Guest Kahran Ramsus Report post Posted February 9, 2002 WWF Wrestlemania VI -In honour of Wrestlemania XVIII coming home to Canada, I have decided to do this rant. It was good 12 years ago. Let's see if it holds up. -Live from Toronto, ON. April 1, 1990. -Your hosts are Gorilla Monsoon & Jesse Ventura, the best announcing team ever by my count. -We start with a promo that compares Hulk Hogan & Ultimate Warrior to gods. Maybe that's where they got the idea. -As a side note, this is a very important Wrestlemania. It was the last Wrestlemania for Ventura, Andre the Giant (as a wrestler), and Ravishing Rick Rude (and Honky Tonk Man, but no one cares about him). This is generally considered to be the last show of the WWF Golden Age. Everything else, despite a brief revival in 1992, was downhill from here until the Attitude Era was launched. -Robert Goulet sings Oh Canada. He does a good job, singing the song the way it was meant to be sung instead of adding his own personal touches. -Koko B. Ware (w/ Frankie) vs. Rick Martel: Hey, the WWF is actually intelligent enough to start off with a Canadian. Unfortunately, he's supposed to be the heel. Martel isn't a jobber yet. That would start after the Roberts feud. Martel attacks Koko as the ref is checking his boots. Koko hits a flying crossbody for two. Dropkick by Koko. Another. Backdrop by Koko. Clothesline by Koko sends Martel through the ropes. Koko does the Bird Dance. Martel is slingshotted back in. Shoulderblock by Koko, but he misses a charge and Martel tosses him outside. Koko gets back in. Martel works over the back. Vertical suplex by Martel for two. Flying axehandle by Martel. Backbreaker by Martel. Martel goes for the Quebec Crab, but can't get it on. Koko makes the ropes, and Martel has to let go. Martel rams Koko's head into the turnbuckle, which is something you don't do to Koko. Martel gets slammed into the turnbuckle. Martel goes for a backdrop, but gets kicked by Koko. Back to back jumping headbutts by Koko. Martel gets back up, and then collapses backwards. Koko gets two. Koko misses the flying crossbody this time, which allows Martel to hook the Quebec Crap for the submission. Standard opener, with a nice bit of pyschology with the crossbody blocks. *1/4 WINNER: Rick Martel via Submission at 3:51 -Backstage with Mean Gene & The Colossal Connection. They say they will destroy Demolition. -In the lockerroom with Sean Mooney & Demolition. They give a weirded out Hogan-esque interview. -WWF Tag Team Championship: The Colossal Connection (w/ Bobby Heenan) vs. Demolition Demolition gets a huge pop. I love those carts that they used to bring them to the ring. They should bring them back sometime. The Colossal Connection attacks from behind before the bell. Eventually Smash & Haku start it off. Haku misses a clothesline, and allows Smash to fight back. Smash tags Ax, and Demolition does some doubleteaming on Haku. Andre comes in and gives Ax a shot. Andre with a sleeper on Ax, illegally, and Haku gets two. Headbutt by Andre. Smash comes in and makes the save. Haku with an eye poke. Haku delivers some chops to the neck, and puts Ax into a nerve hold. Haku lets go, and kicks Smash off the apron. Smash distracts the ref, which allows Andre to choke out Ax with the tag rope. Shoulderbreaker by Haku, as Jesse notes that Haku should be tagging out to Andre. Two count as Smash makes the save. Haku runs into a big boot from Ax. Clothesline by Ax. Smash gets the hot tag. Elbow by Smash. Backdrop by Smash. Crossbody by Smash, gets one. Smash goes after Andre. Ax comes in and hits a clothesline on Haku. Double clothesline on Andre. Double clothesline on Haku. Andre comes in and grabs Smash from behind. Haku misses the Crescent Kick and hits Andre, getting him tied up in the ropes. Clothesline by Smash on Haku. Hotshot on Haku. Demolition Decapitation finishes Haku. Heenan can't untie Andre in time. Huge pop for Demolition's final title win. Slow match, with Haku having to wrestle the whole match by himself. * WINNERS: Demolition via Pinfall to WIN the WWF Tag Team Championships at 9:30 -Heenan is furious with Andre after the match. Heenan makes his mistake when he slaps him. Andre clobbers Heenan. Haku tries to hit the Crescent Kick, but is caught by Andre. Andre sends him outside. Haku & Heenan try to escape in the cart, but Andre kicks them out, and rides off in his last moment of glory. -Backstage with Mean Gene, Earthquake & Jimmy Hart. Earthquake was Canadian Earthquake up until this show. -Hercules vs. Earthquake (w/ Jimmy Hart): Should be squash city here, folks. Earthquake was one of the more entertaining fat guys. Quake misses an elbow. Herc goes after Jimmy, which allows Earthquake enough time to escape to the outside. Back in, and Quake does the Earthquake stomp, which causes Herc to lose his balance. Test of stength follows. Herc starts winning, and Quake gets in a cheap shot. Quake with some shoulder thrusts into the corner. Herc makes the comeback, and hits some shoulderblocks but can't knock Quake down. He gets Quake down to one knee with a clothesline, and then sets up for the Torture Rack. Quake stomps him. Elbow drop by Quake. Another. Earthquake Splash follows. Herc is toast. This served the purpose intended. 