Best horror movie series

Recommended Posts

Guest El Satanico

I agree with Nightmare on Elm Street. I enjoyed just about all the movies in the series. The only one i didn't like was part two. I didn't care for part two because it didn't tell us more of the story and was basically just "hey lets just have Freddy kill alot of kids" with little story.

I liked all the others because they combined Freddie's history with the clever kill scenes and Fred's great one liners that the movies are known for.

I'm going to have to go old school and give it to Friday the 13th. I like the idea of an unstoppable monster walking around killing everyone in sight with no motive or reasoning. Plus, F13 was the first real "horror series" and was the catalyst for future series (like Nightmare on Elm Street). I also think that Jason looks very cool, hockey masks rule!

I like the Nightmare series as well, but they got too comedic after part 3. Part 4 and on were PG-13 horror comedies, which I wasn't crazy about. The closest an F13 movie got to being a comedy was Part 6 with it's subtle humour.

Other horror series I like include Halloween, Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Slumber Party Massacre (T&A baby). My second favourite after F13 would be the Maniac Cop trilogy. Matt Cordell kicks ass!

In terms of plot and storytelling, Freddy has it hands down. Little by little each movie would tell little bits of his background, even part two had a line about how he'd kill the kids in a boiler room.

Friday the 13th comes close though as each movie began to have more creative ways to kill the people. Does anyone know the reason behind the shock ending to parts four and five?  I heard it yesterday and it made sense.

The Sleepaway Camp trilogy (soon to no longer be a trilogy, as part 4 is in production!)

Freaky storyline, campy fun, and one of the first non invincible homicidal maniacs in horror.  For those of you who haven't seen any, buy or rent part 1, and be prepared to get freaked.

I like the Scream series a lot.  I'm not sure if this counts since it is a trilogy but they are the best three horror films ever made.

I wouldn't really call Scream a "Horror" movie. It just doesn't have the same effect as the F13 or Nightmare series. While I enjoyed the Scream series, they had a more fun/scary atmosphere than a 'holy shit, I can't watch' aura that Horror movies of the 80s had. Seriously grotesque villains helped alot.

My pic: Nightmare of Elm street. To this day, it's the only franchise that scares me.

I'll agree Scream was a good movie but it's one those movies that isn't that good to watch after seeing it already. Even though i don't consider it a "horror movie" it did have horror elements.

But how in the hell can Scream 2 and 3 be considered great horror movies or even good movies overall? They were terrible movies that didn't even have a small amount of horror like the first movie had.

There is no way that the Scream trilogy could be considered the "three greatest horror movies ever" it's a insult to all horror movie fans. If you think that is true then you must not be a horror fan. However if you do call yourself a horror movie fan, then you must turn in your membership card for making such a claim.

One of the things that takes away from the Scream movies is they turn out being murder mysteries as opposed to gorey horror. Fun movies, but Ghostface is freddy's bitch.

See look how easy it is to pull out three horror movies that are easily superior to the Scream trilogy.

I was judging by the title of the thread I guess.  You know where is says best horror movie series?  I made my pick based on which horror series is consistant with the filmmaking, casting, and scares.

Halloween is a good movie.  Everything after that with the exception of H2O sucks dick.  I don't count that as a good horror series.

Nightmare on Elm Street is my honorable mention, simply because it wasn't the exact same formula in every film, and because the NOES series displayed good filmmaking all the way through the series.

It is easy to pick three horror films that are better than the Scream trilogy, but can you pick a series of horror films (3 or more) based around the same characters that is better than the Scream trilogy.  I don't think so.

swan, were we cloned or something? We share lots of the same views...

The Phantasm series is by far my favorite. Sure, Phantasm III: Lord Of The Dead is a little weak, but it's a bridge between Phantasm II and OblIVion (note: the IV is capitalized because it is a Roman numeral on the box). And I heard part 5 is currently in production, and Bruce Campbell has a role in it...that alone will make it a must-see.

THE TALL MAN = RATINGS

Yeah you would have a point IF you called it "the greatest horror TRILOGY". However you didn't say that you said that they are the "3 greatest horror MOVIES ever. And besides Scream isn't even the best horror trilogy either. One reason is because the Scream movies are mainly thriller/mystery/spoof type of movie not really horror movies. I mean if you're going to call Scream a horror movie then any movie with a killer is a horror movie and that's not true. Also since the majority of the small amount of horror elements in any of them were done in a spoofing manner it doesn't make it into a horror movie.

