What old-school wwf videos are best to buy

Recommended Posts

Guest RickyB

I've never been enough of a fan of the WWF to buy any videos (other than Wrestlemania 6 (Hogan-Warrior)) but if any other videos, which ones should I buy?  I was thinking of buying WM 1 (due to the History of that event) then I changed my mind and decided on WM 3 (Hogan-Andre).  But then I couldn't work out which one to get.  If I had the patiance i'd order some older ones from World Class and the AWA or WCW mid-90's off the net - but I don't.  So which one do you think is best to get.

Royal Rumble..

1990, 1992 & 1994 If you're a fan of the Royal Rumble gimmick.

Wrestlemania..

III -- a must for any wrestling fan

V -- Very entertaining

VII -- Many people dislike this WrestleMania but it's one of my favourites

VIII -- My favourite Wrestlemania. A few great matches with a huge crowd and great commentary from Monsoon/Heenan.

X -- Opening match (Bret vs. Owen) is must-see.

SummerSlam..

All of them except 1988 and 1996 are great. 1996 does have a good main event though (Vader vs. Shawn Michaels), but the rest of the card is junk.

Survivor Series..

All are pretty weak except 1987, 1995, 1996 and maybe 1994. 1996 is the best Survivor Series PPV by far.

Mark4Steamboat I totally agree with you,I love those two WWF WrestleMania,I think WWF WrestleMania VIII might be my favorite WWF WrestleMania if not WWF PPV of all time and it was also the first WWF PPV I ever ordered.

Thanks.

The Crowd at VIII made it spectacular along with some amazing action. The whole storyline at VII with Slaughter and Hogan was very cool and i liked it although many "smarks" bash it all the time. The Warrior/ Savage match was also amazing.

VII gets bashed b/c of the blindfold match but im not even going to comment on that.

Alright, since I own so many old commerical WWF videos, I suppose I should chime in here. But before that I just wanna challenge some of the things dreamer said a little earlier in the thread (just my personal opinions).

royal rumble

get: 90, 92

avoid: 89 (big john studd, ugh), 93 (yokozuna and giant gonzalez (double ugh)

Definately agree with you on your get list. RR 92 is by far the most entertaining Rumble ever IMO and RR 90 isn't far behind, as it offers one of the better Rumble matches to ever take place. I have to disagree with you on the 89 Rumble though, because I think it's a pretty solid show. Now the Coliseum Video version, makes it a little less pleasing, since they cut out a really good Harley Race/Haku match. However the 2 out of 3 falls 6 man as the opener is good and fun and I personally like the Rumble match, as it shows the first real dissension in the ranks of the Megapowers. The crowd is alive until the end when Hogan is eliminated. Still, kind of enjoyable to see someone like Studd win the thing, as it just proved that the favorite doesn't always win. At least that's how it used to be.

wrestlemania

get: 3, 4, 5, 7, 10

avoid: 1 (craptacular), 2, 9, 12

Once again I agree with all of your choices on the get list, but I think you should have added 8. I'm glad to see 4 on their though, as I've always like the show, despite it being despised by most.

I wouldn't avoid the first Mania though, because although it is pretty uneventful, it is good for history reasons, not to mention the fact that the crowd is super hot and that always makes the show more enjoyable. Also remember that it was probably the "greatest show" by the standards of the time. The rest are definate passes, even 12, cause unlike most, I hate the Iron-Man match.

king of the ring

get: 93, 94, 98

avoid: 95 (at all costs), 96, 97

Not much of an arguement here, although '96 may be worth the rental simply to see the birth of Austin 3:16.

summerslam

get: 88, 89, 92, 94, 98

avoid: 91, 95

I agree with you for the most part, although I don't really see why you would throw 88 out there, as the show is pretty terrible. If you said to get it for history purposes, then it wouldn't be logical to have said to avoid WM I. I think the show is crap with the exception of the opener.

I don't know how others feel, but SS 91 was my favorite one for a while and it's still one of them. It was the first PPV I ever got to order and it's a very crowd pleasing show, with the faces going over for the most part and markout moments are scattered through the whole show. Virgil winning the Million Dollar title was great when it happened, Bret winning his first singles title is a great moment and Heenan appearing with the NWA title is one of those shocking moments in wrestling history. Add in the fact that you got Gorill and Heenan with Piper on commentary and this show is definately one of the better SS's.

survivor series

get: 87, 88, 89, 90, 91, 98

avoid: 93, 95, 96, 97

Here is where I disagree with you the most. How can you recommend 88, 98 and to a lesser extent 90 and 91? 90 had Taker's debut I understand, but it isn't anything special aside from that. I like all of the ones you picked, but if I was gonna recommend those, I wouldn't say to avoid 93 and 96, two very good shows. 93 has it's moments and from a wrestling standpoint, 96 is the best SS ever. 88 has the big 20 man tag team match, but aside from that, the show blows. 89 has bad wrestling, but I like it because it was the first wrestling tape I ever saw, so I'm biased. Anyway I'm done with that, so now I'll throw in some suggestions.

