Slayer 0 Report post Posted November 5, 2003 I was reminded of this when I saw Dave O'Neill's sig with Tenzan and the belt: Those trophies they bring into the ring in a post-championship-match ceremony in NJ... what are they called and what's the story behind their inclusion in the ceremony? And do the other puro feds do that as well with their belts (I've only seen a few AJ title bouts and those were a fair while ago)? Side comment: In one way, I like their inclusion in the theatrics, as that combined with the fact the title is only defended monthly/bi-monthly makes the title seem much more valuable than what a certain fed's title has devalued into on this side of the pond, yet on the other hand, it seems a bit foreign (pun mildly intended) to me. Guest Black Tiger Report post Posted November 5, 2003 According to Jim Ross and Tony Schivone in the WCW version of the first WCW/NJPW Supershow (aka take this with a grain of salt) they are refered to as "winner's trophys" and they make "great momento's for your trophy case". They're probably just for decoration and to magnify the importance of the event. During the opening ceremony of the 1998 Champions Carnival Kawada had to return the trophy he got for winning the 1997 tournament,
Red Hot Thumbtack In The Eye 0 Report post Posted November 5, 2003 So on the big big shows they are somewhat saying "you are truly wicked bad ass, so have a trophy to go with your belt" ? That was basically my guess on the whole thing.
Guest Dave O'Neill, Journalist Report post Posted November 6, 2003 Um, I'm pretty much a puro n00b myself, my only real exposure to it being the Best of Japan DVD sets that Golden Boy pumps out every year, and daily perusuals of puroresufan. Tenzan is in my sig because I became such a mark for him watching the stuff, mainly because i found myself gawping at his look (his old one, with the skunk mullet and his old shorts and "to the ring" gear. Plus the fact he's a great worker and stuff cant hurt
