Strengths and weaknesses

Recommended Posts

Guest Austin3164life

I read that post about different wrestling techniques, and I thought about this subject so I decided to post it.  When we all talk about a guy's workrate if it's poor, good, or excellent, what are the strengths and weaknesses of the wrestlers we love and hate.  I'll show you guys what I mean.....

Steve Austin- St.= Relentlessness, Clever Opportunist

Wk.= Bad Knees (Fixed his neck)

Bret Hart- St.= Determination, Confidence, Smart

Wk.= Cares too much about fan opinions

Shawn Michaels- St.= Agility, Speed, Resiliency

I forgot to add on to my post.  Sorry about that guys.  Not trying to be a troll.  But anyway.....

[Cont'd]

HBK- Wk.= His courage sometimes blinds him against bigger guys

Hulk Hogan- St.= Hulks up after loads of punishment

Wk.= Not a great mat wrestler

So what do you guys think the strengths and weaknesses of these wrestlers are...

Four named above

Ric Flair

Chris Benoit

Chris Jericho

Kurt Angle

The Rock

Triple H

Owen Hart

Mick Foley

The Undertaker

Randy Savage......

Angle

Strenths: Great worker, great talker, charismatic.

Weaknesses: Inconsistant booking has switched his character from dumbass to killer so many times he can't even figure it out, poor application of Ankle Lock (standing up), and has a somewhat weak finisher (Angle slam).

Yeah, weaknesses like that have a tendency to cancel out your strengths.

Ric Flair

Strengths: Great wrestler, decent guy backstage, loads of charisma.

Weakness: Not much... though I guess his gimmick is a little over-bearing for newer fans.

Chris Benoit

Strengths: AMAZING wrestler, not a problem backstage.

Weaknesses:  Charisma, and mic skills.  He needs a manager, or he has to be a silent assasin, but a silent assasin gimmick won't get you to the top.  His size holds him down, unfortunatly.

Chris Jericho

Strengths: Also a great wrestler, loads of charisma.

Weaknesses: Hmmm, I guess his size is the only thing that holds him down.  Oh, and he had that streak of blowing spots a few months back, but that seems to have eluded him.

Kurt Angle

Strengths: Incredible, simply amazing all around.  Great on the mic, often hilarious, loads of charisma, great as a heel or a face.  Oh, and he's probably the most well rounded guy in the ring, he can do it all from mat wrestling to brawling, to high flying.

Weaknesses:  Jeez, I can't think of any.

The Rock

Strengths: Probably the most charasmatic wrestler in the WWF right now, maybe the most charasmatic ever.  I find him good on the mic, and I think he's underrated by the internet in the ring, he consistantly puts on good matches, great intensity in all of his matches.  He jobs more than most guys in his position.

Weaknesses: His gimmick is a bit tiresome, and he isn't great in the ring, but he's good.  Hollywood seems to distract him at times, he should choose between a movie career or a wrestling career.

Triple H

Strengths: Well, he CAN be a good wrestler.  He CAN be decent on the mic.  The fans appear to love him (but not enough to be the undisputed champ), and he's a great heel.

Weaknesses: Backstage politician, BIG TIME.  Slow and lumbering in the ring of late, declining mic work.  God-like run-ins, thinks he's better than everyone else.  Boning the head booker.

Owen Hart

Strengths: Tremendous wrestler, I find him as good as his brother (Bret of course).  Not a problem backstage either, funny and well liked.  Good on the mic, very entertaining.  A Hart.

Weaknesses:  He's a bit overconfident.  Not really much in the way of weaknesses.

Mick Foley

Strengths:  Probably one of the nicest wrestlers in the back.  Good wrestler, puts his body on the line for the fans, really gives it his all.  Can play a great heel, great face, and plays many gimmicks well.

Weaknesses:  I guess his look.

The Undertaker

Strengths: Not bad for a big man in terms of in ring ability when he tries, and with the right opponent.  Intimidating size, has the look of a superstar.

Weaknesses:  Doesn't give it his all, needs to be carried to good matches.  Undersells.  Stupid biker gimmick.  Can be an ass backstage, though he used to be a company man.  Nagging injuries.  Getting old.

