I Miss You by DMX tops them in my opinion.

Savatages "Somewhere in Time/Believe" (yes, I know they are two separate songs, but they go under the same CD heading and they fit so well together). Especially the last two verses before the guitar solo;

"I never wanted to know, never wanted to see

I wasted my time till time wasted me

Never wanted to go, only wanted to stay

'Cause the person I am are the parts that I play

So I plot and I plan, hope and I scheme

To the lure of a night filled with unfinished dreams

And I'm holding on tight to a world gone astray

As they charge me for years I can no longer pay"

Alan Jackson's Sept. 11th song is devestating.  Imagine...there are illiterate countryfolk out there who can't tell the difference between Iraq and Iran.  And their albums go to #1.  I'm tearing up just thinking about it.

The acoustic version of Radiohead's "Motion Picture Soundtrack" gets to me sometimes.  The album version is great, too.  I don't get sad to music often.

Thompson Twins - "If You Were Here"

It's not inherently a sad song (after all, it plays during the happy ending of Sixteen Candles), but for me it is.

That was Jane Siberry, and I liked it too. Nice to see someone acknowledge "It Can't Rain All The Time", since when most people refer to that album, it's usually about the Helmet/STP/Rollins-type songs

Bloodhound Gang - Kiss Me Where It Smells Funny

An engaging love song that has me bawling like a baby everytime I listen to it.

On a more serious note...

Ozzy Osbourne - Dreamer

That song is the story of my life.

A new entry: The Replacements' "Here Comes a Regular."  It'd make me even sadder if I wasn't so ecstatic about how fucking awesome Tim is.

The Good Life - Weezer (alright, so I'm an emo-loving pussy, sue me)

Trouble (and/or) Yellow - Coldplay (soooo depressing...)

and lastly

One - Metallica (Jesus...a song about a quadraplegic landmine victim with total sense loss...I can't stand listening to the song, it's so sad.  I always skip over it to Trapped Under Ice, another depressing song, but in a scary way.)

hey Ignatz, read Johnny Got his gun by Dalton Trumbo. the 'One' song is based on the book but doesn't express the pain or surreal existence that is found in the book. It's also a critical commentary on capitalism, religion, obscure meanings like freedom, and of course war.

Goddamnit, I was going to say that.  Well, I will anyway.  "Johnny Got His Gun" will change the way you think about life.  It's the best war novel ever.

I wasn't quite sure what songs to list because many songs can be 'sad' in funny ways, some songs are flat out depressing while others have more of a bittersweet sadness. There's also songs which don't necessarily fit either of these discriptions but make you personally come over all meloncholic for any number of reasons.

Uncle Tupelo's version of Moonshiner is a real lump in the throat classic, totally withdrawn and resignated.

Grandaddy: Jed the Humanoid.

Lucinda Williams: Blue

Replacements: Unsatisfied/Answering Machine/Sixteen Blue (all on the same album!)

Golden Smog: Please tell my brother

Bonnie Prince Billy: I see a darkness/Another day full of dread/Death to everyone (all on the same uplifting album!).

Ummm...Blink? Online Songs? A song with a na-na-na-na breakdown? Sad? I can only assume what kind of personal experience lies behind that...
