Best ppv of 2001

Recommended Posts

I have seen so many posts about Wrestlemania being the best ppv of 2001...

My question is WHY?

My vote is for No Way Out...

What do YOU think was the best?

Wrestlemania X7 was the best because it had the most quality matches worked in the most alternate of styles, with everyone delivering in some way. Angle/Benoit was the classic "technical" showcase, TLC II was the crazy spot-fest that raised the bar even higher, and Rock/Austin was the big money match that lived up to the hype (no matter how much you disagree on it's booking). Vince/Shane delivered the drama, too, and everything else was enjoyable if not very good.

No Way Out was a solid PPV, but I wouldn't call it the best of 2001. After recently seeing HHH/Austin again it wasn't nearly as good as I remember it being and deffinately doesn't hold up as a solid MOTYC either. It was enjoyable, but not really a stand out match. The Steph/Trish showdown was better than expected, but considering the participants, that puts it at just about decent. The IC Title four-way was fun, but nothing earth-shattering, and the main event really suffered from overbooking. I liked the PPV, but it wasn't nearly as good as WM or even the Royal Rumble, which both were enjoyable through out and had more stand-out matches going for them.

Gotta disagree Ricky. Watched the HHH-Austin match the other day. Still love it. The 4way still rocks. The title match (with the exception of the Big Show run-in) still rocks. The tag and womans matches were watchable. So I still think it's the best ppv of 2001. As for Mania17, only Angle-Benoit and Rock-Austin stuck out for me. Great PPV but I like No Way Out way more.

Wrestlemania X-7, it's not really a contest.

Not only was this the best PPV of the year, but it was four hours long, and I was entertained for the whole four hours. I think that it was the best Wrestlemania ever, so of course it would have to be the best PPV of last year.

I even liked the gimmick battle royal. I marked big time for Micheal P.S. Hayes and his music/walk/robe.

No Way Out 2001 is basically a show with solid matches and then a blowaway match in Austin vs HHH.  Wrestlemania X-Seven on the other hand was one of those shows that kept raising your enjoyment as the night went on.  From the bottom with the nutty hardcore battle royal right up until the awesome Rock vs Austin (stupid ending aside), it was one really good match after another.  X-Seven still holds my top spot for best PPV ever.

First of all, the booking was retarded in that HHH/Austin, by far, the most hyped match on the show, was booked in the midcard. Second of all, that match, as a match, was really sloppily worked and not the **** classic it's made out to be. It was really quite pedestrian, especially with the on-again off-again arm psychology, sloppy brawling and contrived bumps. The first fall alone was so awkward and loosely-worked, and it was obvious they were just going through the motions until they started juicing and bumping all over the place. I also would like an explanation for JR having both a sledge hammer and a barb-wire-wrapped 2x4 under his announcing booth without knowing it. I mean, call me nitpicky, but that's just stupid. I'm sorry, but when the result of four months of build-up is a borring "technical contest" slapped together with lots of sloppy brawling and the occasional prop-shot, I tend to get annoyed.

As for the four-way, it was a fun sprint, but matches of that nature rarely have any structure or continuity, which really hurt this particular encounter because Guererro and Benoit were trying to work in the "desention" storyline. They really should have broken them up before this point so they could have focused on the match instead of the storyline. Yeah, the Rock/Angle match was stellar, but the Big Show run-in really made no sense to me (especially cause he was demoted to the hardcore division shortly afterwards) and pretty much everyone knew Rocky was going over before the match started.

Personally, I think Angle/Benoit and Rock/Austin were better than anything on No Way Out, and the entire four hour show was filled with good-amazing stuff on there.

BTW, I think Summerslam is really being shafted here for not being mentioned by anyone. It wasn't the best, but it deserves to be mentioned.

Compare the top 3 matches from each card, and this is how I see it:

Austin/HHH > Austin/Rock

Rock/Angle < Angle/Benoit

4 Way < TLC2

Add on that Wrestlemania had emotion streaming out in layers, all watchable matches, basically any style you want out of American wrestling (as someone before mentioned), and it was literally a 4 hour masterpiece. I'll never be more entertained by a wrestling event.

