The best of 2000

Recommended Posts

Guest

I too have become a HHH basher these days, but I think we all owe it to him to making the year 2000, especially thru Summerslam, the best year in the WWF(at least since I began watching in 98)...

A perfect illustration is to look at the best matches in 2000...

The top 20...

1) The Rock vs. HHH, Iron Man Match, Judgement Day

2) Cactus Jack vs. HHH, Street Fight, Royal Rumble

3) TLC, Dudleyz vs. Hardyz vs. Edge/Christian, Summerslam

4) Cactus Jack vs. HHH, Hell in a Cell, No Way Out

5) Six Pack Challenge, Hell in a Cell, Armaggedon

6) Triple Threat Ladder Match, D/H/E&C, Wrestlemania 16

7) Chris Jericho vs. HHH, Last Man Standing, Fully Loaded

8) The Rock vs. HHH, WWF Title Match, Backlash

9) The Rock vs. Mick Foley vs. The Big Show vs. HHH, WWF Title Match, Wrestlemania 16

10) Chris Benoit vs. Chris Jericho, 2/3 Falls, Summerslam

11) Chris Jericho vs. Chris Benoit, IC Title Match, Backlash

12) Kurt Angle vs. HHH vs. The Rock, WWF Title Match, Summerslam

13) Chris Benoit vs. HHH, No Mercy

14) Chris Jerico vs. HHH, WWF Title Match, April RAW

15) Kurt Angle vs. The Rock, WWF Title Match, No Mercy

16) Hardyz vs. Dudleyz, Table Match, Royal Rumble

17) Chris Benoit vs. The Rock, WWF Title Match, Fully Loaded

18) Chris Jericho vs. Chris Benoit, Submission Match, Judgement Day

19) Chris Benoit vs. The Undertaker vs. Kane vs. The Rock, WWF Title Match, Unforgiven

20) Rikishi vs. Stone Cold Steve Austin, No Mercy

Oh my God!

That puts in spots 1,2,4,5,7,8,9,12,13,and 14...

Let us hope he returns to form

ya the stars were aligned perfectly for him that year...

I hope he gets at least near that point again...sometimes it hurts me to say 'fuck HHH'

He was pretty bad though from late 2000 to early 2001. More nights than not were promos and backstage skits with no actual match, and excuses galore including a fake anniversary and cars dropping on his head.

I think a lot of his heat here (and I don't mean the good kind of heat) comes from his relationship with Stephanie, who (because of her shitty booking) is just as irritating in real life to us as she is on the screen.

Also, since the days of the Clique there's been this odd mysterious habit of HHH's friends getting over. It was an arguable point earlier but now with X-Pac getting a huge push it's harder to deny now more than ever.

if i remember correctly, trips needed some time off from an injury after survivor series.  he was also in traction after the armageddon match.  so, can't really fault him for not wrestling much.

most people seem to ignore the fact that, even before the quad injury, trips was hurt a lot.  he'll probably have to retire before he's 35.

I didn't think HHH was great, look who he wrestled:rock, foley, austin, benoit, jericho, angle

i've always thought HHH was a good wrestler who could be carried to great matches.

I have to agree.  HHH is a good, and sometimes great wrestler, who has worked with opponents that make him seem phenomenal.

As for the year 2000.  This is not a popular sentiment, but I think The Rock was easily the wrestler of the year.  Especially because he had a good match with Rikishi and was saddled with the Big Show.  He had 4+ star matches with Angle, which is something HHH couldn't do.  In fact, with all of the people mentioned, Benoit, Angle, Jericho, Austin, Foley.  With the exception of the one match that HHH had with Austin at No Way Out, Rock has had better matches with each of those guys than HHH has.  Although, I will concede that match quality on such a high level is a matter of opinion.

i'd say Benoit was the North American wrestler of the year.

I'd give Benoit North American wrestler of the year in 2000, but HHH worked his ass off and gave good efforts, plus sold well for everyone.

I think that the HHH of 2000 is gone and will not re-surface again. HHH at the moment is a shadow of the guy who had constant **** matches in 2000. I think that his injury has basically ended his career as top in ring performer.

