Guest Kevin Sullivan Booked My Divorce Posted April 16, 2002 Report Posted April 16, 2002 As far as mainstream interest goes, pretty big week for new stuff. Here's what I saw... *Black Knight - Well it's not as bad as I thought it would be, but still nothing to write home about. I read a review of it a while back and it noted the similarites between this and "Army of Darkness," so I kept noticing AOD stuff in the movie, which ruined it for me partially. B- *Domestic Disturbance - Predictable movie, but accomplishes what it's sent out to do. Vince Vaughn is pretty good in his role, and Travolta is ok. B- *Man Who Wasn't There - As far as the general public goes, I don't think they will like this. First off, it's in black and white and i just KNOW i will get calls at work about how the "tape is screwed up because the whole thing is in b&w." And secondly, the movie is just weird. I, however, enjoyed the movie and thought Billy Bob did an excellent job. If I have to nitpick, I suppose some of the movie dragged and just when you thought the movie was over, it kept going (see A.I.). B+ Everything else: *Deep End, The *Perfume *Tape *Texas Rangers
Guest Kevin Sullivan Booked My Divorce Posted April 17, 2002 Report Posted April 17, 2002 Whoops, forgot that "Ultimate Fights" thing that came out. It looks good, mostly cuz it has clips from THEY LIVE~!
Guest Posted April 17, 2002 Report Posted April 17, 2002 Ouch. If it wasn't for The Deep End and The Man Who Wasn't There, this week would be a total wash for new releases. What a bunch of crap. I pity anyone who actually spends money on the Black Knight DVD.
Guest evenflowDDT Posted April 17, 2002 Report Posted April 17, 2002 If the "Ultimate Fights" disc is anything like the "Boogeymen" disc that came out last Halloween (I think they're both produced by Flixmix, right?), it'll be kinda cool, but disappointing given the potential. I'll still probably end up buying it though. Also, I have wanted to see Man Who Wasn't There for a while (I keep hearing about how great Billy Bob Thornton but I've yet to see one of his films), but [mainstream movie fan] it's in black and white! Why would anyone want to do that?! I don't want to see a movie in black and white... no good movies ever came out in black and white... Metropolis? Isn't that some cartoon? Casablanca what? [/mainstream movie fan].
Guest Human Fly Posted April 17, 2002 Report Posted April 17, 2002 If a week that includes "Black Knight" is a decent week. I'd hate to see what a bad week is.
Guest Kevin Sullivan Booked My Divorce Posted April 18, 2002 Report Posted April 18, 2002 I'd hate to see what a bad week is. Wait, 'til next Tuesday.
Guest Posted April 18, 2002 Report Posted April 18, 2002 I thought yuo were talking about theater releases and not rentals. Whatever, I thought Black Knight was piece of shit. Domestic Disturbance was okay...even Vaughan couldnt save it himself.
Guest TUS_02 Posted April 18, 2002 Report Posted April 18, 2002 I'd hate to see what a bad week is. Wait, 'til next Tuesday Transformers - Complete First season BOXED SET! That, right there, cancels ANYTHING else to make this coming Tuesday a great day for release. (According to amazon.com)
Guest Posted April 19, 2002 Report Posted April 19, 2002 As far as I can tell, next weeks releases are much better than this weeks.
Guest Kevin Sullivan Booked My Divorce Posted April 20, 2002 Report Posted April 20, 2002 Yeah like "Behind Enemy Lines" and umm...... umm... oh yeah, "Novocaine" with Steve Martin. hmm I stick by my original statement.
Guest Posted April 20, 2002 Report Posted April 20, 2002 Umm, Novocaine is a hell of a lot better than Black Knight. Have you even seen it, or isn't it mainstream enough for you?
Guest Kevin Sullivan Booked My Divorce Posted April 20, 2002 Report Posted April 20, 2002 I worked the one day that Novocaine was at theaters.
Guest Kevin Sullivan Booked My Divorce Posted April 21, 2002 Report Posted April 21, 2002 OMG "MAINSTREAM BOY" LOL! Too bad you're name is "C.H.U.D." and therefore automatically fail at flame wars.
Guest Flyboy Posted April 21, 2002 Report Posted April 21, 2002 Yeah like "Behind Enemy Lines" and umm...... umm... oh yeah, "Novocaine" with Steve Martin. hmm I stick by my original statement. Hey, I liked Behind Enemy Lines!
Guest Posted April 21, 2002 Report Posted April 21, 2002 I'm not flaming you. From what I can tell, you are a mainstream boy, which means all you watch are generic, mainstream films. I mean, you insulted Novocaine, which you haven't even seen, and you gave Black Knight a B-. That says a whole lot right there. Maybe I'll start a "new releases" thread that actually discusses important films and not just suburban fluff.
