What do you think of these rules?

Recommended Posts

I was thinking about posting these the other day, but lately I just haven't been in the mood to post.

Then, in light of the "Is TSM Still Fun" thread, I figured I might as well put these up and see your reactions to them.

These are the forum rules of a GREAT message board, www.fridaythe13thforum.com.

It's a message board dedicated towards the Friday the 13th series, horror movies in general and a bunch of other random topics similar to TSM. The cool thing about this board, in my opinion, is that everyone stays ON TOPIC and there is some GREAT discussion in almost every forum.

The first rule is the one that I can see having the most debate about, but it seems to work for them.

Only start one new thread per forum, per day.

This is to encourage continued discussion in the threads already present. With this message board, threads with new posts are bumped to the top of the page.

It is important to distinguish between a thread and a post. A new thread is starting an entirely new topic in a forum. A post is just a reply to an already existing thread. Users may post replies to as many threads as they want. There is no limit on posts, so reply away!

The reason this rule was created was so everyone would get a fair shot at having their contributions read and discussed. If each person posts two or three new threads, they're not giving OTHER people's threads fair attention. The more threads posted, the faster other messages are moved out of the way and pushed to Page 2 and beyond. Why would you want to post 10 new topics, asking all of your burning questions and then, in a few days get bored because you can't think of anything else to say?

This board is about conversation and community, not "oh I should be able to post as many messages as I want". If you are interested in rapid-fire posting, maybe you should check out the chatroom where you can easily talk with users for as long as you want.

If you respect the people who will be replying to your message, you'll respect the one new thread a day rule.

Do not post using ANY sort of derogatory / prejudicial language.

Any use of language that is prejudicial towards another race, gender, religion, disability or sexuality will not be tolerated on this message board. This rule is strictly enforced, and the excuse "I was only kidding" is lame and unacceptable.

This is an open-minded forum where anyone can come to discuss horror movies and other topics. In no way would we want for someone to read an offensive message and feel that they could not post here because they would be discriminated against.

In response to the question, "What about freedom of speech?" - you have the freedom to express your own opinions, not the freedom to degrade and disrespect anyone else here. If a rule protecting people from being oppressed and discriminated against is bothersome to you, then you should not join this message board.

**Clarification**

Words NOT Allowed:

1. Use of racial, ethnic, or religious slurs such as "n*gger," "jap," "kyke," "paki," etc. in a derogatory manner to single out, alienate, and/or belittle persons of specific racial and/or cultural groups (even if you happen to belong to that group).

2. Use of sexual slurs such as "dyke," "f*ggot," "queer," "homo," etc. in a derogatory manner to single out, alienate, and/or belittle persons of specific sexual orientations (even if your sexual orientation happens to be the same as the group you are belittling).

3. Using the term "gay" to denote stupidity or the state of being unsatisfactory. Example: "That movie was totally gay."

Allowed:

Use of some of these terms in a non-derogatory sense to discuss their nature or meaning, used in a non-derogatory sense to describe your own group, or in a matter-of-fact way to recount the details of something that transpired in which you were not the party using the offensive terms.

Do not post flaming insults directed at individuals.

The administrators cannot force you to like everyone on this board. In fact, the differing opinions and views on this message board is one of the things that makes it so interesting. Users are allowed to disagree, argue, and even be as sarcastic as they want with each other.

That being said, it is asked that you are respectful of people's opinions and do not insult them as a person in your posts. There is a clear difference between disagreeing with someone by saying "that was a pointless post," versus insulting a person's mother, wife, country, etc. This is not the place to have an insult war, and it will not be allowed.

Do not post porn pictures or links to porn sites.

Although the Friday the 13th series does have it's fair share of tits and ass, this message board does not appreciate users posting links to porn sites or putting up pornographic pictures. If there's any question about standards of nudity in a picture, e-mail a moderator.

Do not post advertisements for your website.

Any posts that are made saying "Come to this webpage" or any other type of advertisements are not allowed on this message board. These type of posts are unneccesary and take up room in the forums. In your user profile you can have your webpage link, and you can even include a link in your sig file. Also, posts only saying "I updated my page, please visit!" are also considered advertisements. You can change your sig file at anytime to include information about site updates.

Do not use the memberlist e-mails to send spam to users.

Some people have come to this message board to use the list of e-mails on the memberlist. Spamming, or sending mass e-mails to a group of users, is not allowed. If you recieve an unsolicited e-mail that appears to have originated from this message board, please contact a moderator and that user will be warned/banned.

Do not make fun of the recently deceased!

