Brutus Beefcake bust

Body slam: T scare lands ex-grappler in rehab

By Laurel J. Sweet

Friday, February 13, 2004

He was the pec-perfect model for a toy action figure and a cartoon

character puzzle, but it's former pro wrestling giant Brutus ``The Barber''

Beefcake who's gone to pieces.

Beefcake - these days Edward Leslie, 46, of Winchester -

voluntarily checked into a treatment program Monday, according to a source,

after cocaine he admitted was his created an anthrax scare at the MBTA's

Downtown Crossing subway station.

Sources said the man who acquired his stage name for hacking off

the hair of his enemies in the ring had been working there part time as a

fare collector - a job that pays $25,000 a year.

``He was a big star for the World Wrestling (Federation),'' Buck

Woodward, a columnist for the online magazine Pro Wrestling Insider, said

yesterday of Leslie.

``During the '80s wrestling boom he became popular because he was

very good friends with Hulk Hogan.''

But behind the colossal bronzed chest and TV set of his own

wrestling talk show, ``The Barber Shop,'' Leslie's life was headed for the

ropes. In 1990, his face was reconstructed with plates and bolts after a

freak parasailing accident. Last April, the IRS slammed him with a lien for

$57,425, according to records.

The MBTA confirmed yesterday they have an employee named Edward

Leslie, but would not say if he was the one they suspended without pay after

cocaine turned up Sunday afternoon on the counter of a Downtown Crossing

fare booth, prompting an emergency hazmat response.

``Right now it's only an internal disciplinary matter,'' said

MBTA spokesman Joe Pesaturo. ``He has been cooperative with police.''

Although the subway station was evacuated, MBTA Deputy Police

Chief Thomas McCarthy said the fare collector - who he also would not

identify - spared commuters further inconvenience by coming clean and

dispelling terrorism fears.

Leslie's wife, Barbara, did not return a call yesterday.

Leslie was easily earning ``six figures'' in his heyday, said

Woodward, noting that such falls from fame in the world of wrestling ``have

happened before. There are guys who wasted their money, just like a rock

star.''

Wow... does any wrestler ever enjoy life after wrestling?

I think the real question is, how do you make six figures a year, but not know how to at least SAVE some of it... I mean, working as a fare collector? WTF?

UYI,

you can be that prick

i knew it didnt "really" go here ive been on the board for a long time usually when theres a big story though some people put it here for the most traffic

a mod can move it at their discretion

i was shocked to even find out he works on the T up here..i was just up at Harvard last saturday

if i handed over a token to the barber on my way up there/back with a stop in downtown boston id probably do a double take

of course since he is suspended for now if he comes back im hopping on the train and kicking a friend through the token booth's plexiglas window to signify the breakup of our tag team :)

A fare collector on a Boston subway.

Pretty good for a guy who once main-evented Starrcade, I'd say.

And have you seen any pictures of him lately? He's got to be at least 350 pounds. He's could double as A-Train's bodyhairless twin.

Couldn't Hogan just get him out of everything? I just figured he's done it 6000 times, what's one more?

Hogan has already done more than enough for this guy. How much help do you want him to give Brutus? If he helped him here I would bet anything he would just waste it on more coke. Brutus made big money in the WWF and then Hogan got him a plush job in WCW, making mid-six figures. If he wasted all of that what could Hogan do now?

Sorry if you didn't catch it but I guess I should've added the [/sarcasm] tags.

I like how they mentioned even in the article that Brutus got to where he was off of Hogan's coattails.

This reminds me, where the hell is Jake "The Snake" Roberts? Haven't heard about him for awhile.

Even more baffling, for me anyways, is how a cokehead even gets that big...

And this is what happens to professional wrestlers who are fucking stupid and blow their money all away.

And people who did save their money wisely (ex. Owen Hart)...well, aren't too lucky.

Hell, Mick Foley is lucky to not be a vegetable after all the shit he's done to his body.

Wow. That is really horrible. It just goes to show how the wrestling business has no security and how far one of its top performers can fall.

Don't forget his run as the Disciple where he basically just stood there and occasionally hit someone with a Stunner. That was probably good for another $400,000 a year.

All this, AND he hit him with a briefcase. Tsk tsk...
