Cannibal Corpse - Kill

Yeah. More of the same from the masters of death. And you know what? That's not bad. They may not be trying to experiment a little, or even push their music to a slightly different level, but I don't expect them to be like Opeth and write 17-minute epics weaving wonderful audible tapestries and then coming in with some nice heaviness and growls. I expect them to write and play tunes to grind my skull into the guardrail to, and this album accomplishes that in spades. Fun, brutal, grimy, heavy...and Corpsegrinder's growls are as great as ever.

 

Dying Fetus - Stop at Nothing

I used to hate Dying Fetus for the horrible back-up growls. If you've heard them, you know the ones I'm talking about. But they've grown on me. I've listened to "One Shot, One Kill" quite a few times, enough to get me to buy this album. And it's fucking schweet. Downside is that there's a glitch on the disc, so 29 seconds into "One Shot, One Kill" it skips to the point where you either need to stop the disc or skip the track. Bullshit.

 

Exodus - Fabulous Disaster

Outside of "The Toxic Waltz" and the cover of "Low Rider," it's a so-so album. I stand by my statement of Shovel Headed Kill Machine being the best album by Exodus, which is odd because it's their most recent, but I do believe that to be the truth. Again, fun for those two tracks, but the rest is pretty generic thrash metal of the 80's. Not bad, but not great either.

 

Municipal Waste - The Art of Partying

Greatness. On par, if not better, than Hazardous Mutation. I fucking love it. I can't even pinpoint what it is. It's obvious that Ryan Waste (guitars), Dave Witte (drums), and LandPhil (bass) have enough talent to be more than just a generic throwback crossover/thrash band, but it's also obvious that they ARE more than just a generic throwback crossover/thrash band. They're thrash metal taken to its most primal step with the whole theme of partying, and it works like a Mexican in SoCal that needs to feed his family. It's a great album filled with enough energy to make even haters of thrash and thrash metal take some notice. Witte's pounding of the skins isn't so much technically sound as it is fast and furious, like any good punk/hardcore drummer, but it's interesting enough to keep the short songs (the longest song on the album is 4 minutes and 20 seconds, obviously a joke by the band, but is also filled with two minutes of silence ended by, IIRC, the sound of a bubbler) from being too short to be erased quickly from your memory. Ryan and Phil work in perfect harmony, too, as Ryan will do some sick riffs - nothing overly complicated, but the speed and precision it's being done at makes one wonder how much Adderoll (sp.?) he's snorted - while Phil channels Steve Harris in how great his simplistic basslines underneath the guitar make the songs flow. Tony Foresta's pseudo-screamed vocals are just as solid as on Hazardous, but it's obvious that the reason he's in the band is his stage presence, as even when I last saw them (December of last year) and with a broken leg, he still captivated everybody in the pit. Great, great, GREAT fucking album. Municipal Waste IS gonna fuck you up.

I saw Municipal Waste once. Was the singer wearing too short jogging shorts when you saw him?

He either wears entirely 80's skater gear (too-short jogging shorts, sleeveless bright-colored shirt, hat with the brim flipped up), or t-shirt and jeans. Either way, Tony Forsta (frontman) is fucking great live. Crowd-surfing...via boogeyboard...with a beer-bong...he's fucking amazing.

"Meat Sandwich," "Gor-Gor," and "Road Behind." 'Nuff said. One more Gwar album to go, aside from Slave Pit-exclusive live stuff, Live From Mt. Fuji, and the rarity of demo's called Let There be Gwar. But yeah, one more studio LP.

 

Send More Paramedics - Feast for the Fallen

The first LP by soon-to-quit Brit zombiecore pioneers, and one of my favorite bands, Send More Paramedics. I've only heard one song thus far off of it, "Aim for the Head," which is 8 seconds of madness, and I'm listening to the 25-minute untitled track. It's two of the band members doing bad American accents (you can tell every here and there that they're insanely British), with one being a driver, and the other being a hitchhiker who witnessed a zombie outbreak in the fictional town of San Lazarus (hey!), New Mexico. Detailed, by-the-numbers zombie outbreak story, but it's entertaining as shit. It's sad that they're calling it quits by Halloween, especially since they'd be perfect for Rock and Shock (but I believe they have two gigs in the London area around then).

Dying Fetus - Killing on Adrenaline

Been getting really into the death/grind stuff, mostly thanks to a growing love of Cannibal Corpse, and decided to give Fetus a try when I heard the song "One Shot, One Kill," which was lovely. Bought Stop at Nothing, and now I get the only other album with a song on it that I actually know, that being "Kill Your Mother/Rape Your Dog." Fun death/grind, and the annoying burp-like vocals have grown on me.

