Guest Brian Report post Posted April 4, 2002 Debated this for a while. Two and three were hard not to want as number one. No Mercy had a much cleaner finish than either one, and it was acceptable to me. WrestleMania was acceptable on a different level (match storyline) but was still very screwy. Vengeance would have been Match of the year if every match on my list had a clean finish. 1. Rock vs. Jericho - No Mercy 2. Austin vs. Rock - WrestleMania 3. Rock vs. Jericho - Vengeance 4. Guest sayeitan Report post Posted April 4, 2002 Best 4 way you've ever seen? Then see the ECW TV title 4 way. Thank me later. My "best of the rest 5 matches of 2001": 1. Angle/Benoit Ultimate Submission: I don't know what people could have possibly been expecting with this one, but it was absolutely brilliant for what it was supposed to be. Nothing beats Angle running around like a goof while in the lead. 2. Triple H v. Kurt Angle - Royal Rumble: H becomes Flair, and Angle has to withstand the onslaught. 3. Jericho/Angle/Rock for the Undisputed Title on RAW: Vastly underrated. HOT muthafucka of a match, with The Rock going down in his hometown. 4. Rob Van Dam v. Steve Austin, Smackdown: This is where RVDmania hit its pinnacle, only to be squashed a month later. An angry, emotional Austin looks to make "an example" out of RVD, the most popular Alliance member, but lets his temper get the best of him. 5. Kurt Angle v. Hardcore Holly, King of the Ring qualifier: blow-off to the mini-feud, with the broken arm/moonsault psychology and Holly going apeshit on Angle. Try and track this one down. And yeah, no big surprise - Angle shows up in 4 of the 5.

Ah well. You think HHH/Austin was sloppy and yet you include Rock/Austin on your list. That match contained 2 sloppy bladejobs, 2 sloppy sharpshooters (I mean, REALLY fucking sloppy), a sloppy stunner from The Rock and sloppy interference from Vince. In fact, it was sloppy from bell to bell. Don't really know what you mean when you say "the ladder is too reliant". In fact, it broke my brain.

Yes, Rock/Austin had some sloppy spots in there, but I didn't think they were as bad as those in Austin/HHH. First of all, I don't see how you can call a blade job "sloppy." Second, I didn't think Rock's stunner was that sloppy, nor were his sharp shooters (at least not more than usual) and never did I think they hurt his credibility in the match. Austin's work in the X7 match, in my opinion, was much better than at No Way Out, despite having to play a heel for a crowd that wasn't willing to boo him. To me, HHH/Austin had nothing but sloppy work from the very beginning, with both guys repeating spots, blowing spots, and generally looking lost for most of the match. HHH's blown stun gun was about the sloppiest thing I've seen for a while, and didn't do too much to impress me with his "technical skills" according to J.R. The brawling was pretty lame, too. I liked how they tried to implement the arm psychology, but they just sort of forgot about it after the first fall (in which it wasn't even a factor in the finish) until HHH remembered his arm was hurt so he could take a contrived table bump. And while Rock/Austin did have interference, it did make sense, as opposed to HHH and Austin finding weopons of mass destruction underneath J.R. Oh, and I'm pretty sure you know what I meant, but thanks for playing the troll in the situation and taking your cheap shots, buddy. Maybe I need to re-watch Rock/Austin, but I thought it lived up to the hype, which is more than I can say for Austin/HHH, which frustrated me more than anything. Jeff Hardy - Invasion There were so many good WWF PPV matches last year that it was hard to only list 10. I always thought the Rock/Angle match from NWO was underrated because of all the attention the Austin/Trips match got. I know it's only April but things are not looking good for next year's list. The only really good match on PPV so far this year was Rock/Jericho at the Rumble. And with Hogan, Taker, Triple H (in his current state), and the NWO on top, it's doubtful we'll see much in the way of great PPV main event matches anytime soon. Second, I didn't think Rock's stunner was that sloppy, nor were his sharp shooters (at least not more than usual) and never did I think they hurt his credibility in the match. A bladejob can be sloppy when you a) see the blade or b) the cutting is blatant enough as to be one or both of: obvious or caught on camera. A and B apply to the match. Rocky's sharpshooters were ok, but he was far too low at what was supposed to be a pivotal point in the match - essentially a nod to Austin/Hart. Austin's sharpshooters were both incredibly lame, and it was as if the second one was there solely to kill some time. As for Rock's credibility - I had a tough time really rooting for the megaface in peril when he's overselling everything in sight, including a ring bell-shot that left almost a foot between bell and forehead. But as much as I rant about the match, it was effective and had a pretty spectacular conclusion. As for "trolling", I don't really know what you mean. I've been involved in "the scene" for years now, and message boards haven't really been my thing. I didn't mean to be confrontational. I just honestly had no idea what you meant. Yes, I understand "latter" becoming "ladder" but I wasn't quite sure if you forgot to add "reliant on (insert)" or if you meant reliant on the next words. Apologies. I guess I see your point about the blade jobs, but I honestly never caught anything like that in Rock/Austin, but then again, I usually never catch that sort of thing, probably because I'm not looking hard enough. I do, however, remember several people complaining about HHH being blatantly caught on camera blading in the No Way Out match, though I never saw that one either. The sharpshooter's in the match were deffinately nods to Austin/Hart (so was the Million-Dollar-Dream rope-walk reversal spot) and for that they did seem sloppy, but I thought they still proved affective. Yeah, Rock did oversell, but I thought with a match of that type it was almost justified, as big matches of that kind were usually played up as "larger than life" and all that. I'm not saying I prefer it that way, but I think Rock selling that was specifically to put Austin over as a God, which is what the crowd seemed to think of him as. As for trolling, I guess it just sort of bothers me when people make a big deal about spelling on the internet. I mean, I can totally understand the frustration if it's unclear what he/she is saying, but nitpicking really annoys the crap out of me, which why I reacted that way, so no hard feelings.
