Guest Report post Posted April 16, 2002 I don't wanna be too negative, because I love the WWF and always have for 95% of my life. But....The thing I don't like most about the WWF is the same ol' routine week in week out.... In particular, their format. RAW and/or SmackDown! comes to us every week from (enter location) and opens with the pyro, lights, and an introduction from JR (Cole) and the King (Tazz). They announce the Main Event (chose 2 or 4 of the following: Austin/HHH/Angle/'Taker/Rock/Jericho) and hype some other matches for the night (enter graphics of either RVD/Edge/nWo/Kane/Hardyz). Then one of the superstars I listed already OR a McMahon, makes their way down the ramp to go on and on and on with a token interview to 'hype up' a match and/or angle. The show goes on with some or all of the following: 3 Minute match for the IC Title....backstage segment....T-Shirt commercial.....Recap of what happened 4 minutes ago....backstage segment.....2 minute European Title match......Lugz Boot of the Week.....backstage interview with a random tag team for an upcoming match (pick one of the following: Hardyz/Chuck&Billy/makeshift team).....5 minute tag team match.......Divas video commercial.....Slam of the Week.....Tough Enough highlights.......a regular singles match involving any of the following: Al Snow, Crash, Maven, Big Show, X-Pac, Mr. Perfect, Tazz, Rikishi, or Val Venis........backstage segment......The Rock T-Shirt commercial.......backstage interview.........a lackluster hardcore match (pick two to three of the following: Hardcore Holly, Goldust, Spike Dudley, Kane, DDP).......some jibberish from the annouce team (talking about the attitude change from any of the following: Austin/Jericho/Angle/HHH).....backstage segment with a Main Eventer or a McMahon to hype the Main Event.......the latest WWF CD shill.....Main Event ( as I said before, chose 2 or 4 of the following: Austin/HHH/Angle/'Taker/Rock/Jericho) if its RAW, then pick 2, SmackDown! is usually a Tag Main Event, so pick 4.........Regardless, the show ends in roughly 8 minutes and its the EXACT SAME thing again til' the next show....Attitude Logo. Basically thats the routine for any average WWF TV show over the past 4 years, give or take a substitution here and there for the time frame. But in a nutshell, thats about it. They need more things to shake it up, and make the shows a little more exciting and not as monotonous. Have more surprises and changes to make the shows better as a whole. Obviously, a lot of fans just love main eventers mostly, but back in the day, if I didn't like the main event feud going on, I'd usually like the IC feud. Guest Report post Posted April 16, 2002 When I was a kid in Wichita, Ks. the NWA would have a show here every two weeks. Sure we had a bunch of "no name" wrestlers much of the time (some of whom I happened to think were pretty entertaining) but for Kansas I would say that we did pretty well. I recall seeing guys like, Lord Alfred Hays, The D.I. (later Sgt.) Bob Slaughter, The Shiek, The Iron Shiek, Ted Dibiase, Roddy Piper, Harley Race, Ric Flair, Dory Funk jr., Terry Funk, Bruser Brody, Dick Murdoch, Andre the Giant, even (in the early 80s) a very young Sean Michaels and Marty Jenetty and more. I guess I would say that my bad thing about the WWF is that it has created a situation where the regional circut has been pretty much obliterated by Vince Jr's monolithic "sports entertainment" machine. I admit, wrestling is much more mainstream now than it was in the early 70s when I started watching, and I know that a) today's stars tend to be much more athletic and b) the mainstream appeal means that wrestlers make more money, but I also know that sense the St. Louis office of the NWA went under in the early 80s my home town Is lucky to get a show every three or four years. Is the popularity of the WWF good for the wrestlers? I suppose it is for the select few that Vince Jr. allows into his stable, but many of the guys that I cheered for as a child (just as enthusiasticly as the kids cheer for the Rock or Stone Cold today) would certainly not make the cut in today's steroid pumped, high flying, gotta-be-cool, sports entertainment infused brand of Wrestling. I suppose that some will say that Vince Jr. was just a superior business man and that's why he now essentially (sp?) holds a monopoly on wrestling as the man on the street knows it. There's probably some truth to this. But the fact is, that before Vince Jr. came along A) wrestling was aimed at the working class, and made no pretence of being "cool" (i.e. it was not a snob affair) and B) promoters around the country agreed that one did not infringe on one another's teritories (Heyman was telling the truth). Vince Jr. and his marketing machine changed all that. OK wrestling is more popular now. So what? If you enjoy it who cares how many other people like it? I loved it as a kid even though my friends thought it was dumb. So a relative few Wrestlers make lotsa bucks. Good for the lucky few I guess. As for me, I prefer it old school.