This is a rule fairly specific to our message board that has come about due to a few recent events. If someone makes a post about a celebrity or another person dying, don't be so moronic as to reply making a joke. It may seem odd to have this rule in a message board based on a slasher movie series, but it is very important to distingush between movies and reality. Thus, you will recieve a warning if you make fun of someone else dying or being seriously injured. Don't be disrespectful.

Do not post about illegal bootlegs of films.

There were many problems with Jason X bootlegs before it's release, and it didn't do anything to help the box office. It is the opinion of this forum that if we want the production companies to make more movies, we need to support legitimate sales of tickets and videos, and not buy 4th generation crap off of some guy with two VCRs. Some people felt it was hypocritical to just defend Jason X and not other movies, and so the forum decided to eliminate all talk about bootlegs. Do not discuss bootlegs, or you will recieve a warning.

Search the forum before starting a new thread to see if there is already discussion on your topic.

If you are new to this message board, please search through the existing messages and post replies to the threads that interest you. With this message board, as soon as a thread gets a new post it is pushed to the first page again. In this way we can keep posts on the same topic in the same thread and prevent there being 10 new threads saying "What is your favorite Friday the 13th movie?" for example.

Please do not post movie spoilers anywhere but in the spoiler forum.

There are many users who do not want to know anything about a movie before they see it, and any member who disrespects that by posting movie spoilers in any other forum is not appreciated.

Bottom line, if you are worried about letting something slip about an unreleased movie in a message, be safe and keep it in the spoiler forum.

There is also a Spoiler feature when you post that will block out the important information to the normal view, but if you drag your mouse over and highlight the area, you will be able to see the words. Please try and use this if you are in a regular thread that is not entirely about spoilers.

Note: As a courtesy to our members, if you are making a post in the main horror forum about an already released movie where you discuss major plot points or surprises, please put in your topic thread "*SPOILERS*" so that they can be aware if they have not yet seen the movie.

If your thread is deleted, do not post a new message asking why.

There are many reasons why a post would be deleted. Sometimes there is already a previous thread on the same topic, or sometimes the information is incorrect or not relevant to this message board. Sometimes posts that are related to already existing topics will be merged into the appropriate thread. Make sure to check your recent posts to see if it is somewhere else.

For whatever reason your message is removed, do not post another message asking why. Please send an e-mail to [email protected] if you have a question about the reasons for the removal instead of posting a new message on the board.

Aw, no. I think that idea is dumb.

I personally think that this would be fine as a guideline to use. Only problem is that with the first rule on there I get the feeling a lot of people here would take threads off topic(If I'm reading this right...it is way past bedtime for me).

the rest are really common sense type things, and surely could be implemented with little issue.

This would definitely benefit the WWE folder I think, if only to clear out the clutter a bit.

You see, I actually like the first rule (although I will not implement it, don't worry) because it curbs possible trolls somewhat...AND prevents some folders (like the WWE folder) from having 3 or 4 threads dedicated to the same topic.

Their forums have some of the best discussions I've ever seen anywhere because it's all in one spot and the threads are constantly being bumped.

That's the problem, Bps. The WWE is the most populated folder by far and the mods aren't always around to work on them, so we end up with 4 or 5 different threads all talking about the same thing ( and most aren't labeled properly)...but by the time a mod comes in and merges the whole thing, they've all gone off-topic and it makes no real sense to merge them.

For the record, I still don't think we need new mods.

Also, I know this may sound silly, but I prefer when there are just one or two threads on a certain topic.

We turned last years Buffy Season 7 thread into the unofficial Buffy thread, which is still going strong.

I just posted Season 5's DVD cover art, btw. If it hadn't been practically acknowledged by all Buffy fans on the board that THAT would be the thread that we use to talk about Buffy, that would have taken its own thread. Just an example.

"Only start one new thread per forum, per day."

I'm assuming this is per member -- I can live with that rule.

"Do not post using ANY sort of derogatory/prejudicial language."

I don't like this one.

"Do not post flaming insults directed at individuals."

Isn't that what NHB is for?

"Do not make fun of the recently deceased!"

Once again, I don't like this rule.

"Search the forum before starting a new thread to see if there is already discussion on your topic. "

I think most of us do this.

The spoiler rule we already do here, and anything not mentioned I could care less about...

No sir, I don't like it. No flaming? No calling Kotzenjunge gay anymore? If you were to implement those rules, I'd probably quit posting here or get banned.

Only start one new thread per forum, per day.

This is to encourage continued discussion in the threads already present.