Randy Savage

Strenghths: Good wrestler, capable of outstanding matches.  Spews charisma, crazy on the mic. A walking, talking, breathing cartoon character.

Weaknesses:  Usually only gives it his all in matches on PPV.  Held down by politics, later becoming somewhat of a politician himself.

Shane McMahon

strengths:  Gives it all his all every time he wrestles.  He is the heir to a wrestling empire, yet his gone through windows and announce tables to put over people (Angle, Test).  Good bumper.  Also, he seems to respect the business.

weaknesses:  Bad face.  Well, bad face do to him being turned both ways 27 times...classic McMahon syndrome.  He's a McMahon.  Can be sloppy in the ring at times.  He throws better punches than Vince, but that doesn't say that much.  He's a McMahon.

Angle

Strengths - Quick learner.  Had the best rookie year of anyone.  Quick, excellent on the mic, can work a variety of styles.

Weakness - The Angle Slam does look weak, but I really don't think it should have any bearing on this.  Angle is my current favorite in the WWF, so this is probably bias.

Stone Cold

Strengths - Variety of styles, good on the mic, established himself as the cornerstone of the WWF's attitude.

Weakness - Knees, gets carried away in some matches and starts moving faster than his opponent, thus the match looks strange.  Watch some of his matches with HHH.

HHH

Strengths - He's massive, alright on the mic, sleeping with Steph, A locker room leader

Weakness - Hasn't had a good match since he's been back so I would say his injury is a weakness.  Almost too big for his own good like Steiner.  There has to come a point where you just look in the mirror and say, "Where the hell did my neck go?"

Steve Austin

 Strengths:  Great brawler, Charismatic

Weakness:  Relies too much on catchphrases, Never wins a match with anything other than a stunner, Doesn't work well with midcarders

Bret Hart

Strengths:  Greatest technical wrestler of his day, Brought out good matches in very subpar opponents

Weakness:  Unwilling to put the past behind him

Shawn Michaels:

Strengths:  Bumps like a madman, Brought high risk offense to the uppercard, great arrogant heel

Weakness: Substandard finishers, Unwillingness to job away titles

Hulk Hogan:

 Strengths:  Charisma, Charisma, Charisma

 Weakness:  Age, Age, Age

Ric Flair:

Strengths: Legendary status, Very good interview skills, master of pacing and psychology in matches that go over 10 minutes

Weakness: Age, Wrestles the same exact match regardless of who he is facing

Chris Benoit:

Strengths: Can work any style of match from being the plucky underdog to the angry bully, nice signature moves

Weakness: Boring in both look and mike work, doesn't set up the crossface extremely well

Chris Jericho:

Strengths: All around decent worker, doesn't terribly disapoint in any one area

Weakness: Doesn't exceed in any one area either

Kurt Angle:

Strengths: Great at all the physical aspects of wrestling (especially mat oriented), extraordinary presence for having been in the pros for such a short time.

Weakness: Hardly ever sets up the anklelock, none of his moves string towards one particular goal

The Rock:

Strengths:  Most charismatic wrestler of his day, can get more reaction from his punches than most workers get from shooting star presses, extremely energetic, will job on demand

Weakness:  Sloppy execution and long term selling

Triple H:

Strengths: Good worker, gets across a good feeling of intensity in his interviews, slowly moving away from his knee centered offence

Weakness: Slowed down since returning from injury

Owen Hart:

Strengths: Great worker, takes the Bret Hart style and adds a plethora of high spots

Weakness: Sharpshooter finisher didn't fit in with the rest of his moveset, not charismatic enough to be at the top of a show (unless against Bret), Horrible interview

Mick Foley:

Strengths:  Ability to fall off high things, charismatic

Weakness: Not a good worker when you take away all his gimmictry, Buries coworkers to put himself over as funny

The Undertaker:

Strengths:  Intimidating aura, instantly recognizable by any WWF fan of the last 11 years, Pretty good worker for his size and age

Weakness:  Having trouble executing his elevated powerbomb finisher (offset by bringing back the tombstone and using the dragon sleeper), not a top of the card draw

Randy Savage:

Strengths:  Extremely well known figure in wrestling history, always brings intensity to his matches, one of the pioneers of high risk offence.

