Guest Report post Posted April 8, 2002 I was watching an interview on the "YES" Station with the Yankees Manager Joe Torre last night, and he was asked "what is it like working for George Steinbrener compared to Ted Turner?" I found this part really interesting because of his answer. Joe Torre claimed Ted Turner wanted results right there and right now. Turner had no patience and he was hands on too much and would make decisions which should have been made by the Manager or General Manager. He also claimed Ted Turner would get to close with the players and would allow them to come to him if they had problems instead of coming to Joe Torre or the General manager. Torre pretty much summed it up by saying Ted Turner would let the players and the wrong people run rough shot over everything. Being a Wrestling fan and being a long time fan of WcW, I was pretty shocked to hear everything Joe Torre said was word for word what most people from WcW says about Turner. The wrong people having too much power, i.e., Eric Bischoff and letting the players i.e. Wrestlers run rough shot over everything. Sorry if this isn't considered a "Wrestling" topic, but I just thought I would put this on the board to show that Ted Turner is a terrible boss. Billionaire or Not. Guest Report post Posted April 12, 2002 Youre right...that basically is a great example of the story of WCW in a nutshell. Joe P.
Guest Some Guy Report post Posted April 12, 2002 The wrong people part is like WCW, but Turner never really took an active role in WCW, like Torre said he did with the Braves.
Guest Report post Posted April 12, 2002 The wrong people part is like WCW, but Turner never really took an active role in WCW, like Torre said he did with the Braves. Yeah, it was kinda like a "pet project/recreational enjoyment/get back at Vince" thing for Turner. Even Foley says in his first book that for all the time he spent in WCW, there was only like 1 meeting that he was actually present. Joe P.
Guest Report post Posted April 13, 2002 Turner may not have been "hands on" as much in WcW as with the Braves, however it's no secret he let Bischoff and wrestlers run his show and blow a hell of a lot of money. Bad business. btw, I'm a Yankees fan so Turner and the Braves can go to Hell!
Guest RickyB Report post Posted April 13, 2002 I don't think Eric Bischoff was the wrong choice to be in control of WCW. Eric Bischoff took WCW ahead of the WWF in the ratings and drew the best buyrates that WCW ever got (Bash At The Beach 96 (Hogan heel turn), Starrcade 96 (Hogan-Piper), Bash At The Beach 97 (can't remember, know it drew a big buyrate though), Starrcade 97 (Hogan-Sting)). Bischoff's run was the ONLY time in WCW's history that WCW actually turned in a profit at the end of the year. In 1996, 1997 and 1998 WCW made huge profits (The only year Bischoff made a loss in control of WCW was 1993), but as soon as Nash, Sullivan and Russo got in control of the company WCW went downhill, fast. Bischoff should have been given a longer run in control of WCW. If they'd let him stay in control near the end of 1998 and during 1999 then WCW would probably be in control today. Bischoff knew a lot of things about the business that other people didn't think about. -Bischoff made all Titles look important (other than the Tag Team Titles). The Cruiserweight Title was seen as THE most important Non-Heavyweight Titles in the World. The TV Title was seen important because it had that Time limit stipulation and because they had that Benoit-Booker T best of 7 series. The US Title was always seen as an important Title because all the Wrestlers that held it were big name Wrestlers (Flair, DDP, Bret Hart). The World Title (during Bischoff's reign) was almost always an important Title. -Bischoff never tried to compete with the WWF in terms of production values. He knew that he couldn't do it, but he made sure that the production was always decent. Unlike Russo. -The TV sets always looked good when he was in charge (IMO) the Nitro 95-98 set was classic. -WCW's storylines used to always last for long time instead of WWF's 1 month angles. The nWo angle formed over 2 months before Hogan joined and then lasted for 3 years, only really going cold in late 98. -WCW Wrestlers were nearly always getting a lot of heat. Unlike during later Russo, Nash & Sullivan runs when WCW Wrestlers were getting no response from the fans. If anyone was put in control who shouldn't have been it was Vince Russo.