Wouldn't work in CE. Sometimes more than one big thing occurs in the same day which is completely unrelated to anything else, and there's no sense in delaying discussion for a day or more on major issues - the forum is called Current Events, after all. Multiple threads on the same topic get merged by the mods anyway (Jobber and I posted threads about the same 9th Circuit decision at exactly the same time, and they were merged), and very few threads are ignored by anyone. Those that are ignored usually consist of the sort of inane, trivial news items that Rant or Boo Bradley get from their current issues of the Weekly World News or something.

This rule might have some application in GC or NHB, but people would need to change their posting habits drastically (not that that would be a bad thing, necessarily). I don't really care what you do to those forums, though, so I have no further comment on that.

If each person posts two or three new threads, they're not giving OTHER people's threads fair attention.

Absurd reasoning. No thread is entitled to "fair attention." Say someone posts something completely stupid, like the aforementioned tidbits a few people put up from time to time: "Yoko Ono To Be Naked" or "Church used for Porno." Sure, it's funny for a minute, but the federal appellate court's decision was handed down the same day. Should we have had to wait a day to comment on that because Yoko Ono decided to have her clothes cut off her again? CE would have to be exempt.

If you respect the people who will be replying to your message, you'll respect the one new thread a day rule.

If the admins on this or any other board ever try to make me respect anyone, I'll leave the same day. Respect is earned, not mutually enforced by fiat.

Do not post using ANY sort of derogatory / prejudicial language... This rule is strictly enforced, and the excuse "I was only kidding" is lame and unacceptable.

No, this rule is lame and unacceptable. Intent matters more than words.

Words NOT Allowed:

1. Use of racial, ethnic, or religious slurs such as "n*gger," "jap," "kyke," "paki," etc.

I have one thing to say: these people are incredibly full of themselves. Fucking patronising holier-than-thou dipshits. What's the implication here? Black people are so immature and weak-minded that they're going to have a hysterical crying fit because they see someone typed NIGGER on a computer screen? I'm disgusted. Same goes for FAGGOT. There's no fucking asterisk in these words. Leave that * bullshit on the Friday the 13th forums.

MOMMY MOMMY JSN4EVER475 CALLED ME A BAD WORD AND IT DIDN'T EVEN HAVE ONE OF THE LETTERS REPLACED BY AN UNASSUMING LITTLE SYMBOL OH GOD PLEASE MAKE THE PAIN STOP MOMMY

Jesus Christ.

That being said, it is asked that you are respectful of people's opinions and do not insult them as a person in your posts.

The necessary and sufficient response to this is "Go to hell."

Do not post porn pictures or links to porn sites.

Whatever.

Do not post advertisements for your website.

Whatever.

Do not use the memberlist e-mails to send spam to users.

No problem with this one.

Do not make fun of the recently deceased!

Two words: "Strom" and "Thurmond."

Take this rule and shove it with the first five.

Do not post about illegal bootlegs of films.

Like duh. "Avoid crime" is a fairly basic guideline on most message boards.

Search the forum before starting a new thread to see if there is already discussion on your topic.

Common sense.

Please do not post movie spoilers anywhere but in the spoiler forum.

Ditto.

If your thread is deleted, do not post a new message asking why... Please send an e-mail to [email protected] if you have a question about the reasons for the removal instead of posting a new message on the board.

Ditto.

So, 7 rules are trivial, already extant, or simply common sense, and 6 rules are just asinine. What was the point of this again?

I'm not a fan of the thread restriction at all. Let's not kid ourselves, many are here to kill time before discuss things at length. Admittedly, that includes me. If there's a number of threads with exactly the same topic, delete em.

The reason only starting one new thread per day works for them is because they're talking about old movies. Sure a new one comes out every few years, but for the most part, they're talking about old stuff. That may work fine in a folder like our Old School, but anywhere else, its garbage. Anywhere from 5-10 news items pop up per day in the WWE folder alone that don't relate to each other and the same goes for CE, Sports and others I'm sure.

Not really a big fan of this rule.

Off-topic, but this reminds me of someone explaining the difference between a rag and a towel to me while I worked at McDonald's.

"A rag is what a girl uses to wipe her pussy."

"A towel is something you use to wipe down the counters."

Now obviously I'm against RAYCISM~!, but does this rule mean I can't say "ghey" anymore?

Do not post flaming insults directed at individuals.

The administrators cannot force you to like everyone on this board. In fact, the differing opinions and views on this message board is one of the things that makes it so interesting. Users are allowed to disagree, argue, and even be as sarcastic as they want with each other.