Evil Dead, Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness is a better trilogy but i won't call it the greatest ever because it more of a trilogy that you either love or hate...kinda like scream. Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead and Day of the Dead which is based around the zombies so can be considered a trilogy revolving around the same characters is one of the best horror trilogies but i could be forgeting something so i won't call it the greatest ever. Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein and Son of Frankenstein is also a good one that's easily better then Scream movie and horror wise.

But it's your opinion and you enjoy those movies so carry on. I'm not trying to tell you that you're wrong for liking them. Just don't tell us that it's the greatest series when that clearly is not so. Yes i know i said Nightmare on Elm Street which is a flawed series was my pick but i didn't say it was the best ever.

I'd have to agree that "Nightmare..." probably is the best series. I'd consider the "Scream" flicks to be slasher movies - and that's horror to me. The first one is excellent, the second godd, and the third so-so. I still think they lose out when compared to Freddy, though...

A friend of mine speaks very highly about the three Japanese "Ring" movies (Ring, Ring 2 and Ring 0 - Birthday). Haven't seen them myself, though. I *have* seen the trailers, and they scared me... in a good way.

while I don't think it was the best horror series ever, the Omen series was good.

But ya know what? Screw Freddy and the whole Nightmare series. Only the first one was any good, or even watchable.

I'd say it's a tie between Halloween and Friday the 13th, because Halloween had the better movie, but most of the Friday the 13th movies were better than most of the Halloween movies.

You should really go out and watch some more horror movies. Sorry to sound insulting, but to say that kind of thing about the Scream trilogy compared to other stuff out there is almost laughable. Scream was good, Scream 2 was mediocre and Scream 3 was horrible.

As for other horror series that are better than Scream?

Phantasm

Sleepaway Camp

Evil Dead

Maniac Cop

Basket Case

Hellraiser

I could name more, but you get the point.

Basket Case has a sequel? Never knew that...didn't the first one end with the kid and his mutant of a removed siamese twin brother dying? Unless there's an entirely different series of movies...

And yes, Phantasm owns ye all. Except for Phantasm III, but that was necessary to lead into OblIVion for obvious reasons. And I still remember the theme music...**shivers**

Michael Baldwin, Reggie Miller, and Angus Scrimm are my favorite team in horror movies. Reggie Miller is the man...

Actually, Basket Case has 2 sequels. The entire trilogy has the same director and star. Here are links to the IMDB pages for Basket Case 2 and Basket Case 3. The sequels have much better effects, but are also much more campy and funny than the original. I own the original on DVD and the sequels on VHS, they are worth finding if you like schlocky, old school horror comedies.

Romero's Zombie series is probably the best as all the films retained a consistant quality and contemporary relevance. The Evil Dead series is a fun one as well. Both these series redefined their approach slightly for each film and didn't make exactly the same film continously (even Evil Dead 2 changed the tone of the original if nothing else). The Scream, Elm Street and Halloween series have great originals but worthless sequels. I thought they never quite made good on the potential Freddy's back story had for some good sequels. All the Friday the 13th films are terrible.

Even though he has some creative kills, to me Freddy is kind of a pussy compared to Mike Myers or the Tall Man.  Myers is da' man he's a fucking energizer battery(pun intended)......yeah.

I don't know about best series. but I know Texas Chainsaw massacre is the best horror movie ever.  I used to watch all the horror movies when I was a kid, but only the origanal chainsaw movie scared me.

The reason was simple, I was young at the time but was'nt fuckin stupid.  You could watch any of the halloween and friday the 13 and all the other horror movies and no matter what you did to the lead villian they would never die.

But when you watching chainsaw, they are really people that can be stopped and everything about the movie makes you believe something like this could really happen.

I'm definitely gonna go with the suggestions of The Omen and Romero's "living dead" series.  I only say this because very few horror film series are consistently good (in fact, none that I can think of other than the two I mentioned above), with the exception of the Leprechauns, which are consistently bad/funny.

Now that I think about it, Full Moon's Puppet Master series is pretty damn cool, and their Subspecies vampire series is supposed to be good too, although I've never seen it, and that would probably border more on gothic romance/fantasy than actual horror.

Man, I LOVE Psycho III. I don't know what it is about it, but I watch it all the time. Perkins added some subtle, inside humour to the Norman Bates character, and the music kicks ass. I know the original is a classic (I love it) but I've actually watched part III more.

As for Texas Chainsaw Massacre, the original is fantastic. Considering it was extremely low budget, it was shot beautifully and is a real inspiration for other low budget filmmakers. Funny enough, I really like Leatherface: TCM 3 as well. I think it's by far the best TCM sequel (although part 4 is totally bizarre).

The only films that you listed there that I would even consider to be good horror films is the Evil Dead series but due to lack of budget the film isn't as great as it would have been given more money.

Go ahead and name more because I don't get your point.
