Guest mesepher Report post Posted November 12, 2003 what does everyone think of the new Dream Theater album? I'm still a bit uncertain about it... it does have its moments though (good and bad). This is without a doubt the heaviest album they've put out. Almost the entire album is fast and in your face, fast playing that sometimes leads nowhere. This album definitely labels Petrucci as a one trick pony. still trying to catch on to it
Guest Doyo Report post Posted November 16, 2003 I've got it now and listened to it a few times. So far overall I would say it is a good album, especially compared to most other stuff that gets released. My complaint is that it seems that Petrucci and Portnoy have taken over the band more than ever. They write all the lyrics expect for a 3 minute song. A lot of their lyric writing seems to follow the same pattern with a lot of word rhyming going on. Portnoy, who has admitted he is a control freak, even said on a recent webchat that a new rule was put in place for writing lyrics. Yes, a band that suppose to be experimental has an actual rule on the way lyrics have to be written for their songs! Portnoy said that Myung had not brought any lyrics to the table since this rule was put in place. Myung is just as good at writing lyrics as anyone else in the band, as can be seen from the song "Learning to Live." Petrucci's guitar is more up front in the mix and more grungy sounding than ever. Labree's vocals sound more in the back than before. Who were the album's producers? Petrucci and Portnoy if you couldn't have guessed. Don't get me wrong, the Petrucci and Portnoy Show provides for some great music, but I think it would be even better if the other guys got to contribute more.
