How do you put smileys in signatures?

I'm trying to put the machine gun smiley ()in my sig by typing it out (i.e. "firing" with colons around it instead of quotes), but it just comes up as text. Help?

Useful to know? Yeah, sure. Brilliant? That would mean approx. half of the people on just about any message board would be smart for being able to tell you the same thing.
