Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted December 17, 2003 So anyway, I've heard good things about Trout Mask Replica, and noticed it in my local decent music store today. Almost bought it, but I ended up getting more Frank Zappa. I'm pretty sure I'll end up getting the thing based on the fact that I know he's a genuine weird fucker, and I've never heard a negative thing about him. What am I in for? The Decemberists 0 Report post Posted December 17, 2003 Just get it. Seriously. It's kinda... well, it's... If you're into Zappa then you'll love it. My brother is a Zappa/Beafheart nut so i can get some proper info off him if you want it. Oh, and the producer is a certain Frank Zappa, so that should give you a good idea what it's like. Giuseppe Zangara 0 Report post Posted December 18, 2003 Trout Mask Replica is a noisy, chaotic, clanging, gorgeous mess. Herky-jerky rhythms and wildly atonal guitars chug away as Beefheart howls surreal, non-sequiter lyrics like an old bluesman. It may take awhile for it all to sink in--it's 28 songs and 78 minute running time give you a lot to digest--but it's worth it. Or you may just want to throw your stereo out the window. It's been known to provoke such a reaction.
Guest mesepher Report post Posted December 18, 2003 what FZ album did you pick up? Bongo Fury would have been a good trade off for not getting the Beefheart album
Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted December 18, 2003 I love it already and I've never heard it, based on the above. I got Lumpy Gravy, and Cheap Thrills, which I'm going to listen to directly. Oh, and the producer is a certain Frank Zappa, so that should give you a good idea what it's like Yeah, ok, I'm buying it. Giuseppe Zangara 0 Report post Posted December 18, 2003 He also sings "Willie the Pimp" on Hot Rats.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted December 18, 2003 He's on "The Torture Never Stops" on this one. I like the vocals already. Extra gravelly, with kind of a Dr. John sort of twang to it. I've got Hot Rats around here someplace, too. I'll have to check that out next. Then it's probably going to be time to go shopping.