 

Exodus - Pleasures of the Flesh

I'm en route to naming Exodus as my favorite thrash metal band after Slayer, since Bonded by Blood, Fabulous Disaster, and the recent Shovel-Headed Kill Machine are all tremendous thrashterpieces (haha, awful puns are metal)...but outside of "Brain Dead," this doesn't have a whole lot for me. Fabulous has three solid tunes on it ("Toxic Waltz," the proof that metal is blues-based with "Cajun Hell," and a laughable cover of "Low Rider"), but this...eh.

Marduk - Panzer Division Marduk

I once owned the double-disc live album, Infernal Eternal, many moons ago. I then traded it with a (then) friend for his copy of Morbid Angel's Domination, as he was more into black metal and I was more into death metal. But I've recently been listening to black metal with an open ear. I'm halfway through Lords of Chaos, and due to a lack of availablity I have not been able to find REAL Mayhem albums, or even any Burzum besides the newer "darkwave"-ish style that Varg's been into since going to prison. So I found Marduk again, and I knew all but two of the songs on the album from Infernal, so I picked it up. Lovely. I was looking for Nightwing, which has "Dreams of Blood and Iron" on it, but I forgot the name of the song and thus couldn't find it. I plan on going to the nearest Newbury Comics to look for it this afternoon. Lovely, Christraping black metal.

 

Skinless - From Sacrifice to Survival

I own Trample the Weak, Hurdle the Dead and love it. I'd credit Skinless with really getting me into the more brutal aspects of death metal, along with Amputated and (of course) Cannibal Corpse. I was looking for Foreshadowing Our Demise or Progressions Towards Evil, the former featuring "The Optimist" (which begins with a clip of Vince McMahon shouting "life sucks, and then you die") and the latter featuring my personal favorite "Tampon Lollipops" ("She didn't have legs!"), but this was all they had. Decent album, pretty far inferior to Trample, but a nice slab of American death.

 

And on the music DVD front...

GWAR - Blood, Bath, And Beyond

This is a nice piece of Gwar-chandise that chronicles their 20+ years offending and entertaining. There's rare footage of a Gwar show where Dave Brockie's idea of Oderus Urungus had yet to include the mask, fake brain, or massive ugly phallus, and there's also plenty of footage of Tekno Destructo taking on Gwar. Brockie's humor shines through in spades during the "presentation" he and Sleazy P. Martini partake in during the introductions of clips, and it's nice to be able to tell that even after doing the same thing for 20 years he still enjoys it and makes the most out of it. The sound quality is a little muffled, due to the low budget of just about everything Gwar has ever been a part of, but there's enough rare footage and Gwar-tastic humor (remember, PUNS ARE METAL) to keep any fan interested for at least a little bit. Next up on the Gwar DVD front is the music video DVD, which I hear is much better (it contains all of Gwar's music videos from Hell-O! until Violence Has Arrived).

I have always contended that THE WHO were probably the most overrated British Invasion band, and have even gone so far as to call them the most overrated major band in rock history. That said, I recently bought a two-record set featuring The Who Sell Out and A Quick One and really like both albums. What can I say? My track record of poor judgement continues unabated.

Even during their golden era, the Who were churning out great songs and shitting the bed in equal measure. Before realizing that, I spent way too long convincing myself that the Who had really good albums. Wrong! The only good one is Live at Leeds.

Dethklok - The Dethalbum

It's fun. 'Nuff said. Plus, there are actually some solid songs! On the 2-disc edition, the second disk has a few funny skits (including Dethklok getting in tune, which involves not a single one of them actually knowing how to tune a guitar), but the real highlight of the entire album, as it were, is the track "Birthday Dethday." It is everything one should ever love about death metal, and done with a good amount of hilarity that even fans of the show that don't like death metal, or anybody with a good sense of humor, can appreciate it. All in all, there's plenty of tongue-in-cheek "metal" moments, and it's worth a listen.[/i]

A bunch of Bob Dylan CDs were on sale for $8 at the local independent music store so I picked up a pair. Hopefully next week, I can pick up Highway 61 Revisited (which I inexplicably don't have).

Haven't gotten a good chance to really listen to either but I can see why Hard Rain is considered one of his worst live albums. It's definitely interesting. Not sure which way I feel about it but I'm glad I only paid $8. Haven't listened to much of Street Legal but I love "Changing of The Guards"
