My top ten ecw matches

Recommended Posts

Guest Black Tiger

I have a huge library of ECW matches, however I can only list what I've seen, so the Sabu VS RVD respect match is out. I'll include a time period for when the match took place and a few highlights of it.

10. Chris Candido VS Lance Storm (Heatwave '98)

This was what Joey Styles called an old fashioned Grudge Match. They were former tag team partners who had a nasty split. Chris shocks the crowd by coming out with Sunny. Sunny spends most of the match yelling at the ref which makes Joey ask "He lives with her?" and Douglas replies "He does more than that with her". Some highlights include a nice superkick by Storm, the old trick of the powder backfiring on the cheater. Candido gets the pin after a top rope powerbomb.

09. Jerry Lynn and Masato Tanaka VS Mike Awesome and Justin Credible. (07/98)

This match was the result of two different feuds going on in ECW. Credible has Jason, Chastity and Nicole Bass out with him. The heels are scared shitless of Tanaka after he takes 4 chair shots to the head. Awesome powerbombs Tanaka through a table on the floor from in the ring. Tanaka hits a nasty Tornado DDT on two chairs. Jerry tombstones Justin for the pin.

08. Rob Van Dam VS Sabu: Stretcher Match (07/96)

This was the final match in their rivalry. RVD got his first win over Sabu a month before and Sabu wants payback. The match is a great airel match with RVD hitting lots of topes. The end comes when Sabu is on the stretcher and RVD goes to jump on him and misses. RVD lands on the stretcher and is carried off.

07. Taka, Togo, Terry Boy VS Sasuke, Hamada, Yakashiji. (04/97)

This was an attraction of Barely Legal and was better than anything that ECW put on that night. The match is full of high impact DDT's and brainbusters. Cut bit as Terry Boy throws out Yakashiji and he rolls back in as Terry Boy gets out. Taka hits a nasty missile dropkick to Sasuke's head. Saskue pins Taka with a Tiger Suplex.

06. Raven and Stevie Richards VS Pit Bulls (07/95)

People priase this as the best match ECW ever put on, it's very good but not the best. Raven pins #2 after a piledriver through a table in 2 minutes. #1 pins Richards after a Superbomb, All hell breaks loose as #2 gets hurt so Tommy Dreamer comes out and pins Raven, Fonzie says "No Way Daddy" and Dick Dudley chokeslams him, Fonzie banned the chokeslam, so he has to lift the ban or suspend Dudley, 911 hits the ring and chokeslams Fonzie. #2 recovers and superbombs both Richards and Raven and Todd Gordon counts to three.

05. Stevie Richards VS Sabu (01/96)

This may come as a shock but this match was the show stealer for House Party '96. It took a pregency angle to upstage this. They do a typical Sabu match with Stevie scared shitless. He gets some balls after a while and gets some actul offense in, at one point he hits his superkick and Paul E. is frantic screaming at Sabu to shake it off. Sabu hits an AAFB (Atomic Arabian Face Buster) for the pin.

04. Tommy Dreamer VS CW Anderson: I Quit match. (01/01)

Another one that people will say sucked. Consider how fucked up Dreamer was and then watch this match. They brawl to start, CW brings a chair into play and kills Tommy. Towel Boy gives Dreamer some presents and he hits CW with a cookie sheet, Another gift is Razor Wire. CW gets rid of Towel Boy and hits a Spine Buster on the wire. Dreamer does a DVD through a table and uses the siding to gouge his eyes to get the subbmission.

03. Rob Van Dam VS Lance Storm (01/99)  I only saw this match once and it was a while ago so my memory is a little fuzzy. It was supposed to be RVD vs Tanaka (I think Tanaka would have won) but Tanaka went back to FMW. Also on the card was Jerry Lynn VS Mikey Whipwreck VS Lance Storm, but Jerry was hurt and Mikey left. Anyway a nice wrestling sequence to start and Lance tries to outbrawl RVD. Lance brings in a chair and RVD fucks up the Van Daminator, his foot went through the chair's seat and he kicked Storm in the face. RVD gets a pin with a German Suplex