Weakness:  So injured that his signature offence is no longer usable, bulked up too much in order to compensate

Scott Hall:

Strengths: Unique moveset, good on the mike, plays the big bully heel very well against smaller guys, willing to job to guys he has no business jobbing to

Weakness: Personal demons, Fades into the woodwork of the nWo way too easily.

Kevin Nash:

Strengths: Size, at his best as a cocky heel

Weakness: Injury prone, loose application of the jackknife powerbomb, just like every other guy his size

Xpac:

Strengths: Draws excellent heel heat just due to his general obnoxiousness, gets tossed around like a rag doll, finally wrestling well again after some rather subpar years

Weakness:  Offense has a number of problems, 1) too kicky 2) weak finisher 3) has a bronco buster

I'm going to split this up into the Wrestling Category and the Sportz Entertainment Category, becuz they be two different things, ya'll.

Wrestling:

Ric Flair:

Strengths: Unbridled Stamina, good psychology, nice moveset.

Weakness: Phsyically not the biggest guy, and his knees act up on him. He's 53 goddamn years old!

Chris Benoit:

Strengths: The Greatest All-Around Wrestler next to Kurt Angle today. Awesome technician, also can brawl and fly.

Weaknesses: Neck problems? Maybe he could be more impactful with those chops? LOL

Chris Jericho:

Strengths: Great agility, established mat technician

Weaknesses: Concussions, sparatic, no use of fluid psychology, sans the WM18 match, where he worked HHH's knee like a MOFO.

Kurt Angle:

Strengths: You ask this man to do ANY kind of match, and he'll do it better than most people who can ONLY do that kind of match.

Weaknesses: Only glaring weakness (if any) is his high-flying ability. The Anglesault is beautiful, but it DID break Holly's arm.

The Rock:

Strengths: Ummmmmmmmmmm...I'm gonna say, athletic?

Weaknesses: No real technical expertise, submissions are more painful to watch than to execute.

Triple H:

Strengths: Big time power in a small frame

Weaknesses: Will his body hold up to the steroids?

Owen Hart:

Strengths: On par with Benoit and Angle in terms of All-Around matches. His matches with Austin and his brother are legendary in terms of workrate and technicality.

Weaknesses: He's gone. I can't think of any since he is.

Mick Foley:

Strengths: Greatest brawler behind Terry Funk

Weaknesses: He's done at the age of 35. That's too young for a wrestler!

The Undertaker:

Strengths: Strength, Agility

Weakness: Throw a believable PUNCH man!

Randy Savage:

Strengths: See WM III Steamboat/Savage. HE WAS GOLD!

Weaknesses: Kinda lost it after a few years. Hogan's shadow.

Sports Entertainment

Ric Flair:

Strengths: He held the crowd in the palm of his hadn.

Weaknesses: His WHOOOO-ing sometimes got in the way of his wrestling.

Chris Benoit:

Strength: When he talks, it's usually OK

Weakness: He's SILENT otherwise. TALK CHRIS!

Chris Jericho:

Strength: Played the pussy heel champion role to PERFECTION.

Weakness: Can he play SOMETHING now that he isn't champ?

Kurt Angle:

Strengths: PEOPLE HATE HIM as a heel.

Weaknesses: The one month he was champ last year, he sucked. Stay a heel.

The Rock:

Strength: Most charismatic man in the history of wrestling, with Sting being the only one close.

Weaknesses: Is he The Rock or is he Dwayne Johnson when he is outside the ring?

Triple H:

Strengths: Cocky Brash D-X Character was almost as good as...well, Shawn Michael's Cocky Brash D-X Character.

Weaknesses: Is he really cut out to be a face?

Owen Hart:

Strength: NUGGET! and jealous brother

Weaknesses: Two words: Hannibal Lector. He was HORRBILE as the white boy in the LOD. Only got heat when Jason Sensation did the whole HHH nose thing.

Mick Foley:

Strength: Cheap pops

Weaknesses: Any other pops whatsoever.

