Matt Young 0 Report post Posted March 4, 2004 I have no idea why I remembered this now, but I recall reading a book about 5 years ago while I was a sophomore in high school. The only details I remember are that it features a person (I think it was a man) who chooses to stay locked inside a small living area for a year, I believe in order to acquire a large amount of money. He can have no contact with the outside world and his only company is the collection of books which he spends his days studying. I seem to recall him leaving the night before his time is up. Does anyone have a clue as to what I'm talking about? This is going to bug me until I figure it out, and it's something I'm really interested in reading again. I know that my description was pretty vague, but it's the best I can do.
Henry Spencer 0 Report post Posted March 5, 2004 I remember reading that as a short story, not a book, but yeah. I think it's called The Bet, or something similar.
Matt Young 0 Report post Posted March 5, 2004 You were right about the title and the fact that it is a short story. I don't know why I thought it was a book. I guess I justread it as part of a compilation of short stories. Someone at GameFAQs found the story online and gave me the link. Apparently it was written by Anton Chekhov. I'm going to look for a book of his short stories next time I head to Barnes and Noble. Although they list quite a few on the site, I'd prefer to have them in print form. The story is located at www.classicreader.com/read.php/sid.6/bookid.240/. I haven't gotten much of a chance to browse yet, but the site as a whole looks awesome.
