Guest Posted April 5, 2002 Report Posted April 5, 2002 it was a shame to see lord alfred hayes looking so frail in the photos i saw from the cauliflower alley club gathering. unfortunately i have never seen any old footage of him wrestling, but he always warms my heart as an interviewer when i watch videos from the late 80s/early 90s. particular favourites include him interviewing stu hart after bret won the i-c title at summerslam '91 and earnestly taking the microphone away from him mid sentence to tell us that stu was "absolutely speechless" while stu continued to babble in the background. another was at royal rumble '93 where he asked sensational sherri if he could watch her get changed or something random like that with an expectant little smile on his face. sherri wasn't having any of it, telling him he was a dirty old man and to get out. he looked so crestfallen! any special alfred memories?
Guest RetroRob215 Posted April 5, 2002 Report Posted April 5, 2002 My favorite Alfred Hayes moment is from a clip on the original Hulkamania video. Hulk makes his protein shake with Vince and Alfred watching. Hulk keeps offering some to Alfred, but Alfred keeps saying no. Vince finally convinces him to drink it. As soon as he gets in his mouth he puts on this really stupid face and "vomits". Oh...the memories....
Guest swan Posted April 5, 2002 Report Posted April 5, 2002 His face on the old TNT show on USA when Sika ate a raw fish. That was claaic shit.
Guest MoneyIvezaj Posted April 5, 2002 Report Posted April 5, 2002 Roddy Piper slapping him And on WWF World Tour 91, Alfred, Sherri and Brooklyn Brawler eating dinner in Italy Also Him and Sean Moony dressed as Trekkies on Invasion 92
Guest dreamer420 Posted April 5, 2002 Report Posted April 5, 2002 His announcing skills were terrible though, and to listen to him call a match with Sean Mooney was like a horrible method of torture.
Guest DEEP THOUGHT Posted April 6, 2002 Report Posted April 6, 2002 Lord Aflred Hayes...everytime he did commentary for a Coliseum Video match he would ALWAYS work in the following line whenever there was a close up of ANYTHING in the ring... "What great work by our cameramen there, our Coliseum Video exclusive cameramen, taking you right inside the ring, you cannot get any closer than that!" It also really bugged me how Alfred would mispronounce many words such as success (suck-sess) and Kato (catho). Not to mention all the bullshit stories he would make up while doing commentary. Oh-my-word Alfred sucked.
Guest Sloeberdeef Posted April 6, 2002 Report Posted April 6, 2002 I also remember him mispronounce words or names. One moment in particular comes to mind. At World Tour '92 he was having a hilarious discussion (I thought it was hilarious, anyway) with Sean Mooney about how to say "Kato" (Kah-to or Kay-to).
Guest Drury37 Posted April 6, 2002 Report Posted April 6, 2002 One of my favorites would have to be when he Shawn Mooney and Lord Alfred Hayes were dressed as trekkies in WWF Invasion '92,for some reason I just kept laughing. It just looked so bad it was funny. Thanks.
Guest MillenniumMan831 Posted April 6, 2002 Report Posted April 6, 2002 His skits at Royal Albert Hall w/ Bobby Heenan on World Tour 1992 were pretty good. Heenan: So, this is where the queen hangs her hat. Al Hayes: Bobby, you don't say things like that. Heenan: I'm sorry, I should know where I'm at; Hangs her crown. Hayes: (Half-Mumbling) Well, that's a little better, not a lot better but a little better.
Guest nWoScorpion Posted April 7, 2002 Report Posted April 7, 2002 Hes hard to listne to because of his Cokney(s/) accent (since hes british) thats why he mis pronounces things sayz some people.
Guest Posted April 7, 2002 Report Posted April 7, 2002 alfred's accent is most certainly not cockney. cockney accents originated in the poor east end area of london, alfred is a very well spoken-sounding upper class english gent. now dick van dyke in mary poppins - that's a cockney accent, or at least a badly plagiarised version of one. boom boom, nwo scorpion!
Guest Caliban Posted April 7, 2002 Report Posted April 7, 2002 Al's voice is like that of the Royal Family, very posh and snooty. Damn I hope Americans don't think all English people sound like that. Did you see the pictures in Power Slam? He does look ill. I can scan the pics if anyone wants to see them.
Guest Posted April 7, 2002 Report Posted April 7, 2002 That would be cool, if you could scan the PS photo. I know the guy was a terrible announcer, but he's just so endearing. Long live Alfred! I'd love to hear him call a modern match.
Guest Drury37 Posted April 7, 2002 Report Posted April 7, 2002 I could just picture Austin flicking somebody off and Lord Alfred Hayes going well an unsports man like gesture on the part of Mr.Austin and Shawn Mooney going you called that one Lord Alfred Hayes. Thanks.
Guest Posted April 7, 2002 Report Posted April 7, 2002 And my word! Poor Mae Young seems to have just given birth to a hand! Well I must say, this really is a turn up for the books! Poor Sexual Chocolate must be beside himself with worry. Back to you at ringside, Gorilla!
Guest Drury37 Posted April 8, 2002 Report Posted April 8, 2002 HAHAHAHA,that's too too funny!!! Thanks.
Guest Caliban Posted April 8, 2002 Report Posted April 8, 2002 As promised... L - R Jimmy Valiant, Lord Alfred Hayes and Ox Baker
Guest Posted April 10, 2002 Report Posted April 10, 2002 I saw Lord Alfred wrestle a few times back in the early to mid 70s. As I recall, he was a pretty decent wrestler (by the standards of the day) and an excellent heel. I thought it was pretty cool when he showed up more than a decade later on WWF, but his character had become more light hearted and bumbling. At any rate, I hated him for all the right reasons when I was a kid.
Guest dreamer420 Posted April 12, 2002 Report Posted April 12, 2002 I liked Alfred as well too. I was watching Supertape the other night and he has the most retarded segments called Calling The Action or something when he shows clips of the Rockers and Snuka and the names of the moves and displayed across the screen.