Guest evenflowDDT Posted April 22, 2002 Report Posted April 22, 2002 I was actually looking forward to seeing Novocaine after seeing the trailer with The Item. I saw a review of an advanced DVD copy at a website and my appetite was further whetted. So... ummm... yeah, that's the Novocaine argument. But as for "suburban fluff"... while I agree that mainstream new releases are not the only ones that should be mentioned, the majority of independent releases are ones that nobody will have heard of, even me, a suburban boy that utilizes the wonders of video rental to try and see many independent releases that never made it to "suburban fluff cinema". I enjoy independent films very much, but often-times, not knowing a thing about a film makes it difficult to be excited about, and since I only have time/money to rent a few movies a week, often knowing nothing about a new independent release insures that I will pass it up in favor of an older "classic" I have never seen or a new release of "suburban fluff" that I missed in theatres. That being said, perhaps try and chronicle the more high-profile independent releases, or maybe include short summaries or your personal thoughts on the films you have seen. That is, if you are serious about your suggestion C.H.U.D. From what I've read of your posts, you have very similar tastes to me, and even if you didn't, you present them in a respectable, non-biased (or at least not terribly biased) manner. I'd like to see your "new release" threads in the future...
Guest Kevin Sullivan Booked My Divorce Posted April 22, 2002 Report Posted April 22, 2002 I liked Behind Enemy Lines, too. Anyway, a B- is pretty low for how I grade. I usually don't go above an A- and below a C+, unless of course the movie is one of my favorites of all time, or the movie is absolutely horrible. Granted, Black Knight wasn't very creative; but I like Martin Lawrence, and his facial expressions kept this movie from getting a lower grade. As for being "mainstream," I have to watch those because that is what customers ask me about (I work at Blockbuster Video). Someone is gonna watch something, say Donnie Darko, no matter what I think because they know things about movies. Everybody else, who know nothing about movies, ask me about Black Knight and Domestic Disturbance. Just because I have to watch them doesn't mean I have to hate them. Besides, I try to balance the bad with the good, I saw Man Who Wasn't There, and (oddly enough) no one has been renting that. So yes, I can discuss intelligent films, too, I just haven't seen Novocaine, mostly because I haven't found Steve Martin funny in several years. But hell, it might even be good for all I know. I was just trying to prove a point that only 2 big movies come out next week. Wow, that was long.
Guest evenflowDDT Posted April 22, 2002 Report Posted April 22, 2002 Wow, that was long. Try reading some of my responses, where I mean to write one sentence replies but end up with long paragraphs all the time. Seriously though, I understand where you're coming from, especially since a friend of mine is a co-manager (or assistant manager, something like that) at a Blockbuster Video. I also understand C.H.U.D.'s points, and agree with him more; I haven't seen a lot of films, but I don't diss something I've never seen, or if I do, I admit that I haven't seen the whole thing. This, of course, generally gets me a "What?! You've never seen [insert popular/"classic" film title here]?!" I hate that. There are too many movies, you can't see 'em all, but don't diss what you haven't seen. By the by, this isn't a flame or anything of the sort, if I came off as attacking you, my apologies in advance. On a lighter note, at the risk of sounding misinformed from not having seen something, who is Kevin Sullivan?
Guest Kevin Sullivan Booked My Divorce Posted April 22, 2002 Report Posted April 22, 2002 He was a wrestler, nicknamed "The Taskmaster." My screenname refers to something he did, where he booked an angle between his real life wife and Chris Benoit. In the angle, Benoit steals Womyn (Sullivan's wife) away from Kevin. Oddly enough, Benoit and Womyn fell in love together in real life and Womyn dumped Sullivan for Benoit, so Kev essentially booked his own divorce. BTW, since you seem to be a Raven fan, don't you just hate how they are wasting him?
Guest evenflowDDT Posted April 22, 2002 Report Posted April 22, 2002 BTW, since you seem to be a Raven fan, don't you just hate how they are wasting him? Even though this stretches outside of the folder topic, indeed I do, but I'd rather have him on commentary than doing nothing. I actually appreciate him very much on commentary, because his intelligence is part of what attracted me to him in the first place, since I have I liked him ever since I started watching wrestling at the time of No Mercy 2K1, I still remember a match around that time that was Kurt Angle and Raven vs. Essa Rios and the Big Show, I think that was the first match I saw that I marked out for anyone... I unfortunately haven't been surprised/entertained/knowledgable enough to do it very often since then The irony is that as much as I'm a Raven fan, I have yet to see him at his best during his ECW stint; I have only read about his time in that and WCW online. Maybe someday I'll remember to buy/rent an ECW DVD, or bug my friend who got me hooked on wrestling to trade for some ECW tapes so I can be a true Raven mark.
