Guest Trivia247 Report post Posted November 14, 2003 There was a huge controversy backstage at last night's Smackdown taping. Several people on the Smackdown roster were said to be furious at Michael Hayes, as he rubbed a lot of people the wrong way. Hayes lobbied throughout the day to have John Cena hit Chris Benoit with his "FU" finishing move following their tag team match. The problem was, however, Hayes was the only one who thought this should be done. Everyone else felt that it would hurt Cena's crowd reaction, as it would hurt his transition to becoming a babyface. Hayes wanted Cena to FU Benoit because he felt it would make Cena look like a "Steve Austin-like" character who didn't care about anything. The issue appeared to be settled that Cena wouldn't be doing the move until Hayes approached Vince McMahon later in the day. He ran his idea by Vince, who wasn't exactly sold on it, but he agreed to let it go down because Hayes gave him the impression that the other writers agreed with him. Hayes was told telling people that it was Vince's idea to have Cena do the FU and not him, but obviously nobody believed him. What makes this matter worse is that there is some suspicion that Hayes, who works as a writer for the RAW brand, was pushing for the finish in order for it to have a negative effect on one of the top Smackdown superstars. After the match took place and Cena hit Benoit with the FU, the result was a crowd sitting both silent and confused since they were left wondering if Cena was still a babyface or was once again a heel. This is the second time in the past few weeks that Hayes has been involved in a controversial incident. After downing a few drinks, he made a complete idiot of himself at Triple H and Stephanie McMahon's wedding by going up on stage and singing his rendition "Jailhouse Rock", before having the microphone taken away from him by Linda McMahon.