The Undertaker:

Strength: The Dead Man

Weakness: The Biker

Randy Savage:

Strength: "OH YEAH!"

Weakness: "SNAP INTO A SLIM JIM!"

Let me give this a whirl.

Triple H (before the injury as we all know what his weaknesses would be afterwards):

Strengths - Made everyone he wrestled against look great, was a dominant heel champion, looked and acted as intimidating as a dominant heel champion should, put on great matches, killer finisher (power), put a lot of other people in the spotlight through association (speculate about his reasoning all you like the fact remains that he did so with DX and the Radicalz)

Weaknesses - Slow and easily reversed finisher, relies on opponents offense to carry too much of the match, Stephanie McMahon Helmsley (before that it was Chyna), mic skills need work

More later. Mother Nature just came calling.

St. - Great brawler, great mat work, great charisma, great mic work.  Great as heel or face.

Wk. - Injuries have taken away a lot of his bumping ability, bitches when things dont go his way.

Bret Hart

St. - Greatest mat technician, great mic work, AWESOME ability to carry opponents, psychology, selling. Great as heel or face.

Wk. - Concussion killed his mic work, WCW reign was hampered by constant turning, stubborn.

Shawn Michaels - Great bumper, charisma out the ass, great timing. Great as heel or face.

Wk. - Politician, whiner, rarely did the job when the title was on the line.

Ric Flair - GREAT mat technicial, awesome understanding of psychology, selling, uncanny stamina. Great as heel or face.

Wk. - his body left a lot to be desired to the casual fan.

Chris Benoit - Best technical wrestler these days, selling, making his opponents look better.

Wk. - Mic Work, charmisma.

Chris Jericho - Great overall, awesome mic work.

Wk. - Victim of politics, sloppy in ring work at times, stale face character.

Kurt Angle - overall awesome.

Wk. - Face character was horrible.

The Rock - great mic skills, charisma, timing, makes others offense look great. Great as both heel or face.

Wk. - Applying submissions, throws too many right hands, no long term selling.

Triple H - decent mic skills, awesome build, GREAT character development over the years. Best as heel.

Chris Benoit:

Strength - Great worker. Makes everything look good.

Weakness - Mic skills and his character.

Chris Jericho:

Strength - Mic skills, can go from high flyer to mat wrestler. plays a great heel

Weakness - Too scrawny to be taken seriously in the main event. Lionsault is a weak finisher.

Kurt Angle:

Strengths- Amazing wrestler. Can do just about anything in the ring. Throws a great punch and makes everything else look perfect. Terrific mic skills. Funny

Weakness- Olympic Slam is a lame finisher. It's only saving grace is that it can come out of nowhere. He was a pretty lame face...........I wanted to kill him

The Rock:

Strengths- Cuts great promos and can make a match exciting

Weakness- Terrible moveset, doesn't sell submission moves in the least, works a little too fast.

Austin:

Strenghts- good on the mic. Versatile wrestler. Can go from brawler to mat wrestler if needed (see feud with Angle). Stunner is still one of the most exciting finishers around

Weakness- Brawls way too much. Almost all of his matches are of the "No DQ" variety. Injuries have limited him

Foley:

Strengths - Master of the insane bump. Nice guy. One of the few faces I went out of my way to cheer for. His books were pretty swell too

Weakness- Not exactly the worlds best wrester. His cheap pops and plugs for his many books became tiresome.

RVD:

Strengths- Amazing spot wrestler

Weakness- The stuff in between his spots is pretty mediocre. Doesn't grasp the concept of ring psychology. (Though his match with Storm a few weeks back showed he can)

HHH:

Strengths- Killer finisher. Good promo man. Truly loves the whole profession. One of the best heels around

Weakness- Hasn't been the same since the injury. Not a very likeable face

Hogan:

Strengths - Nostalgia

Weakness- Too many to list. They'll rear their ugly head when the nostalgia dies off

Okay, I'm gonna leave out anything that doesn't happen in the ring, so stuff like "wasn't booked properly" doesn't count.

