Vern Gagne 0 Report post Posted February 16, 2004 Personally I think Baseball has enough competive balance. We've seen enough small to mid market teams make the postseason. The Angels and Marlins won the World Series. The A's have made the postseason 4 consecutive years, and the Twins 2 consecutive years. It's been proven if you can run your franchise well you can have success reguardless of payroll.
HarleyQuinn 0 Report post Posted February 16, 2004 Heck, improved teams this offseason include the likes of Baltimore, Toronto, Anaheim, Tampa Bay, Detroit, Oakland, Kansas City as well as other teams expecting stars to return like San Diego(with Nevin). To say that in essence, a salary cap would improve teams to make the league competitive would just be redundant as teams are already improving, granted maybe not as much as you want but it's still there. EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted February 17, 2004 Well, your point was obvious. If anyone on this board does not know that a salary cap would help competitive balance they are complete morons. Do you want 100 posts of people agreeing with you? That's hardly a proven fact. A salary cap would did a lot for basketball didn't it? Like the Lakers, guys would sign with the Yankees for the name, and the tradition. Our country largely runs on a free market, and traditionally does quite well for itself. Same for baseball. Let the market dictate itself. As for competitive balance, teams have sucked since the beginning of the game.
Kahran Ramsus 0 Report post Posted February 18, 2004 Baseball is a fan-friendly sport, but Major League Baseball is the farthest thing from it, unless the fans enjoy being pissed on. I have never been less interested in MLB as I am right now. Remember how great things were from the mid-80s to the early 90s? These days the Yankees have made every WS save one since 1997. It is pathetic. The Blue Jays & Orioles are eliminated from post-season contention right now and the Grapefruit League hasn't even started yet. It isn't knowing that a team will not be competitive this year that drives away the fans. It is knowing that they won't be competitive next year, or in 5 years, or in 10 years, because the same five or six teams steal all of the good players. The Union is already complaining about the steroid issue, and they are so powerful these days you just know that nothing will be done even if it is proven that several stars are taking them. MLB also has the worst commish in history. Where is Landis to kick some ass when you need him. It is getting so that I almost want them to go on strike. It needs a hard cap. Nothing else will suffice, the situation has gotten so bad. I really want to watch it, I really do, but the lack of competitive balance is killing my interest before the season even begins. Until then I will watch AAA. The way baseball was meant to be played, and in MLB once was.

Remember how great things were from the mid-30s to the early 40s? These days the Yankees have made every WS save one since 1947. It is pathetic. The Browns & Athletics are eliminated from post-season contention right now and the Grapefruit League hasn't even started yet. Next..... It needs a hard cap. Nothing else will suffice, the situation has gotten so bad. I really want to watch it, I really do, but the lack of competitive balance is killing my interest before the season even begins. Until then I will watch AAA. The way baseball was meant to be played, and in MLB once was. How is the competitive balance any different than previous eras, particularly when the reserve clause kept salaries in check?
