Wcw/ecw alliance

I'm still getting over the terrible handling of the invasion angle.  I keep thinking on how it could be better.  Here are a few scenarios...

What do you think would have happened if Steph and Shane were not involved?

What do you think would have happened if WCW got a TV slot?

What do you think would have happened if Flair and Heyman were the legit owners of WCW and ECW during the invasion?

then it probably would have failed, but more like the split will fail, as oppsoed to the way the invasion failed

I gotta think that the whole WCW/ECW invasion angle would have been a hell of a lot better if the owners had been Ric Flair & Paul Heyman. That said it would have taken a lot better booking to get the angle and the actual invaders over. The Alliance was a crap name to start with, the WWF crushed all of the WCW/ECW guys, they were all jobbed out, they were treated like 2nd rate superstars plus the WWF had dug it's own grave with all of it's anti WCW propaganda over the years. The WCW/ECW guys should have been like the nWo when it was first introduced in WCW. They should have taken over programs and ran riot over the WWF and it's superstars. However, if they had gotten a program with the way the WWF took the angle it would have fallen flat on it's face due to lack of credible stars.

First off, sorry for having to move the thread guys. It's better suited for the Fantasy booking folder.

If Shane & Steph don't get involved, then the angle has a better chance to work. When Steph was announced as the new owner of ECW the crowd wasn't thrilled. Having a McMahon as the WCW & ECW owners hurt the angle in my opinion. Vince should of appeared live inside the WCW ring on the last Nitro and have all the WCW wrestlers, announcers, refs, etc, come out and say "YOU'RE FIRED!" As the show goes off the air. Buyout Flair's contract, some of the big names contract. Then on a Raw main event have the entire WCW roster rush the ring with weapons and attack everything in sight.

TNN wouldn't give Vince a TV slot for WCW. Why? I've heard they didn't want to become the "wrestling network". Which is B.S. Wrestling is the only thing people watch on that channel. WCW drew solid ratings in it's dying days.  assume the Excess timeslot was going to be for WCW, which is a bad time slot, but I think people would of taped the show if they weren't home. WCW never got the time slot, as the WWF already showed signs of the botched invasion.

If Flair & Heyman were legit owners. I don't think they even appear on WWF TV. Although Heyman might have since he's done it before. If they're on-air owners, then the angle seems a little more realistic. At no point did the WCW/ECW invasion seem realistic as McMahons owned the two groups.

I wish more people were on the fantasy booking folder, this is VERY worthy of discussion.

I never minded Shane's involvement, since he started the angle on the last Nitro.  However, when Stephanie was announced as the "owner" of ECW, it was definitely too much, Heyman should have definitely stayed ECW owner.  Stephanie took away too much credibility from an angle that was already lacking.

I don't think WCW would have ever gotten a TV slot, unless it was a slot like Excess.  Not many people watch Excess, that's partially because there's little new content, but also because it's a hard slot to make.  Even if WCW had gotten a TV slot, it would've gotten a bad TV slot like that one.  Besides, this would bring up the issue of how the belts would work, since part of the early inVasion was WCW guys stealing WWF belts, or something like that, the only one I cared about was Lance Storm with the IC belt, anyway, if the WCW guys had their own TV slot, they probably would've just had their own WCW belts only, which would make many of their storylines around those instead of the random attempts of messing with the WWF guys that it became.  Would this have been better? There's no doubt about that, but it would've been more like the "brand split" today than like the inVasion, and that means there wouldn't have been very much build up to any of those matches, there may not have even been any matches.

Flair and Heyman wouldn't be the legit owners of WCW and ECW.  Period.  It just wouldn't work like that; Shane was never the legit owner of WCW, Vince always owned WWF and WCW, and always licensed ECW.  That'd be like saying what if Flair actually owned RAW now... it's a ludicrous idea, bad for business.  The point of inVasion was to make it seem like Vince didn't have a monopoly through false competition, not to give him real competition.

A question though, weren't their ECW/WWF invasions before? I downloaded a clip of Sabu jumping off the RAW sign and Heyman marking out... how did those work? Why didn't the WWF just plan the invasion like that, would that have worked?

ECW invaded the WWF and the WWF invaded ECW in 97.  It was pretty cool.  Heyman was the first to say Brian was Jerry's son.  Heyman and Flair should have been given their respective promotions, Vince should know that in wrestling, compeition is good for business.

Yeah, that February 97 ECW invasion of Raw, in my opinion, was one of the greatest Raws ever. It was my first exposure to ECW. I had heard about it(mostly through ECW chants for Shane "Dean" Douglas), but never seen it. Sabu came off the Raw sign, the bWo showed up, the Eliminators took out the ring announcer, and Vince decided to bring Raw back to where it all started, the Manhattan Center. It was just great.

When it became more about Stephanie than anyone else (as usual) the alliance was doomed.

The WWF wrestlers attitude didn't help either.

Ugh...Vince could make a guy hate wres...sports entertainment.  It is kind of ironic another promotion is responsible for MOST of the WWF's success.  With Vince stealing ECW's ideas and passing them off as his "Attitude" bullshit.  It also helped that he presented a sort of "alliance" if you will, with ECW.

He sees what they are doing, takes it mainsteam to pass it off as his idea, and becomes chummy with the promotion.

Maybe WCW should have been handled like the ECW situation.

What did WCW have that the WWF could steal though? Aside from their biggest names, not much.  ECW had a distinctive rebellious style difference that could be converted to the "Attitude Era".  From what I know of WCW pre-Russo (which, admittedly, is not much) it was the total opposite of that.

What I meant was having WCW invade the WWF like the ECW invasion of 97.  Making it similar, with a mouthpiece like Heyman was for ECW.

My idea:

Shane and Stephanie buy the respective companies, but through a number of backstage bits (those all-too-common segments where heels discuss private things in front of the camera), we find that Paul Heyman is the real brains behind the operation, using the McMahon children's pocketbooks and placing them as a lightning rod for any kind of opposition.

Of course, conveniently the fans are aware of this and the wrestlers from both sides are not.

The angle would make Heyman into a bit of a reinvented Mr. McMahon character. He's so posessed to take out the WWF, that he even aligns himself and ECW with the WCW brand that his fans always hated. Pairing Paul and WCW would give reason for ECW fans to dislike the guy for the sake of the angle (and prevent the sort of problems we're seeing with Hogan and the nWo.)

Paul has all the things necessary to play the heel who's angry and somewhat of a scaredy-cat at the same time. He's hyper, has a voice that reminds me of Newman from Seinfeld, and there's enough legetimacy in ECW's bankruptcy to make it believable enough that he blames McMahon and not himself for ECW's failure.

You could have such a character to capitalize on there without turning it entirely into yet another Vince Vs His Kids moment. Too bad they tanked it. It could even have worked with the limited rosters, as nobody would believe that Shane or certainly Heyman could afford to purchase WCW fully including all the wrestlers.

McMahon should just sell the WCW to someone else for ten times what he payed for it.  If you don't think people would pay for the WCW name and the cool logo the WWF made, you are mistaken.  This may get back some of Vince's XFL loss as well.

If I was Vince(God forbid) I would pay off Heyman's ECW debts, buy the company, give it to Heyman, and let him sign some of the WWF wrestlers.  This would give fans an alternate AND would make Heyman fill so thankful that he wouldn't seriously try to defeat Vince.

Heyman could also STILL be employed with the WWF while running his own company, like Cornette.
