I pulled out my No Alternative CD a little while ago and Bob Mould's "Can't fight It" was playing and an overwhelming depression came over me.

the saddest song i have ever heard was tori amos's winter. any and everyone can relate about missed oppurtunities in life, and hers was that she never made herself happy and just totally realized it near the end.

the beatles are good for sad songs (or any kind of songs, for that matter).  first song i ever cried to was 'eleanor rigby'.  the lyrics, the vocals & the strings just rip your heart out.  'julia' is spooky & extremely sad if you know who julia actually is.  'golden slumbers' is heartbreaking.

another one: 'hold on' by sarah mclachlan.  for the longest time i thought it was just a song about a woman who thinks her guy might be leaving her, but i listened to it after my friend told me that the guy has aids & just lost it.  for a year, no matter where i was i'd cry whenever i heard it.

i'd also like to nominate an album: 'plastic ono band' by john lennon.  that whole album is just ONE LONG DOWN NOTE.  the production is stark naked, it has the single most emotional vocals i've ever heard on a record (no exaggeration), & every one of the songs is sad & angry.  when you hear a righteous idealist like john lennon sing 'the dream is over', nothing seems the same.

Gad, how did you FIND this thread?

Anyways, just about any of those slow Motown songs will do it for me. "When a Man Loves a Woman" is good for insta-depression.

And yes, "Golden Slumbers" can either be depressing or make you feel really good depending on your mood. Good thing "Carry that Weight" is right behind it to make us all feel good.

Aimee Mann's "SaveMe" gets me worked up sometimes, because of a personal association with it.

"Konstantine" and "Brick" and everything from Plastic Ono Band gets me kinda down, but whenever a song depresses me I just play the Hartford Whalers theme song.

Oh yeah. The Magnetic Fields' "Papa Was A Rodeo" nearly choked me up one time, but I was drunk. That the song is about the love between two gay cowboys possibly says something about me I'd rather not know.

If you ever get a chance, check out Big Star's "Holocaust". That is the most depressing song I've ever heard in my life. Stark, dry piano, a resigned tone of voice, and it was intended to be one of the most utterly uncommercial songs ever done.

But how many hits about your mother dying in her bed can you name?

Layla by Derek and The Dominoes is the only one I can think of.

I still say these two songs can be uplifting or depressing depending on mood:

Katy Song -- Red House Painters

Exit Music(for a film) -- Radiohead

If you want to nominate albums, you should nominate Break The Cycle.

"Get What You Give" by New Radicals always depresses me because that song reminds me of some great times I had when I was little. So I get a little teary eye listening to it.

Also, Greenday "Time Of Your Life."

Life of Agony's River Runs Red album is one of the more depressing mofo's I've ever heard. It doesn't make me sad, per se, but it's so easy to relate to, it's just about a guy's horrible week, and his life going to shit to the point where he just can't stand it any more and kills himself. Fucking awesome concept.
