Castlevania: Lament of Innocence

I picked this game up a few days ago. At first, I didn't think it was going to turn out any good. An hour or two later, I couldn't put it down. Of course, I was forced to quit playing so that I could get some sleep for work, however when I got off the next day, I was at it again.

I would have to say that this is a successful 3D Castlevania. If feels a lot like Devil May Cry (DMC) and sometimes the camera angle can be a pain (especially since you can't change the camera angle) but those are pretty much the only gripes I have about the game. Well, actually the "real-time window" is a pain too. It's hard to use a potion to gain back some life when you're getting wailed on.

It plays a lot like Super Metroid in a sense. You have to "clear" different areas. Once you clear five different areas, you can enter the final area. All the Castlevania trademarks are there however. The whip, the hearts, sub-weapons, etc. The music is great and graphically the game is beautiful. It only takes about ten hours or so to beat, but it takes a little bit longer than that to get 100% completion. They also added "orbs" which each have different effects that they cause the sub-weapons to do. Also, you can equip stuff sort of like in Symphony of the Night (SotN), although admittedly, this game doesn't have as much of the RPG element that SotN does. You can, however, find items such as the Fire Whip, Ice Whip, etc. The game also holds a "combo" feature very similar to DMC. The controls feel good though. Despite the 3D environment, it's not difficult to strike enemies.

None of the secrets are really too tough to find, although you have to do a lot of backtracking. For example, in one area you'll find a door that is locked with a certain key. The key is obtained in a different area, so when you get the key, you have to return. Then, behind the door will be an item that lets you get through another door in a third area that wasn't reachable before. I think that adds to the game however.

I bought it for $49.99. Brand new, and although it's somewhat or a short game, I think it's worth every penny. I mean, just look at Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. It was a pretty short game too. Especially if you don't count the inverted castle.

I have to say, if you're a fan of the Castlevania series, hell even if you're not, at the very least give this game a rent. Just the soundtrack and environment will be worth the price of the rental.

I rented it, and while it was a fun diversion, it felt way too much like Devil May Cry and not enough like a real Castlevania game.

Castlevania should be 2D, and no one's ever gonna convince me otherwise. This was an OK game, but if they scrap the 2D line of games entirley for the 3D series I'll be pissed, to say the least.

If you don't mind my asking, how long did you play the game? That was pretty much my exact logic upon first playing the game. I couldn't overlook it at first because I despise Devil May Cry. This game, however, was worth every penny.

For a while. I think I got like halfway through the game.

I didn't say I hated it (I like DMC, if that helps), I just said I'd prefer a 2D Castlevania. To me, the enviorments were too simple and the atmosphere just wasn't there for me besides the music, and that's what makes Castlevania, Castlevania.

Yeah, the loading rooms are a bit tedious, but at least you can collect hearts in them and a lot of them have enemies as well.

Shit, I think a couple of them have secret areas. I recall jumping through a painting....
