How you didn't make your wrestler

Recommended Posts

Guest Edwin MacPhisto

I was leafing through some of my old ML stuff when I remembered how difficult a time I had coming up with a character for this e-fed business.  Looking back, I think it took me about 2 weeks before I was comfortable with trying out Edwin MacPhisto, and even then I made some changes right off the bat.  I'd had lots of weird ideas about what sort of character I should make.  Did you?

I'll get the ball rolling: the first character I thought of when I decided I wanted to join was a deranged heel who did stuff like superplex people to the outside or hit them with release brainbusters from the apron to the concrete to win by count-out.

Needless to say, I'm really, really glad I was smart enough to let that sucky idea die, and die hard.

So, what were your alternates?  Other ideas?  What characters has the IGN/SWF never seen because you decided to be HVT, ELM, KoH, or whoever you might be?

Oi, well I just wish I didn't use Midget... *involuntary shudder* but I was going to use the heel IL a lot sooner, but without this Plague crap I'm toying with.

Maybe I'm not the best example... :)

But it took me a little while to write some comfortable stats for JD... not quite two weeks.

I almost had a rotating series of alter egos a la a much more annoying and less entertaining Great Muta.

Yeah, THAT would have gotten approved.

Mistress Sarah was always the persona I had in mind.  I play the persona in real life all the time.  (I have minions.)  The only other two personas I've wanted to try were Sekhmet (which I did try and everyone hated) and Tomcat ([yes, that was me] which I did try and couldn't continue once I came back to the WF).

So there.

I was the Amazing Hawk, a fast paced daredevil who would get himself in lots of trouble by jumping whenever he can, before I settled on and just scrapped nicknames and went with my real name. Last name's fake, however. I'm not that stupid.....

:P

Thank god I never picked that Hawk character. OooO, rejoice for Erek.

Before i joined i was thinking of doing some sort of fire guy character, complete with fire-related puns for his moves. But the show before i debuted Inferno came along with the exact same gimmick, so i changed mine and here i am. Very happy i went the way i did.

And after i left the JL for a while, i was going to come back with a new character just so i could beat up the lower card individuals for some more wins and win the TV and Euro Titles again. But i decided against it and just came back as Stryke.

Good thing the last name's fake, Erek, or we'd have a JL world champion named Erek Dorkpowski.

BUUUUUUUURN!

::realizes it's past midnight::

MIDNIGHT BUUUUUURN!

One, two, three Strykes, you're out!  God, I kill me sometimes.

I was always Mafia, except at one time I had the name of Tommy Gunn tacked on.

Despite that horrible pun of a name, I tried to portray a Raven or Jake Roberts character, complete with the mind games and long, drawn out speeches. I sucked at that, and nothing fit together. So I eventually dropped the Tommy Gunn part of the name, and developed the schizophrenic paranoid heel that ended up being my longest running gimmick. That is, until now, when I decided to bring in other aspects.

You see, I would tell you about the other character I thought up, but maybe I'll want to bring him in one day and not let y'all know he's me.  :)

From the very beginning, I wanted a character that ripped off EVERYTHING from Iori Yagami.  The exact same hair, face, pants (strap-pants), catchphrases (Suguraku ni shiiteyaru... Iori says it too), and moves (Riot of the Blood is not only a Cradle Tombstone Piledriver, it's when Iori goes insane and eats people!  Scum Gale is a move of his, too)  I thought that a lot of people would call me on it, that I was just a ripoff of a video game character.

It's been a year.  No one has caught on, even when I tell them.

I think things are just fine.

I've gone through so alot of gimmicks, and styles, and I've never settled on one. I'll probably be doomed switching between Sacred's 27 alter ego's.

I liked my first gimmick though, always demanding respect and all.

I've had Low Brass ready for a long time.  No other characters came to mind, though Low Brass did become SLIGHTLY more serious over time.  But generally, Brass has been the same all around, aside from losing the Lucky Charms.  I need to bring those back whenever it may be that I return.

Maybe I should kill somebody and steal their persona.

Uh... I won't even mention who I debuted as, for that'd be a life-threatening shudder.

Other than that, I thought of a priest with that rich southern accent... except he'd be a satan worshipper and always wave around goatheads =P

Then there was Ebola, who I actually became... a total failure. He was a very tough sadistic heel... with a crappy writer whose matches were only worthy of the lowercard =P Maybe I could give it another run and write him correctly this time... but I don't think so.

Ebola used a lot of suplex and brainbuster powermoves, sleeper holds, and really hard HHH-type punches. He wore a dirty green jacket and came out to "Closer" by NIN. Now I'd probably make him face and he'd come out to the more obvious "Down with the sickness" by Disturbed.

PROMO (Stubby P. McWeed);

"Obviously the Stubby character has evolved since I started.

At first he was just a goofy hippy.  Basically just a rip-off of Dude Love more or less.  Then he evolved into an anti-social madman, and finally into sensible, smart and yet somewhat arrogant commish.