Best...PPV...ever.

How could you POSSIBLY EVEN THINK THAT?

Mannkind writes that Angle/Benoit at Mania was better than Angle/Rock at NWO.

Yes, he seriously wrote that...

What a ridiculous thing to post...

Does everyone agree with me?

I love NWO, but WMX7 is my pick for best PPV ever.  It's just amazing from beginning to end, with seven solid matches by my count (Jericho/Regal, Angle/Benoit, Test/Guerrero, Vince/Shane, TLC2, Trip/Taker and Austin/Rock), an incredible number for a WWF PPV.  Austin/Rock was a MOTYC, TLC2 and Angle/Benoit were both classics, the crowd was hot the whole way, it was just awesome.  It even excelled in all the little things.  Great video packages, a theme song that worked really well (even if I don't like the song itself), an awesome set, solid commentary.  Everything came together.  It'll be hard for the WWF to ever top it.

And to big ern, I have to disagree.  Angle/Benoit was considerably better than Rock/Angle imo.  For one thing, it wasn't interrupted in the middle by a horrible Big Show run-in.  It also had the great amateur wrestling sequence at the beginning, and was also just a better pure wrestling match, even if it didn't have as much heat or emotion behind it.  The cheap ending is the only thing preventing it from being a MOTYC.

I gotta agree with Ricky cho.

Austin vs. HHH was not as *great* as everyone says.  I liked it, but wouldnt dare put it as a MOTYC.  Fake barbedwire, horrible selling by someone who used to be able to sell a lot better, not to mention no real psychology and a horrible build up just took away from 'the match'... The only 'good' thing about the match was the finish since it was actually CLEAN.  However, what did this match even matter as 2 months later they were teaming together?

I would put SummerSlam 2001 as a contender for best ppv of 2001.  Tajiri vs Xpac, Storm vs Edge, Austin vs Angle.  All really good - awesome matches.

i think the main competition for the show of the year was between the first 3 shows, so i'll just break those down:

WM 17

jericho/regal--disappointing, **1/2 at most

raven/kane/big show--mediocre, ** at most

eddy/test--see above

angle/benoit--okay, this one really disappointed me.  maybe because i was expecting a big psychological match, & the only "psychology" i got was each guy trying to do the other's finisher.  i don't think these 2 had a really good match together till judgment day.  **

ivory/chyna--dud

vince/shane--went WAY over my expectations, ***1/2

tlc 3--i do not like spotfests.  they're nice to look at, but they don't emotionally involve me.  this match was the same; i was never in any suspense of anybody winning, i was just waiting for the next spots.  but ***1/2 for the effort.

trips/undertaker--i really liked this one, trips pulled a miracle.  ***1/2

austin/rock--overrated, as this basically consisted of brawling & ripping off spots from bret hart matches.  but it was still dramatic & put together really well.  ****1/4

royal rumble:

dudleys/edge & christian--nice, fast-paced opener, very forgettable.  ***1/4

benoit/jericho--OH HELL YEAH.  watching it again, it was spottier than i remember, but still ****3/4

chyna/ivory--i won't rate that shit

trips/angle--very nice drama & psychology, especially for a heel/heel match.  ****

rumble--can't say enough good things about it.  the marathon man (kane) held it together nicely, & the last 10 minutes or so was amazing.  ****1/4

no way out:

raven/big show--dud

jericho/benoit/eddy/x-pac--action literally didn't stop till the bell rang, ****1/2

steph/trish--not too bad, **1/2

austin/trips--i think this is pretty overrated.  booking was boring (come on, it's a 2/3 falls match, why make a finisher figure into every single fall?), the cage was pretty unnecessary as it wasn't really used, & they were visibly tired for the 3rd fall, cause you can see the action sloooooooow doooooooown.  ***1/2

lawler/richards--* i guess

taker & kane/edge & christian/dudleys--didn't particularly impress me, *3/4

rock/angle--loved it, loved it, loved it.  i gasped at the near-falls (which i didn't do for the austin/trips match).  ****1/2

by my tastes, the rumble is the only one with more than one ****+ match.  wrestlemania was bogged down by mediocrity.  no way out was good, but the rumble was just better.  so, rumble gets my vote for best ppv of 2001 (and one of the best ever).

