my "main job" would be my lovely stint as a poor, uneducated college student...but otherwise, I'm in a work study position as a tech. support rep for the Arts & Sciences department at my university.  It's occasionally painful dealing with people that, for instance, put printer cartridges in backwards and people who don't know how to turn on Macs, but it's good hands-on experience and the pay isn't too bad at all.  It's not exactly what I really want to do in life, though, that's for sure.

Well, let me give you some of my experience.

My first job when i was 13, I swept hair in a barber shop on the weekends, off the books.  I got free haircuts out of it, so it was cool.

When i was 16, I worked as a sales rep for a freakin' knife company, and I was going to people houses with an arsenal that would make Michael Myers proud.  Unfortunately, they were so expensive that I made about 150 in commission that summer total.

Then I worked at a supermarket as a stock boy after school every day til i graduated.

I was a radio DJ at college for 2 semesters.

President of a pro wrestling club til I left school.

I worked as an assistant manager at an arcade/pool hall/bowling alley type place in my school.

I worked at the Virgin Megastore in Times Square as a stock person.

My last job was with Pitney Bowes as a Branch Administrator.  I assisted Sales Reps, and did a lot of general office work.

Wow, I didn't know I did that much.

I think you should go for a retail job or something while you're looking for something better. When employers look at your resume, they usually like to see if you're keeping busy, whether it's going to school or working. They don't like to see "blank" periods of time.

Or, if you're the entrepreneurial type, you can start some kind of business. If you have any ideas, let me know.

Well, i'm collecting unemployment, so I dont know if I should do that.  Besides, when would I have the time to find another job then?

What kind of a business could I start up....I have no freakin' clue.

This doesn't really have to do with your job troubles, but  was wondering, when and how di you get to meet all those WWF wrestlers???

Guest TheDames7

How did you know that I met all these people? I never mentioned it here at The Smarks.

Anyway, I went to the grand opening of WWF NY (VIP only :) ) and I've been to a lot of signings and stuff.  I have an autograph book with over 60 WWF Stars, and TONS of pics.  I've met most WWF superstars to be honest, and the entire McMahon family, including Linda.

I work Tech Support for a small ISP in BC Canada.  I work from 10-6 monday to friday and I have been here almost a year and a half.  I like it.  It allows to hangout on the smarksforum all day long so I can't complain.

Good luck on the job hunt too Dames...

Too bad you lost your job--and so short.  I mean I'm 5'6"/5'7" at 14, but that's okay!

Maybe you could be Tazz's manager.  :)

Dames, I can sympathize, my dad just lost his job.

As for me, I work in the meat department of a grocery store.  I've worked there for about 8 months.  Basically, I just clean the place up.

Did I see a Dames sign on Raw last night?

Guest muzanisa

I'm a student. I work for a pharmaceutical company in the holidays looking through medical dictionaries and translating stuff for salesmen. This takes about ten minutes of my day so the rest of the time I post here and sleep under my desk. I also tattoo people for money, but will never achieve my dream of living off that or being a famous saxophonist because I don't have real artistic talent.

Good luck on the job front, my advice is don't work retail as you'd be limiting yourself and you can always bullshit on a CV to cover "inactivity periods"

Guest TheDames7

That is correct...you DID see a Dames sign last night!  I used to go to school around Albany and my friends made a sign for me.  it said "Ines, Dames misses you".  Ines is my ex that i'm still pining over.

I work at mcdonald's. It sucks, the pay is porr and the people there are the most obnoxious ever. The only relief is when I'll finally snap, pick up a gun and go on a killing spree with a gun in my right and a Big mac in my left.

... DAMN!