Steve Austin

S: incredibly versatile, can do almost any style.  Great charisma & storytelling ability.  Plays to the crowd as well as anyone ever has.  Has the best finisher in the business.

W: sometimes resorts to cookie-cutter brawls on the floor with less-skilled opponents, not the greatest carrier.  Knees, elbows, back, & neck have been held together with rubber bands & glue for the past five years.

Bret Hart

S: highly athletic, great stamina.  Believable moves that looked like they really hurt.  Good mat wrestler, great selling.  Excellent at carrying weak opponents.

W: sometimes came off as ruthless, or too damn mean.  Repetitive at times, i.e. lots of punches and 5 MOVES OF DOOM.

Shawn Michaels

S: bumping machine, the best in the business at the time.  Great overall athleticism.  Underrated technician and mat worker.  Good carrying ability.

W: sometimes would work so hard that his opponent would just sit there and let HBK bounce off of him.  Hard to believe sometimes that he could beat the larger men.

Hulk Hogan

S: Great at telling a story in the ring.  Has always been athletic, with better-than-average stamina for his age.

W: his punches suck, and he throws way too many of them.  Looks horrible when he doesn't care & phones it in.  Can't carry anyone worse than him.

Ric Flair

S: Is a cardiovascular god.  Great bumping & selling.  Best leg-worker on the planet.

W: sometimes repetitive, limited moveset.  Was too willing to sell for weak opponents, looked like a wimp.

Chris Benoit

S: crisp execution of moves, great stamina, great selling, good matwork, good overall.

W: too damn many chops.  Doesn't seem to know how to "pop" the crowd like some others, lacks personality.

Chris Jericho

S: has that fire, always gives his all.  Very versatile, can work any style.

W: general sloppyness, probably aided by three-inch lifts on the boots.  Doesn't seem credible against larger men.  Weak finishers.

Kurt Angle

S: keeps improving at an alarming rate, is already as good as or better than anyone else in the WWF.  Great athleticism, brawling, mat ability.

W: stiff.  Came into pro wrestling with lots of preexisting injuries.  Limited moveset at times, and half his signature moves are ripped off other former WWF main eventers.

The Rock

S: An awesome overall athlete, has conditioning, speed, and strength.  Fires off those punches with astonishing quickness.  Plays the crowd like a piano, especially as a heel.  Healthy, has had few significant injuries.

W: can't work a submission hold to save his life.  Limited moveset, People's Elbow is the goofiest finisher of all time.

Triple H

S: used to be one of the best psychologists & carriers in the business, circa 2000.  Good stamina, excellent know-how in applying his moves.

W: limited technical ability.  Has never seemed very strong, despite muscular build.  Has slowed WAY down since his injury, has had many knee & leg problems.

Owen Hart

S: possibly the best technical wrestler the WWF has ever seen (except maybe Malenko), much better than Bret on the mat.  Good bumper & seller.  Seemingly limitless moveset, excellent conditioning.

W: held back by knee injuries.  Sometimes looked unmotivated or apathetic in the ring.

Mick Foley

S: insane bumper.  Much better stamina than you'd think for his size.  Great carrying ability.

W: laundry-list of every possible injury.  Was too willing to take dangerous bumps for all opponents.  Offense sometimes looked weak.

The Undertaker

S: incredible speed & agility for such a huge man, very graceful.  Excellent storytelling abilities in the ring, great charisma, oft-overlooked cardio & stamina.

W: inconsistent moveset; some weeks it's just punches, other weeks he's Frank Gotch.  Injuries and age have caught up to him in a big way.

Randy Savage

S: crazy, willing to do anything.  Great punches, good general athleticism.  Stayed relatively injury-free for most of his career.

W: didn't seem to trust his opponents sometimes, hard to work with.  Couldn't carry less-skilled workers very well.  Moveset became limited as years went on.

Scott Hall

S: interesting moveset.  Took good bumps when he had to.  Very charismatic, played to the crowd well.

W: sometimes wrestled while under the influence.  Has slowed down over the years.  Often seems to struggle with doing his own finisher.

Kevin Nash

S: he's 6'10" tall.