I still think HHH/austin was *mildly* better than Austin/Rock. If Austin/Angle at SS had a finish it would probably be my favourite match of all time. No way out's IC strap 4 way is VERY underrated IMO. And kane worked his ass off in the rumble. 3 fantastic matches and nothing too offensive everywhere else puts NWO on top for me.

WrestleMania X7 is by far the best of 2001, and one of the best ever, with SummerSlam coming in second.

I just watched HHH/UT and Rock/Austin again, and I have to say I love them both even more now. Both were hyped amazingly well, and the endings paid off. I love the ending of Rock vs Austin, as it went from an evenly matched brutal confrontation to a desperate man doing anything to win against the consummate hero sooooo quickly. The crowd was insanely hot the whole time, and that made every match that much better. From top to bottom, it was a show that was perfectly put together and well-made.

SummerSlam had awesome matches and good hype, but the Booker T/Rock main event really bored me and most everyone else.

No Way Out and Royal Rumble are both pretty good, with two great matches on both cards, but the crowd and hype for both events were sort of...blah.

Well I'll just give my thoughts on this then...

I think that Wrestlemania X-Seven was the best PPV of 2001. In fact it was the best Wrestlemania ever (with Wrestlemania VIII coming second) and one of the best PPV of all time. I don't think it was because of the matches as much as it was about hype and the feeling inside the Astrodome that day. I mean, most of the matches were good. I enjoyed the triple threat hardcore match, Angle vs. Benoit TLC III, the gimmick battle royale and Austin vs. Rock. And even though Guerrero vs. Test was enojoyable it was hardly Wrestlemania standard. It was just card filling fluff. Other bouts like Jericho vs. Regal, RTC vs. Tazz & APA & Ivory vs. Chyna were bloody awful. So Wrestlemania did have some damn good matches it also had some stinkers. However, for pure wrestling you can't go wrong with Royal Rumble, No Way Out and Summerslam from that year. They were all great PPV's but none of them were special like Wrestlemania which has a great vibe from it. It's the same with Wrestlemania this year. There were some enjoyable matches (Christian vs. DDP, Undertaker vs. Flair & Hogan vs. Rock) but most of the card was below standard, but it managed to get positive reviews from sites because of the feeling of the show.

wrestlemania was good but hey its wrestlemania its supposed to be excellent. i thought summerslam was total crap right until the main event. my two favorites were no way out and no mercy mainly because jericho had good matches in both of these ppv's which is more than can be said for wm and ss

3-way tie for best ppv of 2001.

WWF No Way Out 2001

WWF Wrestlemania 17

NJPW G1 Glimax Tag League Finals

Also, Summerslam 2001 was quite good as well.

No Way Out had the best match (Austin/HHH) but has no real significance.

NJPW had almost all good match, the only bad one combined to last about 12 minutes.

Mania had the most signifigance though

Can't go wrong with any of the three

what can i say, i enjoyed it.  i only saw it once, but i remember really being enthralled at the end & i don't remember being bored at any point.  my opinion may change if i watch it again.  i think rumbles are the hardest matches to fuck up, because as long as you:

a) have lots of teased eliminations

b) don't clutter up the ring

c) don't let the action slow down (i.e., keep some fresh guys in there to make up for the tired ones)

d) have someone to bring the match together as a whole (i.e. one guy who stays in a long time)

then you really can't go wrong.

I'm surprised that Vengenace hasn't been brought up...

3 Awesome WWF title matches - All 4 stars

Taker/RVD - Was good as hardcore title matches go...

The Hardys was better than i expected, but apparently a disappointment by alot...

It really is a sleeper PPV

Angle/Benoit was better.

Are you KIDDING ME? The finish to Angle/Benoit was CRAP and could of been a VERY hot match with a terrific ending. The No Way Out (PPV of 2001 mind you, i agree with you there Big Ern) match where Angle faced Rocky in a WWF title defence was a CLASSIC, although it had one low, the Big Sloth run-in, the ending was exciting and kept you on the edge of your seat till the final bell. Angle/Rock is better, hands down.