Get: Best of the WWF Volume 6, 11, 13, 15, 19, 20 (those are the best of the bunch, the rest are ok or awful)

Hart Foundation

Ricky Steamboat

British Bulldogs

Macho Madness (only if you don't mind seeing Savage/Dibiase 835 times)

Hulkamania 3

Supertape 2,4

Wrestlefest 94

Most Embarassing Moments

Bret Hart

Shawn Michaels: Hits from the HBK Express

Rampage 91

That's all I can think of for now, but keep in mind that just about anything from 85-90 is at least ok.

Avoid: Best of the WWF Volume 4, 8, 12, 14, 16, 17, 18 (8, 12 and 16 are almost depressing to watch. 17 and 18 are just a lot of nothing.)

Wrestlefest 88, 92

Just about anything that was a compilation from 1990 to about 1994. There are some good ones here and there, but most are just 2 hours of dark matches and bad ones at that. Hope I helped a little bit.

I have this tape and its ok. Bret/ Davey is gold but Bret/ Yankem is well...not. The 6 man match isnt bad but Goldust/ Razor is awful. And Yoko/ Diesel is a MAIN EVENT FROM A HOUSE SHOW and goes about 2 minutes.

If you have a buttload of cash you should hunt down the WM boxset.  1-15 in one box.  Unfortunately, it's just a tad on the expensive side.  My local Music World has it for $160.  Not for the financially challenged.

Thanks, guys.  I'm going to make a list of the best ones to get and hunt some of them down (the UK isn't the best place to look for Wrestling vids).  If you can think of any more then tell me.

I have the original Coliseum Video of this and the whole show seems lacking.  The opener is a great match, but I hate the woman's match and the super posedown.  The actual Rumble isn't too bad up until all the big names get tossed and we are left with Big John Studd to clean up.  If the Million Dollar Man would have won the Rumble it could have been a whole different story.

I like Survivor Series '95, because Bret-Diesel was pretty good, and I loved the Wild Card elimination match.  I thought that was a great idea that the WWF should have brought back.

I'd also recommend the "Smack 'Em, Whack 'Em" video, because it has some great footage of Bret Hart winning the World Title for the first time, and some of his early matches defending it.

I did buy the box set 1-14 for like 170 bucks.  I spent all my birthday and xmas money on it and my parents seemed mad.

but I would not buy it even if you have the cash, at least untill a dvd set comes out.

and dont buy the wwf hv versions individually either.  althoght they dont clip the matches,

the tape quality is crap (ep mode) especially my copy of wm 7.  my ppv masters of 13 and 14 are much better then the ones in the set. and thank god i have the coliseum of wm 10

and also they somehow got wm 4 down to 3:36 without clipping matches, however they clipped a couple of interviews and robin leech introducing the tournament (which prob is a good thing) but on wm 6 they cut out the demos interview after savages post match rant and go straight to hogan/warrior WEIRD.

but at least on wm 7, they show the instant replay segment which is funny as hell (thanks to vince playing it straight)

coliseum of wm 7 has an exclusive interview with savage and liz after the match, but they clip the bulldog/warlord match (prob a good idea)

anyways i think ss 89, 92 are pretty good

summerslam 89 is ok, 90 was so-so, 91 was good

On the WWF WrestleMania XIV WWF Home Video version of the event they show the Steve Austin and Mike Tyson post match press conference and Mike Tyson called Steve Austin "Cold Stone."It was hilarious!!!If you could find that one I recommend you get it because the show is good and the post match press conference is hilarious.

Thanks.

I don't like the editing of Wrestlemania 4 either.  The editing of the Ricky Steamboat interview pissed me off.

I never really thought WWF WrestleMania IV was a good PPV. It becomes boring after a while,I mean the tournament kind of over took the whole show.

Thanks.

Invasion 92 is a must it has Hart vs Flair for the WWf IC title plus it has Flair wearing the Big Gold Belt which Lord Alfred Hayes calls "The Outlaw Belt", that match went a good 18 minutes with a countout finish.

Also Flair vs Shawn Michaels as a Rocker, that match was average and went about 10 minutes. This match features the begining of the Rocker split, Marty was somewhat responsible for the loss to Flair.

Plus the Star Trek theme of the tape is funny!!!!!!  Mooney as the captian and Lord Alfred Hayes as Scotty.

If you're having trouble finding them you can get them online from www.silvervision.co.uk. They stock all WWF stuff.
