RavishingRickRudo 0 Report post Posted January 7, 2004 (edited) You don't have to respond to them all at once - take your time, spread it out... shit, I couldn't even finish it all... sorry for the formatting errors, for some reason it fucks up when I take it off word, I'll fix em... The Show Favourite Episode: 1. War Stories 2. Out of Gas 3. Ariel Favourite Moment: *Changes all the time* 1. The conversation between Mal and Simon at the end of "Safe". Simon: Captain... why did you come back for us? Mal: You're on my crew. Simon: You don't even like me. Why'd you come back? Mal: You're on my crew. Why're we still talking about this? It's akin to Buffy's episode "Family", where Tara get's accepted into the group. It's just a kinda feel-good moment that puts a smile on my face. Especially after his own parents disowned him and how he feels separate from his current group. 2. River's reaction to Book's hair. I love this. I have watched this scene countless times. It is absolutely amazing. *River looks* *River realizes* *River FREAKS OUT* 3. Jayne and Mal at the end of "Ariel". It's badass AND it's touching. How often do you get that? *Honourable Mention: In "Out of Gas" when the crew is sitting around the table in the beginning and around the hospital bed at the end... I love that shit down hard. Favourite Line/Lines: 1. Wash: "Everything looks good from here... (beat...playing with plastic dinosaurs over his console) Yes. Yes, this is a fertile land, and we will thrive." (as Stegosaurus) "We will rule over all this land, and we will call it... 'This Land'." (as T-Rex) "I think we should call it...your grave!" (Stegosaurus) "Ah, curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!" (T-Rex) "Ha ha HA! Mine is an evil laugh...now die!" I LOVE THIS! Every line is fucking great. I LOVE THIS!!! It's quirky and odd and it kinda tricks you and he's playing with dinosaurs dammit! 2. Jayne: Anyone remember her coming at me with a butcher knife? Wash: Wacky fun.... Jayne: You want to go, little man? Wash: Only if it's someplace with candlelight. I am SO using that whenever the opportunity arises. It's fucking GOLD. Wash and Jayne do not interact much, but when they do it's well worth the wait. 3. River: They say the snow on the roof was too heavy. The ceiling will cave in, his brains are in terrible danger! Book: River? Please. Why don't you come out? River: No! Can't! Too much hair! Zoe: River, honey, he's putting the hair away now. River: Doesn't matter. It'll still be there... waiting. Books cluelessness, Zoes enjoyment, Rivers delivery... it makes this a fucking CLASSIC. "It'll still be there...waiting" goes straight to the lexicon. Favourite Surprise/Twist Spoiler (Highlight to Read): 1. Kaylee being dead/The Prank pulled on Simon. This is what hooked me on the show. The delivery of this scene, with the slow motion, the use of book, the follow up with the crew laughing hysterically and Mal saying "I'm a bad man" makes this THE best fucking twist and says "don't trust everything you're told"...which comes in handy when watching Firefly. 2. Simon entering the abandoned ship post Reaver attack in his space suit after being scared of going into it... basically, every prank pulled on Simon is my favourite. Such a great straight man. 3. Jayne turning on Simon and River. Jayne is not a good guy. I mean, we all love him, but he's not a good guy. This reinforced that. It also completely went against it when Jayne turned around and saved them. It's up in the air. It also put Jayne in Simons good graces; and they had been battling it out the entire run of the show. Mals reaction was perfect. Favourite "Shot" 1. River standing on the railings listening to the crew decide her fate in "Objects Floating in Space". It's just really odd and fitting and beautiful and surreal. 2. Spoiler (Highlight to Read): Simon hugging River right before the Villagers are going to light them on fire. River seems oblivious and he sorta seems at peace knowing it will finally be over. I'm a mark for self-sacrifice and keeping a chin-up in the face of death so I dug the shit outta this. 3. Spoiler (Highlight to Read): The Police Officer getting shot. The build it up like this ultimate showdown and it ends up just being a quick shot to the head. Bait.... and switch! Joss fucks with you and you love it! Who doesn't love gratuitous violence? The Cast Favourite Character: 1. MAL! I've gone through the description of Mal in my undone Serenity review. I just really like the different sides of him, all of which appeal to me. Noble, Cowardly, Funny, Bitter, Sarcastic¡K you can't really find a character like him anywhere. 