Guest Nevermortal Report post Posted February 9, 2002 Not the movie. The movie rules. But I told my mom to pick me up the FMJ DVD when she took a trip to the mall. She returns with a DVD with no extras, just the feature (NOT IN WIDESCREEN...GRRR), and a trailer. And she paid 25 bucks for the thing. Is there any other version of the DVD with some extras & a widescreen?
Guest Annoyed Grunt Report post Posted February 9, 2002 Sadly, there's only the one version available. I'd love to see a FMJ DVD loaded with e \xtras.
Guest Nevermortal Report post Posted February 9, 2002 Right about now, I could settle for a commentary track with Private Snowball. But, I'd like to see R. Lee Ermey, Matt Modine, Adam Baldwin, and Vincent D'Onofrio all have audio commentary tracks. Maybe a behind the scenes (I doubt this...Kubrick was very secretive)...a deleted scene or two. Guest J*ingus Report post Posted February 9, 2002 Few of Kubrick's movies are available in widescreen, because the director often preferred pan-&-scan, for whatever reason.
Guest teke184 Report post Posted February 9, 2002 There ARE two version of Full Metal Jacket, but the only differences are the quality of the video transfer and the type of sound provided (The original has mono while the new version has 5.1 sound). IMHO, there are only three Kubrick films which have a proper presentation on DVD: 2001 (anamorphic widescreen) Dr. Strangelove (documentaries) Spartacus (The Criterion version has anamorphic widescreen, commentaries, etc)
Guest tripledot Report post Posted February 11, 2002 i read somewhere (q & a on ebert's site, perhaps) that kubrick shot his movies in 4:3 aspect ratio, then cut them (as in, cut off the top and/or bottom of the screen) for their theatrical release. so if you want the movie in the original aspect ratio, you've got it. if you just want widescreen for the sake of having widescreen... well you're stupid. Guest teke184 Report post Posted February 11, 2002 Kubrick's mindset on 4:3 video transfers was for the simple reason that widescreen was unacceptable on TV and VHS before the mid-90's. If Kubrick hadn't been a recluse and so out of touch with society in his last few years, he would have seen that widescreen is now accepted by many people and can be shown on home video and TV without upsetting the entire viewing audience. And, BTW, the bitching about the aspect ratios on the Kubrick films is a legitimate complaint because they WERE screened at theaters in a widescreen format (probably 1.66 or 1.78). It's not like people are trying to get a widescreen Casablanca, which would be something completely new as the film was only shown in 1.33 full frame. I'm not saying that any of his films besides 2001 or Spartacus needs to be in 2.35 (the REALLY widescreen format), but there are enough visible mistakes that can be seen on the edges of the full frame transfer that it would be worth it to crop them out and have a nice 1.66 or 1.78 widescreen transfer, the preferred presentation of a Kubrick film theatrically. (The big visual mistake in any of these Kubrick Collection films would be the visible helicopter rotors in the opening shot of The Shining. That could be easliy corrected by changing the aspect ratio to the one used theatrically.)