In 2000, HHH was still willing to be a team guy.  Remember when he let Taka kick his ass on RAW? Remember when the Brooklyn Brawler pinned him?  Now, hes a selfish asshole who's best match since returning was against Jericho in a VERY lackluster Wrestlemania finale.  What the hell happened?  I mean my god, in 2001, Jeff Hardy won the IC title and could of arguably been one of the most popular guys on the roster.  Five days later, HHH whooped the shit out of him, buried him and killed his carreer as far as i'm concerned.  HHH we loved in 2000 is gone, dead and never to return i'm afraid.

I've said it before(at least once) 2000 was the greatest year of WWF tv EVER. Bar NONE.

It will be at least Five years before we see such greatness again.

I wouldn't say that. The whole point of the Backlash main event was to have three titles on the line. If he hadn't got the title back it wouldn't work.

i don't think it was the greatest year of wwf tv ever. maybe best ppv's but not tv. i liked the early attitude era with bret, austin, and the early dx better.

Its funny, because I just watched my Break Down the Walls tape (which features the HHH/Jericho feud of 2000, as well as the Benoit one...its actually a pretty good one hour tape...highly recommended for any other Jericho marks like myself), and HHH was SO damn good in 2000....He was about 20 lbs lighter, was a F'N AWESOME heel, and actually wasnt afraid to sell. He seriously needs to get rid of some of tht bloated mass and just work on his ring timing...he was great in 2000, and if he can return to form, will be invaluable to the WWF once again.

Also during the time of 2000 HHH didn't mind blading for the cause. Remember how many PPV's he bladed in during 2000.

You can hardly call him a totally selfish prick when he was willing to do that for the buisness.

And to take some of those bumps and was taking on a regular basis wasn't selfish all those bumps must have had to slash years off his career.

Are you kidding? They gave RIKISHI a main event heel push. I mean, cmon.

I do miss the good HHH matches, like Last Man Standing (which he was working with a nasty back injury, IIRC), but I just hope 2/3 Falls isn't the last one.

I don't think Triple H was carried to good matches; he had a great match in early 2000 with Rikishi and it was better than The Rock's match with said fatass. Triple H had awesome matches all through 2000, until Survivor Series, when he started getting back problems, which he worked through. Eventually, he started having good matches again, with Angle at Royal Rumble 2001, Austin at No Way Out, Undertaker at WrestleMania, and in the Tag Title match against Benoit and Jericho.

If Triple H would lose some poundage, expand his moveset a wee bit, and sell a bit more, he would be awesome again, and I wouldn't get so much flack for being a HHH fan.

Secondly, I just want to say that if you factor out the last two or three months of 2000, it would have to be one of the best years in WWF history. There were so many great matches and moments, and things were always interesting. Yes, the storylines were sort of boring, but look what happened when they started trying to get complicated: everything else sucked. Let's face it: since Vince Russo left, storylines have not been stellar for the WWF, so why do they still focus so much on them? Why don't they just have average, traditional storylines accompanied by good matches? It worked in 2000, why did they abandon it?

If he stops playing the politician backstage also, maybe we can see good matches not only from him, but from the guys who we love that are stuck in upper midcard hell (Angle, Jericho, Austin, RVD, Booker T)......

What, after he had just finished a 26-minute street fight with Steve austin...

anyways, people talk about the good talents HHH had to fight against (Rock,FoleyBenoit,Angle,Jericho)

Jericho had to fight against the same talents (Save Foley) Plus Austin, so who's to say that HHH wasn't carrying the matches...

Right, but he was out of action for some real life back work (cyatic nerve, I think) and thus was left having to cut promos via tape sitting in a chair, revealing he was behind absolutely everything, and then he gets fake injured in one of the dumbest finishes in two years.

Mick Foley was the MVP. He made HHH into a main eventer.Without Foley losing clean in 3 strait ppv matches, and never getting a job in return whose do say if HHH would be where he is today.

For all the great matches HHH had, let us not forget about the scraping of the Love Triangle Storyline, HHH being behind the Austin attack, and HHH's refusal to really give someone a big win. He was probably still a backstabbing manipulative bastard, but he could get away with it because he had so many great matches that year.