2. WASH! Wash is a character that should have his own show, but really shouldn't have his own show because if he was the focus of the entire show it would suck... he's better used in small doses. Such is the case in Firefly. People call him Xander-esque, and I say; Is that so bad?? 3. RIVER! It's more because of Summer Glau making the character than the character itself. I love what she does with it; the way she walks, the way she smiles, her reactions... all priceless. Favourite "Guest" Character: 1. Saffron ("Mrs. Reynolds"): she's really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, hot. Plus she totally had me played... maybe because I was focusing on something else. 2. Um, shit, I made these topics and can't even fully respond to them... Well, the more I watch the shows the more it will come to me... which is the great part of these list things - they can go on for a while 3. Favourite Villain: 1. Early: I have never seen a more well spoken, insightful, and funny villain in my life. Great performance by the actor-dude whose name I cannot recall. He kicked some ass too. PLUS the shot(s) of "the real" him were freaky and wonderful. 2. The Blue Hand Men - THEY INVADED MY DREAMS! MY GOD! BAD MEN! BAD MEN! I love the whole "Blue Sun" thing, which I really want to discuss but don't want to put all the good discussions at the start of the thread... gotta save some for later 3. The Reavers: They have yet to invade my dreams, but they still scare the piss outta me. They're kinda like the zombies in Ghosts of Mars.... infact, they're A LOT like them. Favourite Hottie (aka: The Jenny Calendar Memorial Award for Achievement in The Field of "That Funny Feelin Down In My Pants".): *With the interests of other posters here in mind, I will refrain from commenting"* 1. Inara 2. River 3. Saffron Edited January 7, 2004 by RavishingRickRudo
Anakin Flair 0 Report post Posted January 7, 2004 Well, I just got it yesterday, andfinished the first disk last night, and I just want to take a moment to thank RRR for being so passionate about this show that I just had to pick it up and give it a try. I am ashamed I didn't give it a chance when it was on the air. oh, adn Fuck Fox.
RavishingRickRudo 0 Report post Posted January 7, 2004 Don't thank me; I should be thanking you for giving the show a chance and coming on here to talk about it. I want as many people as possible watching this show - cause it deserves that. A show like this doesn't come along too often and it should be seen by anyone and everyone. We all should be thanking the show for providing such quality entertainment; and we do so by talking about it and writing lists
Mole 0 Report post Posted January 7, 2004 I am done with the second disc, and so far so great. Jayne is my favorite character by far, I just love everything about him. When I was at Suncoast today, I saw Firefly on sale for $35.99, which is pretty cheap for Suncoast standards. Me think the DVD isn't selling too well.. RavishingRickRudo 0 Report post Posted January 7, 2004 I've heard the opposite - that various stores have ran out of copies... of course, that may be because they bought a limited amount, but there is still a demand. The big problem is that NO ONE knows about it. 1 out of like 25 people will have heard of it - seriously, out of the people I have discussed this show with, ONE has actually heard of it.
Mole 0 Report post Posted January 8, 2004 None of my friends have heard of the show, then again they don't watch much TV. I am the movie/TV/wrestling geek of anyone in my town.
The Ghost of bps21 0 Report post Posted January 8, 2004 My one friend actually watched it when it aired...and loved it. Another friend just sat and watched the whole set with me over the last few days and he considers it to be the perfect TV show, just as I do. Funnily...right after "Out of Gas" he sat in his chair and turned to me and said "HOW COULD FOX TAKE THIS SHOW OFF THE AIR?!?!" That's just what I said. RavishingRickRudo 0 Report post Posted January 8, 2004 Mole, do you live in Pennsylvania Dutch Country or sumthun? I lent the set to LOTC 2 or 3 days ago and I really, really, really, really, really want it back now. I'm addicted to Firefly, and I am going through some severe withdrawl. Anakin Flair 0 Report post Posted January 8, 2004 I got it at Slackers for $30.

Where I get made fun of for watching Buffy, Angel and wrestling. Last week, I had Angel on and I was told to turn it off. I told them to fuck off or leave my house. They shortly left after. Mole 0 Report post Posted January 8, 2004 I am looking in my Entertainment Weekly where they had the ratings list of the 2002-2003 season and I don't blame Fox for canceling the show. Granted, the show was in the wrong time slot and had episodes in the wrong order, but it was the lowest rated Fox show with a 4.4 ranked 129 out of 159. If Firefly were on WB or UPN, then that would be considered a high rating, but not for Fox.
The Ghost of bps21 0 Report post Posted January 8, 2004 Hmm... put it on Fridays where you cancel every show...give it no publicity...air the episodes out of order... Yes...let's praise Fox. ... Fuck Fox.

RavishingRickRudo 0 Report post Posted January 8, 2004 And fuck Fox - they thought Firefly was a fucking comedy.