1/2* WINNER: Earthquake via Pinfall at 4:52 -Quake hits the Aftershock after the match. Herc gets up, being the first opponent for Earthquake not to be carried out on a stretcher. -Interview Segment. Rona Barrett with Miss Elisabeth. Boring interview. This is why Elisabeth never got to talk. -In the lockerroom with Sean Mooney & Brutus Beefcake. Beefcake promises to break the Perfect Record. -Mr. Perfect (w/ The Genius) vs. Brutus Beefcake: Perfect is undefeated at this point, having made his debut in 1988. This is Beefcake's last PPV before the accident. Perfect tries to attack Beefcake from behind, but fails. Perfect does his oversell job of a punch, and goes flying to the floor. No wonder the guy had back problems. Perfect tries a backdrop, but is kicked in the head by Beefcake. Atomic drop by Beefcake, and Perfect goes flying back outside. Perfect whacks Beefcake with the scroll. Necksnap by Perfect gets two. Kick to the ribs by Perfect. Perfect works over the back. Kneelift by Perfect. Perfect stalls a lot. Perfect stalls too much allowing Beefcake to slingshot him into the post to end the winning streak. I expected a lot more out of these two. Elbow drop gets two. Piper goes to the eyes. Piper pounds on Brown in the corner. Brown goes to the eyes. Brown unties the turnbuckle pad. Brown tries to whip Piper into the exposed turnbuckle, but it backfires. Piper puts on a glove, to imitate the one Bad News has. Piper whacks Brown with the glove, sending him down. Piper repeatedly uses the glove in full view of the ref. Another right sends Brown outside. Brown drags Piper out, and the two brawl to a double count out. Bad match, with minimal wrestling. DUD WINNER: Double Count Out at 6:48 -Piper & Brown fight back to the dressing room. -In the bathroom with Steve Allen and the Bolsheviks. Funny bit with Allen mocking the Soviet National Anthem. -The Hart Foundation vs. The Bolsheviks: The Harts have challenged Demolition for a shot at the WWF Tag Titles. They would go on and win them at SummerSlam. Bret gives some kid his shades before the match. Volkoff wants to sing the Soviet National Anthem. The Harts attack from behind starting the match. Volkoff is clotheslined outside by Neidhart. Hart Attack on Zukhov ends it. Well, that was quick. DUD WINNERS: The Hart Foundation via Pinfall at 0:19 -Promo for Wrestlemania VII at the Los Angelas Coliseum. Heh heh heh. -Backstage with Mean Gene & Tito Santana. Tito's Wrestlemania losing streak stands at 4. His only win came against the Executioner at Wrestlemania I. -The Barbarian (w/ Bobby Heenan) vs. Tito Santana: Barbarian was just sold to Heenan by Mr. Fuji as he wanted to spend more time with the Orient Express. Warlord ended up with Slick, and the Powers of Pain were no more. Sniff. They lock up, and Barbarian just shoves Santana off. Santana works over Barbarian in the corner. He makes fun of them, and Honky is actually quite polite about it. -Dino Bravo (w/ Jimmy Hart & Earthquake) vs. Jim Duggan: Duggan carries a US flag to ring. Roberts stole the Million Dollar Belt on Superstars in the winter, and Dibiase wants it back. -Backstage with Mean Gene & Jake Roberts. -Million Dollar Championship: Jake Roberts vs. Ted Dibiase (w/ Virgil): Since the Million Dollar Belt is not a recognized title, it can change hands on a count out or disqualification. Front facelock by Dibiase, as the crowd starts the wave. Roberts is tossed outside. Dibiase rams Roberts into the post. The crowd is going crazy. You can barely hear the announcers. Roberts is tossed back inside. Jesse, of course, thinks that the crowd is on their feet for Dibiase. Piledriver by Dibiase. Roberts hits the DDT on Dibiase. Roberts gives away Dibiase's money to the fans at ringside. Jake still has one bill left, which he shoves in Dibiase's mouth. Roberts gets Damien, but Virgil comes out to rescue Dibiase. Roberts chases Virgil to the back with Damien. Dibiase has disappeared. -In the lockerroom with Sean Mooney, Akeem & the Doctor of Style Slick. Slick never fails to entertain. Akeem has to be one of the better bad gimmicks. Like Repo Man & Double J. He just plays the part so well. -Backstage with Mean Gene & Big Bossman. Bossman says he is proud to be an American. Not a good way to get over with this crowd. -Akeem (w/ Slick) vs. Big Bossman: This is the blowoff for the Twin Towers breakup. Slick tried to sell Bossman to Dibiase, so that Dibiase could get back the Million Dollar Belt from Jake Roberts. But Bossman was an honest cop and refused. It wasn't bad, but it was too short to be of any value. DUD WINNER: Big Bossman via Pinfall at 1:49 -Bossman beats up Slick after the match. See, bribery is wrong, but assault is ok. -In the crowd with Sean Mooney. He gets some thoughts on the