I think the character is definitely at his most realistic and believable right now.

Oh, and of course we also had Simon Flare in there too.  I also seriously considered doing a character named "Blood" instead of Simon Flare when I returned in the ML.

Mothernature says, so now you know..."

I've actually used the Superior One gimmick in most of the fantasy wrestling stuff I've done. I've used a bunch of different finishers, depending on the Wrestling Style Du Jour: the Mandate of Heaven bow-and-arrow, the Bow Down To Glory top-rope power bomb, the Tomstone Piledriver, the Buffalo Chickenwing....

If you hadn't gathered, I also had a thing for cheesy move names and horrible puns.

I also had an aborted stint as The Enlightened One, which was a Tibetan Buddhist gimmick featuring a top-rope Liger Bomb that I called the Diamond Dawn. It sounded really stupid to anyone who hasn't studied Tibetan Buddhism (read, most of the world), and so that didn't get over.

Guest Xstasy

I was going to use Exodus the Son as my first character.  My first ever CAW was a character called The Messiah that was more or less Exodus.  When I found out there was already a Messiah, I scrapped that idea.  Then I was gonna make a heel version of Xstasy and see how quickly it took him to become a face.

Believe it or not, I was also going to make what was then the H-Ville Thugg.  That character has been a joke between the real HVT and I for years.  It came from an unstoppable monster CAW that I created called Armageddon.  That idea morphed into HVT, who actually wasn't ghetto at all in his prototype version, but was a big metallic monster.  But I decided I would rather do extreme spots than lumbering moves.  I never expected HVT to actually use it in the E-Fed, I thought he was going to use another character he created called Colassus, who was HUGE and scary!!!

In the end, I decided I wanted to be the ultimate babyface.  So I chose Xstasy, to make the fans Xstatic.  Didn't succeed as much as I wanted to, but it was definately a fun ride.  I wish I had chosen to use the Thugg (Armageddon) first though.  Maybe I would have actually succeeded!!

Originally I was going to come in as this really badass red neck who flipped people off a lot named Steve Austin...

...but then one day I turned on wrestling and realized he already existed. ;)

Seriously though, originally I thought I would be a really REALLY dark character who was insane and a badass and took HUGE bumps. But then, I named him TNT, and when I was making my stats I realized that TNT would be better for a slightly dark but king of cheerful guy. I mean, does AC/DC's TNT sound like the theme song of a dark and sadistic freak to you? I thought not.

Yeah, whatever bitch (Xstasy).  Don't make it like I stole your character beeatch.  You were the one that suggested that I use HVT as my character...either him or the other one which will remain nameless as I may use him in the future....you know, one of my many real life personas..lol.

Although, yes...I must admit that Xstasy was the original creator of The HVille Thugg...although not as he is known today.  However, it was ME who mad the CAW of the metallic dude.  I made him on Smackdown 1, and he was a beast.  I don't remember, but I think it was X who called him HVT...but I'm not sure.  But the original idea of HVT was X's...you know, the one from the JL.  The big huge dude who didn't talk, but just beat the shit out of everyone.  Anyway...

As far as characters, I never really toyed with any other characters. I was reading the JL a month before I actually joined, and when I decided to join, X gave me the idea of using the HVille Thugg as my character.  At the time, the only real big man was Apostle, so I felt there was a good place for a huge monster in a fed dominated by high flyers like X and Magnifico.  At the time, HVT didn't talk at all...he was just this monster.  Slowly, over time, I gave him a persona, which at first was mostly grunts and words spoken in low volumes.  Then, I think somewhere after or during the IGNWO thing, I gave him voice and made him ghetto-fied.  Other than that, the most Ive changed was entrance music...

But too bad Xstasy...you should have used HVT when you had the chance.  But we really created him together, so don't be hoggin' my credit bitch!!  LOL....nah, I'm just playin' yo...I really don't even remember who first came up with HVille Thugg...because we've been using that running joke for what?  like 7 or 8 years, right?

Anyway....that's the history.

Guest Tod deKindes

When I first thought of Tod, I was looking at a photo of Matt Hardy (which my buddy turned into a banner later on, link to come) and thought I could do something good out of this. Then the gears started rolling in my head, and I came up with "Edge's early character, but better." He's young and angry, though he talks. He's intense, kinda prefers keeping to himself. And he kinda has the same entrance attire as him, too. :P  (my Tod CAW in No Mercy rocks, btw) And the german thing, well...german speaking is bad ass, mmkay?  :D

I only got to use him briefly once in the now defunct NEGWA, but I didn't have enough time to build the character. Hopefully I'll be able to do that here.

Here's a photo, since Geocities sucks balls when it comes to pictures in forums, just copy the link into your browser window up there and it should work.