Mole 0 Report post Posted January 8, 2004 It was more like they wanted it to be a comedy, probably because they know how funny Buffy can be at times.
RavishingRickRudo 0 Report post Posted January 8, 2004 Or they just see the word "Buffy" and expect it to be a comedy... Joss has highlighted this in his commentaries where some executives "got" it, while other's didn't. Fox was expecting one thing and he gave them another; they couldn't get behind it.
Mole 0 Report post Posted January 8, 2004 I have yet to watch any of the commentaries, I do know there are tons of them though.
Mole 0 Report post Posted January 9, 2004 Well, you're right about the FireFly sales RRR. This is from Entertainment Weekly about TV to DVD sales: "and sales of Fox's short-lived FireFly have prompted creator Joss Whedon to mull a feature film." Basically, it looked like the DVDs have sold well, so that is good.
Guest El Satanico Report post Posted January 9, 2004 I was watching this show when it was airing on Fox. Despite Fox airing the episodes in a half assed manner so that the overall show made little sense, I could see it for the quality show it was. I don't believe I saw all 11 episodes that were aired. It was obvious that Fox had zero faith in the show and that it wouldn't survive, so I didn't bother watching it out after 4 or 5 episodes.
RavishingRickRudo 0 Report post Posted January 10, 2004 (edited) Favourite "Hat Trick" / "in-joke" 1. The Blue Hand Men/The Gentlemen from "Hush" - very similar. Both are eerie as hell, both wear suits, both have the same expression on their face (not the same as each others, but rather, a consistent expression) and River does a nursery rhyme-esque rant about them whereas the Gentlemen were from a *gasp* nursery rhyme 2. D'Hofferyn! He played the "commander"/"captain" on the first episode. He was also in Angel as the doctor who could detatch limbs. I'm more of a D'Hofferyn mark than the freaky-dude or the captain, which is why this is #2! 3. HOLDEN! YEAH! KNOX~! NO! TRACEY~! YEAH!! 2/3 AIN'T BAD! YEAH! Great performance by "Holdenoxey", and I enjoyed his death very much. His turn was swift, if puzzling in that Book couldn't just say "kid, this is what we're going to do..." rather than just look at Mal and Mal back him, and I liked the Kaylee dynamic. Favourite Relationship: I want to point out how much I LOVE the way that they have *9* characters on the show and manage to have a relationship of some sort between almost every single one of them. 1. Jayne and Book - it's really an unspoken and unlikely relationship on the show; they just work out together... and it's actually not homoerotic... it's a really neat lil buddyship they got goin and I smile every time they're in a scene together. *Jayne see's lesbian kiss* *book struggles to get bar up* You have to wonder if it's because Book was once a fighter himself (?) - and maybe Jayne see's that in him and Book see's it in Jayne - which is why the relationship may not be as unlikely as it seems. 2. Mal and Jayne - Jayne is the muscle, he could probably kill Mal if they ever fought, yet Mal still scares the shit out of Jayne. You see it every time Mal gives Jayne an order - to tell him to get up from the table, to tell him to back off, to threaten him with a horrific death... ok, maybe that last one had just cause for fear... but there's still this over-powering presence about Mal which Jayne becomes subservient to. It's sorta the same way with Zoe, so it might be a military thing, but I think it's something more. I also think it's more than money, as well. Various members of the crew are attracted to Mal - for one reason or another - and I think a big reason for that is his leadership - or "fatherly" - quality. I think that may be why Jayne stays with him. River sort of hinted at Jayne having a "troubled" up bringing, never getting that Christmas toy he wanted but instead getting a piece of coal (Ariel, after getting caught by the cops); Mal is somewhat of a provider for Jayne, he keeps Jayne grounded, gives him direction, as well as his own place to sleep. Jayne is a follower, though he probably sees himself as a leader. 3. Simon and Jayne and River - Ok, this is a 3 way, and it's based on 2 scenes... "It was the best day ever" and "And I can kill you with my brain". River freaks Jayne out, Simon is disgusted and often baffled by Jayne, Jayne generally hates Simon on account of his proper upbringing, and Simon loves River... I love the way Simon and River "look around" a lot. Their eyes are always moving, really enforcing the "fish out of water" scenario, whereas Jayne, Mal, Zoe tend to be more focused. Simon and River are probably the "Xander" of the show, they are our "in" into this world. The DVD Favourite Disk 1. DISK 3 - I rewatched "Trash" the other day and it rose up the ranks, and totally fills-out the disk. Ariel might have beaten "War Stories" in terms of favourite episode. Nathan and Alan do a great job on commentary here and the commentary for "Out of Gas" is almost as good as the episode itself as it gives insight on how things were captured and developed. 