Used games

Recommended Posts

Guest razazteca

Just curious if anybody buys used games?  I find good bargains at the GameSTop store at the mall, they always have good deals for PS1 and Dreamcast games.  With used games going at under $20 and recent returned games going at about $25-$30.

Also Bleemcast is the best thing that I bought at the store!!!! I have a Bleemcast controller adapter for the Dreamcast I like to use Playstation controllers for fighting games.  Works great on the SNK games.

Did you buy the Tekken 3 Bleemcast? I've been looking all over for that, but no dice :(

EB is where I get "previously owned" games.  If there is a game I want and there are both used and new copies, I'll buy the used to save a few bucks since I can bring it back if the used is scratched.

BTW, EB is running a special, that I think is kind of bad for their business, with the new baseball games: bring in 2 PS2, XBox, or Gamecube games and you get one of the '03 baseball games free.  I traded in Crazy Taxi and Triple Play Baseball, which would have got me $25-$30 store credit for PS2 All Star Baseball 2003 ($50).  Even the clerk said that's not very good for business.

Man that is a good deal.

Sorta...

Is it?

Depends, but I don't like baseball so I won't do it.

I sometimes do buy used games and, usually, I get away with the better end of the deal.  It's all about picking your dealer.

For example, I walk into Software Etc. and I grab a "used" copy of High Heat Baseball 2003 only about three days after it's been released for $35.  Now, this used copy probably came from somebody who opened the wrapping, played the game twice and decided they didn't like it, as the CD was virtually scratchless.  So, in this case, I saved 15 bucks on what was essentially a brand new release.

In all cases, though, you should probably ask to examine the game that you want to buy - any place that's worth its salt will be confident enough to let you see whether or not that used copy of Metal Gear Solid is $10 bucks is cheap because it has a gigantic gash down the middle of the CD.  In the cases of cartridges, just check the contacts and (most importantly) give it a gentle shake to make sure there's nothing swimming around loose in there that shouldn't be.

I can't remember the last time I bought a new game for my PS2. Although be warned....

Months ago I bought Diablo for the PS1 at some piss-ant store (normally I go to the local EB). After a few days of playing it, I wanted to return it because I didn't care for the console version. I went back to the SAME store and gave the game to some clerk who, for the most part, had an orgasam over the fact he finally found Diablo for the PS1. Of course, seeing how I BOUGHT THE GAME at HIS PLACE OF EMPLOYMENT several days before, I figured this kid to be a few fries short of a happy meal.

Anyway, he then says to me that he can't accept the return because the disc was too scratched up. Huh? I bought the damn thing from that place days ago and I was pretty sure I hadn't scratched up the surface with a coin or rusty nail. I then let him retrive the 3 used games I was GOING to purchase and when he finally rang up my bill I opened the cases, looked at the discs and said "I'm not going to buy these -- they're all scratched up" and left.

On a side note, EB's accepting Triple Play as one of the exchanges for HH Baseball?!?! Damn, I saw that promotion but I didn't think they'd accept sports games!

Bleemcast is a PS1 emulator for the DC, that, until their demise last year, was produced by a company called bleem! Unfortunately, legal problems caused them to say "fuck this", and they decided to fold. Supposedly, Gran Turisimo 2 actually looks better on the DC than it does on the PS1.

From what I gather, pretty much all Bleemcast games look somewhat better on DC than they do on PS1.  I think Bleem went out of their way to use DC's power to clean up the look of the games.

It was a neat little idea, but I never really could figure out the point.  What's the market for an emulator that allows you to use a niche system that sold maybe 8,000,000 copies to play games from a blockbuster system that sold 70,000,000 copies?  How many people actually have a DC but not a PS1?  I'd be surprised if it was more than a few hundred thousand.  That's such a tiny market that even if Bleemcast didn't get bogged down by legal troubles, I doubt it would have made much of an impact.

Now an emulator that allowed you to play DC games on a PS2, that's something that would sell. :)

Hell yes I buy used games, it's a great deal for something that is most likely garunteed by the seller so you can always go bitch at them if something goes wrong with it.

I'm actually one of the few (it seems) people who owns a DC, but not a PS1. I've mainly been happy with my PC gaming, but hey, it was fifty bucks and it had an awesome wrestling game, so I figured why not?

If there's anyone who knows, could they clear this up for me? Someone told me that most PS1 games can be emulated via Bleemcast. If this is true, then why are there different versions of Bleemcast (GT2, Tekken 3)? Is each version better optimized for that specific game, but still able to emulate other ones?