Guest Grand Slam

"Grand Slam" Mark Stevens started life as a CAW in Smackdown 1.  I've carried him through all three Smackdowns as a matter of fact.  So, when I started thinking about making a character for he IGNJL, it was a natural, since all I had to do was mine my CAW for moves.  Heck, my original moves list was basically the moveset I used in SD.  So I wrote him up, submitted him and here we are.

I started off as a 'tweener, then went heel for the rest of my JL run by joining Anarchy.  When we were bumped, I started a slow turn that culminated about a month into my WF run when Anarchy disintigrated and I turned full-fledged face.  As the character eveolved, I got to show more sides of his personality.  My wife pointed out that he is, at least now, a really exaggerated version of me.

I have tried to be very consistent and am proud to say that since I joined, I have had:

- One turn (heel to face)

- Three Stables (FTW, Anarchy, Midnight Carnival)

- Two entrance musics (Welcome to the Jungle, Born Bad)

- Two Finishers, both of which I still use (Walk-Off, Seventh Inning Stretch)

- One Wife

- far too many tag partners to name

- and nine, count 'em nine belts.

Whoa whoa whoa WHOA! Sarah was 'Tomcat' Menias???? The one who stole Sydney Sky from Annie?

Oooooooooohhhh.... bad blood there....

heh ;)

well, let's see, anyone remember the 'Angelic' Annie E? or 'The Smooth Criminal' Annie Eclectic? I went from cocky and horny face to cocky and narcisistic heel, to bloodthirsty assassin heel.

And you know, there was other ideas. I read a lot of JL, and I had a great idea... but someone already was a dominatrix.... *cough*.

Oh... Annie may just be getting another face lift soon too. This of course depends on how long my losing streak goes. 0-3 and counting... tick tock......

Other ideas? '80's Girl' be happy for that one going nowhere.

'Smooth Criminal' had this early obsession with board game pieces. I promoed with Cluedo cards, Trivial Pursuit questions, and a 'Chance' card from Monopoly. that got killed quick. Mercifully.

If anyone is curious, 'Annie' came from the song Smooth Criminal, 'Eclectic'.. it just kinda fit.

Guest TheBostonStrangler

Well, the Boston Strangler started out as a No Mercy CAW that was VERY similar in appearance to the Undertaker, and a moveset nearly identical to Kane's. When I joined the league, I looked through my CAW list, and decided that joining as the three other CAW's I had (a Mr. T CAW, a luchadore named Rodrigo, and a 500 pounder named Tony) wasn't a great idea. Plus, I always liked the gimmick.

In retrospect, however, I wouldn't use TBS. I figured out pretty early on that I was at my best when I was a tweener or face, since I found it easier to incorporate the crowd when I was getting the pops. Plus, no matter how evil my guy was, he always seemed to do the face actions. If I could do it again, I might make someone about the Rock's size, with a face-Shamrock attitude.

Guest Longdogger_Pete

Longdogger Pete was always my first choice for the IGNJL when I signed up.  He was my most successful CAW in both Smackdown 1 and 2 (I don't have a PS2 to get SD3 yet).  However, I did consider a couple other CAWs.  I think my second choice may have been a tall and tough Test knockoff called The Tower.

And then there was the ill-fated and very short-lived LDP heel turn into "Living Darkness" Peter MacDougal, which utterly sucked because no one would book me against a face, and because I discovered I couldn't write heels very well.

In the beginning I was torn between the names Cutthroat, Blaine Kalem, and "Cutthroat" Blaine Kalem. Guess what I picked in the end...Cutthroat, I just used my real name as Cutthroat's real name. Then the next thing was his personality. Right off of the bat I wanted him to be like a Triple H or Rob Van Dam. So I picked a mix of the two. Next I was thinking if he is a power, high flying, or no selling bastard, and I picked hight flying, defanately. Finally, did the fans hate him or love him? They loved him...

Guest Perfect_Bo

Many people dont remember this but when I was having my downfall in the WF, you know, losing matches left and right, I needed some confidence, thus I went back to the JL and made a character whose name is "Anthony Brown."

It was difficult for me to make stats for him, because I am a big man, and I think big doing big harsh moves, and Brown was the total oppisite of him.  I used him and I did well, winning all three of my matches and winning the TV title.  Some people knew it was me even though I was denying it.  Although, that had to stop because I got shot...

I really didnt hate him, but he was soooo difficult to write for...  I always think big and never think like a light weight, and it was so hard for me to adapt, but I think I did fairly well with him...

That's who I made...

Before I made Bo, I was thinking of creating a guy call "Hope Faith" (I know, weird name) now, this person was a Gothic Thugg...  Big and strong like him, but Gothic, spooky and really didnt talk...  Thank god I didnt make that stupid character that didnt talk, and was about 7'2 and weigh over 400 pounds and no sell every move in the list and barely cuts Promo because he can't speak the language, he speaks gibberish..

What, no I didnt say anything bad about THUGG!!  :D ;) :)