Honky Tonk Man. Honky isn't too popular with the crowd. Mooney talks to Mary Tyler Moore in the audience. It is quite obvious that she is not a wrestling fan. -Rythm & Blues come to ring in a pink cadillac, along with Jimmy Hart, Diamond Dallas Page & The Honkettes. Jimmy is carrying a gold album for a single that hasn't even been released yet. They debut Honky's new single, Honka Honka Honka Honky Love. They do a pretty crappy job, but since that is a part of the gimmick, I can live with it. The Bushwhackers are handing out programs at ringside. They chase Rythm & Blues off to get revenge for a guitar shot. The Bushwhackers destroy Honky's guitars. -Yet another Wrestlemania VII promo. Sure, Vince. I believe it will outdraw Wrestlemania III. -Howard Finkel announces that a new SkyDome attendance record has been set. 67,678 people are in attendance. -Rick Rude (w/ Bobby Heenan) vs. Jimmy Snuka: Steve Allen joins in on commentary for the match. Since Rude is being prepped for a feud over the WWF Title, who wins this match isn't exactly in doubt. Allen likes Rude. I thought celebrities were supposed to be faces, at least until Pete Rose came along. Rude attacks Snuka from behind. Rude misses a dropkick. Snuka launches Rude into the air. Backdrop by Snuka. Headbutt by Snuka. Snuka dropkicks Rude outside. Rude tries a sunset flip, but is stopped with a shot to the head. Snuka puts his head down, and Rude capitalizes with a vertical suplex. Backdrop by Rude. Rude puts his head down, allowing Snuka to hit a faceplant. Rude goes to the eyes. Shoulderblock by Rude. Criss cross leads to a Snuka running headbutt. Snuka goes for the Superfly Splash, but takes too long and Rude is able to get back up. Bodyslam by Snuka. Snuka goes to the second turnbuckle and misses a diving headbutt. Rude Awakening finishes him. This was energetic, and otherwise ok. ** WINNER: Rick Rude via Pinfall at 3:59 -Clips of the Warrior/Hogan feud. Captivating stuff back in the day. -WWF Title vs. Intercontinental Title: Hulk Hogan vs. Ultimate Warrior: Winner gets both titles. This is perhaps the biggest dream match in the history of professional wrestling. Hogan is basically the cocky WWF Champion, where as Warrior is the next big thing. Hogan & Warrior get into a shoving match to start. Test of strength. Warrior gets Hogan to his knees. Hogan fights his way back, and gets the Warrior down. Warrior fights back as well, and Hogan cheats to get Warrior down for two. Shoulderblock by Hogan, but nobody moves. Criss cross, followed with a scoop slam by Hogan which Warrior doesn't sell. Scoop slam by Warrior, and Hogan is hurt. Warrior clotheslines Hogan out of the ring. Hogan hurt his knee on the way outside. Warrior comes outside, and kicks Hogan's leg. Warrior gets back in. Hogan is out on the floor. Warrior comes back out, shoves the ref and tosses Hogan in the ring. Warrior continues going after the knee. Hogan goes to the eyes, and starts choking out Warrior. Hogan is having no affect on Warrior. Clothesline by Warrior. Another. A third, and Warrior backs Hogan up in the corner. Snap suplex by Warrior for two. Bearhug by Warrior. Hogan's arm goes down twice, but stays up the third time. Hogan fights his way out of the bearhug. Warrior accidently takes out Hebner. Warrior hits a flying axehandle, and a second. Warrior misses the shoulder tackle, and gets planted on the mat. Hogan has it won, but there is no ref. Warrior is back up, and gets a belly to back suplex. Still no referee. Hebner gets up, but Warrior only gets two. Hogan goes to the eyes, and gets a school boy for two. Elbow by Hogan sends Warrior to the floor. Hogan goes outside and they brawl on the floor. Warrior rams Hogan into the post. Back in, and Warrior hits a clothesline. Warrior gets the Gorilla Press Slam, and the Big Splash, but Hogan kicks out. Hulk Up. Big Boot by Hogan, but he misses the Atomic Leg Drop. Big Splash by Warrior for three, and Hogan's one clean loss in the WWF. Great drama. Not a spectacular match, but a very good one. ***1/2 WINNER: Ultimate Warrior via Pinfall to WIN the WWF Championship at 22:51 -Hebner screws up and offers Warrior both titles. Warrior only takes the IC Title, as Hebner sneaks off camera so that Hogan can do his thing. Hogan gives Warrior the WWF Belt, raises his hand, and rides off, leaving Warrior to a huge ovation. An epic end to a show of this magnitude. -BOTTOM LINE: This is very much a thumbs in the middle type of show. The first few matches are crap, but it picks up a bit after that. However, given the epic feel of the show, the great crowd, and the importance of the main event, and given the fact that I refuse to give a thumbs in the middle to anything, I will give this show a mild recommendation. Thumbs up.
Guest Tony149 Report post Posted February 10, 2002 Once again, a good review. The opening package of WrestleMania VI has a scorpion (Sting) and a horse (4 Horsemen) shown during the whole "gods" thing. I always wondered if that was some jab at WCW.