We basically already have this rule outside of NHB and CE (I haven't seen it personally in CE, but I've read about it in other folders). But also, without naming names, there are a few posters here who seem to disagree just for the sake of disagreeing with everyone, and not giving any actual reasoning as to *why* they feel this way. And, if no one replys to their post, they'll just reiterate the point until they *do* piss someone off. I think that could be considered flame-baiting. Obviously, I can't say "you don't really feel that way" because they might really feel that way, but I think if they really do, they could at least give *some* reason, or else they just come off as antagonists most of the time.

Do not post porn pictures or links to porn sites.

Although the Friday the 13th series does have it's fair share of tits and ass, this message board does not appreciate users posting links to porn sites or putting up pornographic pictures. If there's any question about standards of nudity in a picture, e-mail a moderator.

I think links are okay. It's not like you HAVE to click on them.

I agree with this, but I think there should be a folder simply for us to advertise our webpages, as well.

Do not make fun of the recently deceased!

This is a rule fairly specific to our message board that has come about due to a few recent events. If someone makes a post about a celebrity or another person dying, don't be so moronic as to reply making a joke. Do not discuss bootlegs, or you will recieve a warning.

I wonder how many of these people use Kazaa...

If it's something recent that is big news, then I agree. But if it was something that was discussed like, several months ago, there should be a little leeway to this rule.

I think it could be allowed, as long as we post them in the same manner SD spoilers are posted.

I agree with this. It's just blatant attention whoring, IMO. I do think sending a PM to a mod would be acceptable.

All in all, I think it's a pretty reasonable list.

I think that's the biggest problem that needs addressing here: One thread for one topic.

Especially in WWE, it seems that almost every thread gets hijacked. I don't want to point fingers, but I've noticed at least three threads today that were hijacked by the same person, about the same topic; hating Shane McMahon.

It's infuriating for obvious reasons, and definitely detracts from the board.

Another message board I visit has one rule, which is "Don't be a jerk". Seems to work pretty well.

I wouldn't have to change most of what I say and do on this board if the new rules were implemented, so I have no issues with any/all of those being changed.

But I do have one question ... why is there an asterisk in n*gger and f*ggot, but not in jap, kyke, paki, dyke, etc? Personally, with the urban over-use of n*gger (e.g. rap songs) that word has become MUCH more accepted in society than kyke. If you're going to asterisk one of them, asterisk them all, methinks.

I know right off the bat if that happened HartFan would be banned. CWM, Bruj0, Alf, etc. would all be banned for using ghey. While it would be nice, unless you want a core part of the members banned, I wouldn't implement this.

Like everyone else said, you can't restrict to two topics for a day. You can however cut down Damaramu's 8 topics about how what Shane McMahon does is deplorable, get rid of Choken's spoiler topic which I've never actually seen spoilers in, Trivia's newsbits which are usually already known or posted elsewhere in more comprehendible fashion, the 2 or so topics a day about how HHH is going to ruin wrestling, the topics about how JR and King are horrible commentators (although there may not be any for a while), Anglesault bitching about some inhumanity, etc.

Also Goodear brought up a VERY good question asking why Palumbo the Janitor wasn't banned. It shouldn't matter who he is in real life if it's one of the posters here.

Those rules will in no way make TSM any more "fun". I would prefer to continue posting on an intelligent board that doesn't try and legislate for every little thing.

I second that thought.

If these rules came into effect, then TSM wouldn't be as fun anymore.

Besides the two topics that I care most about, Buffy and Angel, always stay on topic.

I like TSM the way it is. Anyone who knows me outside of TSM will probably be able to tell that I censor myself a little bit when I post here, and I think everyone else has the common sense to do the same. Anyone who doesn't gets banned. Simple as that.

I take offense to that comment Marney as the only news is not political news. Some of us would like to discuss something other than the 8 or 9 threads on the presidential debate and if you don't like it.... then complain to Tom. :P

Edit: And the rules are stupid Dames. The only place it would apply would probably be in the WWE folder because you shouldn't expect people to go and find a thread posted a year ago to bump.

Can't help you on everything else, but I whacked Palumbo already.

That's all cool...except the first rule. One topic a day? Bad idea IMO.

For one, people in different timezones will end up trapesing through 10 or so pages or other people's comments before posting themselves, so they don't bring something already said up again.

Two...SJL and SWF. Guys like Thoth can't obide by this rule, as the card and results are seperate threads.

Three...PLEASE REPLY TO MY COLUMN IN COLUMN CORNER DAMES!!!