02. Taz VS Chris Jericho: It was Jericho's debut in the ECW arena. Taz was on his Path of Rage. Jericho uses some nice highflying moves to start (my tape is something like 3rd generation, and it's a fan cam) Tazz uses some suplex's to hurt his neck, Jericho is holding his neck after a vicious Hardway Taz Plex. Taz locks on the Tazmission but Jericho won't tap, the ref stops the match, Jericho still won't tap, Brian Pillman comes out to get Taz off him. Jericho got a standing ovasion for his courage.

and now, what I consider the best match in ECW history to be

01. Raven VS Terry Gordy (Hardcore Heaven '96)

This is Terry's first US run since Global in 1994. He beats the living shit out of Raven. Raven goes to the floor, Terry follows him and gives more punishment. Raven grabs a chair, Terry grabs it and beats Raven with it.  Back in the ring, Terry gets the Oriental Spike on, Stevie Richards and Super Nova try to pry him off and can't. Tomm Dreamer takes care of them. Brian Lee chokeslams Tommy. Gordy powerbombs Lee. Raven brings in barbed wire and Terry puts it on Raven's head. Richards hits a superkick and Raven DDT's him for the pin. The heat was huge, it's only topped by Sandman's return in 1999, and RVD's return in 2001.

Any comments or disagreements, or mistakes feel free to let me know.

I have seen RVD VS Bigelow for the TV Title. It was a huge markout moment for me, If I was doing a top 15 or 20 list it would have made it without question, as well as the four way dance on the Path Of Destruction DVD.

-I'm glad you are giving this match the attention it deserves.  Dreamer and Anderson worked very well together in their series of matches.

I think the Michinoku Pro six-man's a little low at number seven, and I don't see Malenko/Guerrero there, but other than that I can't quibble with the rest of it.

How much ECW do you actually have?  Your missing out on...

RVD/Lynn

Tanaka/Awesome

Juvy/Rey Mysterio Jr

Douglas/Pitbull #2/Scoropio/Jericho

Al Snow/Benoit

Douglas/Jennety

Funk/Sabu/Douglas (60 minute match)

I liked my original Top ten ECW post back at the old fourm, it feels to good to have a basterdized brainchild though...

I have all the DVD's

Hardcore Heaven '94

Return of The Funker

Barbed Wire Hoodies and Chokeslams

Heatwave '95

House Party '96

Big Ass Extreme Bash

Hostile City Showdown '96

Hardcore Heaven '96

November 2 Remember 2000

Guilty as Charged 2001

I also have some various best of comps of Jericho, Raven, Storm etc.

I didn't list RVD/Lynn because I didn't enjoy the match that much, They worked hard but I thought it was too long.

The four way dance would have made the list if it was a top 12 or 15

I've never seen Benoit/Snow (I want to though)

I hated Douglas VS Jannetty

I've seen TONS of Tanaka VS Awesome in FMW and I find their ECW stuff to be good but less entertaining than their FMW, this isn't their fault though FMW lets them get away with more than ECW did.

I found this little list to be the wierdest list of best matches i've ever seen in that i couldn't agree with about 8 or 9 of them!

I cannot believe you can leave out any guerrero-malenko match as they are the benchmarks of WRESTLING and a strong reason why ecw fans considered themselves the most cultured.

Your number 1 pick is almost baffling, I have that show and i did enjoy it a lot but the fact is it's basically a squash match as gordy beats the shit out of raven for the entire match until raven wins right at the end.

You mentioned the crowd heat and i agree although i believe the crowd heat made it a lot better than it was.

Another is the juvy-mysterio 2/3 falls match, that fucking ruled!

As the aforementioned benoit-snow match which is a lot better match than gordy-raven btw it still falls into the same catergory as them with benoit basically squashing snow for 15 minutes.

And that isn't such a huge ecw library to be working from btw.

How can you not include any Tajiri/Whipwreck vs Mamaluke/Guido matches-there were by far the best tag matches ECW ever did

That's a pretty good list , but you are mising a couple of classics. Like Tajiri/Super Crazy, RVD/Lynn, and Awesome/Tanaka just to name a couple. And Raven vs. Gordy at #1? It wasn't even the best match at Hardcore Heaven 96, RVD vs. Sabu was. But for the most part it was pretty good.