2. Disk 1: I love Serenity, Bushwhacked creeps me out and is also very well done, and The Train Job is a really good show that tends to get lost in the shuffle. The Commentary for Serenity and Train Job are both well done with Joss doing double-duty. I had hoped for more inspiration and plans-for-the-future from Joss in his commentary for Serenity as I really wanted to know the direction the show would have gone and developments in the series. I guess we did get that with "Blue Sun" - which was pretty huge - but I expected more. Still, awesome stuff. The Train Job commentary really lets you "in" on the creative process and dealing with Fox. 3. Disk 4 - mainly on the strength of "Objects in Space" - both the episode and the wonderful commentary by Joss. The bonus features at WAAAAAY too short for my likings (c'mon! there had to be more deleted scenes and outtakes!!!) but all of them (cept for "Joss goes around ship") were fun to watch. Favourite Featurette (Disk 4): 1. Here's how it was - it gives you a great look into the development of the show; I'd almost show this to anyone "new" to the show before the pilot - but it gives away some spoilers, so I probably wouldn't. 2. Gag Reel - ARGH! TOO SHORT! Mal and Zoe wearing the 'staches alone makes this worth mentioning. Then, of course, there's the ending ass shot... BRILLIANT! 3. Deleted Scenes - in particular, the one where Zoe talks about the war to Simon. It gives some insight as to what happened in that war and the name "serenity" - even if they changed it up a lil bit. Favourite Commentary: *will probably change on further viewing* 1. Alan and Nathan "War Stories" - they just had so much fun together talking about the show and the "relationship" between River and Simon. Some really fucking funny stuff here. It doesn't age all _that_ well as it wasn't as good as I remembered (of course, I remembered it as "best thing ever!" so...) 2. Joss "Objects.." - He spent a lot of time crafting this episode and his commentary definitely showed that. I really enjoyed this on many levels, I have to listen to it again... 3. Joss and Nathan "Serenity" - another one I have to listen again to. Though I mentioned above that it didn't have "enough" said about the future of the show, it still had a lot of neat lil tidbits and I loved every second of it. Favourite "Never Aired" Episode 1. Trash - a top episode for sure, maybe into my top 5, "well, that went well" was great along with the ~ass shots~ and Mal hanging out in all his glory! Saffron IS hot! River CAN kill you with her mind! 2. The Message - I liked it, and I'll probably like it more when watching it again, but this was one of the episodes that after I watched it - waited - and it didn't "last" with me as say, War Stories did. 3. Heart of Gold - the same can be said for this; it probably gets the distinction of being "the worst of the bunch" when infact it's still a really good episode with a big character development with Mal and Inara. The whore getting down on her knees was a particularly haunting image. Favourite Cover-art 1. BOOK! 2. JAYNE! 3. MAL! Anakin Flair 0 Report post Posted January 11, 2004 Ok, I'll post my thoughts on the series when I finish it up tomorrow and Monday (gotta work), but Rudo, when you talk about "Blue Sun", are you talking about the Blue hand guys, or an episode that was going to be made? Also, what is it with Joss and lesbians?

The Ghost of bps21 0 Report post Posted January 11, 2004 Blue Sun is the major corporation/government that runs everything. Throughout the show you'll see billboards and ads for Blue Sun...but the series didn't last long enough for them to get into it.
RavishingRickRudo 0 Report post Posted January 11, 2004 Oooooh, funny you ask about Blue Sun Yeah, Blue Sun is the uber-corporation - they're so big that they've basically merged with the Government. It's actually a pretty accurate view of the future given the current political and economic climate. Blue Sun is everywhere and is everything, practically. When River cuts into Jayne he is wearing a Blue Sun T-shirt. When she is going crazy in the kitchen ripping all the labels off the foodcans she's doing it because they're Blue Sun manufactured. What they wanted with River is unknown, though there are hints that she might have been used as a weapon.
Hank Kingsley 0 Report post Posted January 13, 2004 GREAT NEWS!!!! Fan site Fireflymovie.com received an update from Chris Buchanan, president of Joss Whedon’s production company Mutant Enemy, about the possible big screen Firefly movie. "We are getting pretty close on the movie and hopefully we’ll have some "official" news soon. It seems that the DVDs are doing really well (e.g. better than Fox anticipated) and that there have been significant re-orders (an unusual thing for this type of program). Of course, we weren’t that surprised but what can you do... Universal seems to be willing to make the movie (crossing fingers, touching wood, lighting candles), but we still have a few (non-creative) hurdles to cross. Stay tuned for more news on the movie.
