From a 1936 poll:

 

Will FDR's policies lead to a dictatorship

 

55% - no

45% - yes

 

(83-17 split for yes from the GOP, 91-9 split for no in the Dems)

 

1/10/37 - 27% say the Republicans are dead as a political party. (Polls around this time also ask if the GOP should change their name)

 

1/31/37 - 68% say everybody in the US should be fingerprinted

 

5/23/37 - 84% say the insane and habital criminals should be sterilized

 

10/2/37 - 68% say a national vote should determine if we go to war (unless we're invaded, then.. we probably won't have time for a poll)

 

12/9/37 - 6% approve of Hitler's treatment of Jewish people in Germany, 3% approve of his treatment of Catholics

 

10/6/39 - 73% of Americans would defend Canada if it is invaded by a European power

 

4/7/40 - Top cause for cancer: bruises and injuries, #6 cause is smoking

 

4/7/40 - 2% think having cancer is shameful

 

4/28/40 - 7% say Germany was justified to march into Norway and Denmark

 

6/9/40 - 63% of Americans would volunteer to fight for Canada if a European power invaded

 

7/14/41 - 72% would like to see Russia beat Germany, 4% would prefer Germany beat Russia

 

8/1/44 - 97% say the Nazi leaders should be punished

 

I got most of these from the 1935-1948 volume. Ok. All of it. But, Gallup should put out more on this.

 

Other themes from that period of time:

 

Alot of questions about scrapping the GOP/Dems for Liberal and Conservative parties

 

And alot of polls where 5% would go to fight in Europe. Well, until Pearl Harbor.

 

I also copied a survey where most people would prefer gruesome executions of Japanese leaders. "Turn them over to the Chinese" and such.

 

Still.. you have to wonder who the fucked up minority is. Sure, those polls had some obvious questions. But, polls can reveal that 5% of the country, at the least, is fucked in the head.
