Deliverance

Recommended Posts

For whatever reason I pulled out my old tape of Deliverance last night and watched it. Possibly due to it being on the I Love the 70s show for 1972.

God that is still a disturbing movie. We all know about the notorious Ned Beatty "Squeal like a pig boy!" scene with the rednecks, but there are other things in the movie that still make me wonder on repeat viewings:

--Was Drew really shot, or was Lewis imagining it?

--Was that the other redneck or was that just some guy hunting?

--Was the deputy's brother in law one of the two main rednecks?

Anybody wanna chime in on this stuff?

you should probably add spoiler tags to that.

yup...very intense & disturbing movie, & my favorite action movie ever.

Spoiler (Highlight to Read):

the dream jon voigt has at the end, with the redneck's hand coming up from out of the lake scared the shit out of me. the first time i saw it was at like 2 a.m. when i was twelve, and i could not sleep because i kept seeing that image. and the final shot of the movie going back to the lake was genius, i kept waiting for the hand to come back out. it did a great overall job of maintaining the tension throughout the movie, even when their lives weren't directly in danger (the missing redneck, having to change their story, etc). the only major flaw i can think of is after burt reynolds kills the first redneck and they have this big overblown discussion about the law & such, and it feels out of place. other than that, i think it's practically perfect in every way.

--Was Drew really shot, or was Lewis imagining it?

IIRC, it's left unclear. i personally think he was shot, but it's been years since i've seen it.

--Was that the other redneck or was that just some guy hunting?

who do you mean by "that"? you mean the guy jon voigt put an arrow through? if so, yes: it was the other redneck. for a second voigt thinks he shot the wrong guy, but recognizes him when he pulls the false teeth out of the guy's mouth.

--Was the deputy's brother in law one of the two main rednecks?

again, it's been years since i've seen it, but i think the answer is yes.