W: very limited moveset.  Very slow in the ring.  No stamina or cardio to speak of.  Not very strong for his size.  Incompetent bumper at times.  Rarely puts forth any effort.  Age and injuries have made him worse every year.  Has injured many opponents in the ring.  Worthless.

X-Pac

S: good bumper & seller.  Pretty good carrying ability.  Used to be a great high-flyer.

W: constantly injured, in head, neck, & knees.  Weak-looking offense.

Shawn Michaels: St.-Was one of the best WWF risk-takers of the 90's.  Had classic matches and could carry the worst wrestlers(like Kevin Nash) to good matches.

Wk.-A backstage politician who along with his Kliq buddies tried holding back other wrestlers in 1996, an asshole backstage, unwilling to lose the WWF title once he got it.

Hulk Hogan: St.-Made a huge name for himself not only in the WWF, but in the wrestling world.  Good charisma(but Nostalgia will soon wear off, I guarentee it)

Wk.-Once the Nostalgia wears off, you'll know exactly what his weaknesses are....

Bret Hart: St.-One of the best technical wrestlers of all time.  Had good micwork.

Wk.-Still bitter about things in the past now and can't get over them.  A concussion thanks to Goldberg in 1999 ended his career on a bad note.

Ric Flair: St.-One of the greatest psychologists in the wrestling business.  In the past, has cut classic promos and has a lot of charisma.

Wk.-Micwork has deteriorated some with the lisps, showing his age, his matches now can't compare to the ones he had years ago.

Chris Benoit: St.-Great technical wrestler and good seller.

Wk.-Poor mic work, no charisma.

Chris Jericho: St.-Agile in the ring, good mat technician

Wk.-One of the most well-known victims of backstage politics from Hogan and Nash in WCW, and HHH in the WWF.  Was booked as a transition champion when he had the Undisputed title by having interference help him beat stars like Austin and The Rock.  Had an embarassing time when Stephanie McMahon aligned with him and during the Jericho/HHH feud, and was overshadowed by her and HHH.

Kurt Angle: St.-One of the best all-around wrestlers in the WWF.  He can move fast in the ring(as shown with his running belly-to-belly suplex from the top rope after his opponent is going for a high-risk move).  Good mic worker and really hilarious.

Wk.-Had a terrible run as a face, has been made to look weak in his feuds with HHH in the past.

The Rock: St.-Loads of charisma, good on the mic, really popular wrestler

Wk.-Terrible moveset, stale catchphrases, can't apply the Sharpshooter properly

Triple H: St.-In the past, was a good psychologist in the ring and could carry anyone to a good match.

Wk.-One of the wrestlers who has held Jericho back with backstage politics.  Bad micwork, too slow in the ring, and hasn't been the same since coming back in terms of wrestling ability.

Owen Hart: St.-Was a resilient wrestler and had a humorous character.

Wk.-Never had a WWF title reign.

Mick Foley: St.-Was a good bumper, became famous as the "King of the Deathmatch" in Japan, had good matches with HHH in 2000.

Wk.-Wasn't a very good wrestler, Commissioner Foley character became an annoyance, made cheap plugs about his books on TV.

The Undertaker: St.-In the past, had one of the best characters in wrestling.  Temporarily shut the fans up from chanting "What?" on Raw.  Very popular name.

Wk.-Age, currently has a bad character, deteriorated wrestler.

Randy Savage: St.-Was a good risk-taking wrestler, had good promos.

Wk.-Demanding too much money just to be satisfied in a wrestling promotion now, was overshadowed by Hogan in the past.

Scott Hall: St.-Decent wrestler when sober

Wk.-Insults wrestlers backstage and is a Kliq member.  Also has had alcohol problems in the past.

Kevin Nash: St.-Forget this one, because I can't think of any.

Wk.-Backstage politcian who held Jericho back in the past, terrible wrestler, whines backstage when he doesn't get his way.

X-Pac: St.-Good high-flyer when he tries to be

Wk.-The only reason he's near main-event status now is because of tagging along with his Kliq buddies and not earning his spot.  In the past, he was lazy in the ring and used only kicks, chinlocks, the Bronco Buster, and the X-Factor.  Has a history of neck injuries.
