Matt Young Posted March 4, 2004 Report Posted March 4, 2004 I have no idea why I remembered this now, but I recall reading a book about 5 years ago while I was a sophomore in high school. The only details I remember are that it features a person (I think it was a man) who chooses to stay locked inside a small living area for a year, I believe in order to acquire a large amount of money. He can have no contact with the outside world and his only company is the collection of books which he spends his days studying. I seem to recall him leaving the night before his time is up. Does anyone have a clue as to what I'm talking about? This is going to bug me until I figure it out, and it's something I'm really interested in reading again. I know that my description was pretty vague, but it's the best I can do.
Henry Spencer Posted March 5, 2004 Report Posted March 5, 2004 I remember reading that as a short story, not a book, but yeah. I think it's called The Bet, or something similar.
Matt Young Posted March 5, 2004 Author Report Posted March 5, 2004 You were right about the title and the fact that it is a short story. I don't know why I thought it was a book. I guess I justread it as part of a compilation of short stories. Someone at GameFAQs found the story online and gave me the link. Apparently it was written by Anton Chekhov. I'm going to look for a book of his short stories next time I head to Barnes and Noble. Although they list quite a few on the site, I'd prefer to have them in print form. The story is located at www.classicreader.com/read.php/sid.6/bookid.240/. I haven't gotten much of a chance to browse yet, but the site as a whole looks awesome.
