Manhunt Receives R Rating In Canada

Manhunt Receives R Rating

Cannot be sold to anyone under 18

On February 3, 2004 the Ontario Film Review Board took the rare step of giving a videogame an R rating. The review board usually allows the industry’s own ESRB (Entertainment Software Ratings Board) rating to be used in almost all cases. The game, “Manhunt” was reviewed after it was brought to their attention. The R rating was applied when the review board found the game to contain heavy violence and gore, as well as mutilation and blood letting.

The ESRB rating is usually more than good enough for the Review Board, but the system isn’t an enforceable standard under Ontario Law. The ESRB is meant as a guideline for parents purchasing games for their children but that won’t stop unscrupulous retailers from selling the product to those under 17. The R rating given by the Review Board is very enforceable, as anybody caught selling the product to a minor faces fines of $25,000 Canadian and jail time of up to a year for the individual, and a corporation can be fined $100,000 per offence. Retailers are asked to bring games to the attention of the review board that might need stronger classification, which appears to be why Manhunt was rated. It is possible that the game will now have to be relabeled with a sticker indicating it is restricted to players over the age of 18.

When asked to comment the game’s producer Rockstar games had this to say:

"Rockstar Games is appealing the decision with the Ontario Film Review Board."

While this is the first time the Ontario Government has stuck the R rating on a videogame, it is too early to tell if this is going to become a common thing. Manhunt already has a checkered past, having been banned completely in New Zealand.

ESRB Rating for the Game:

MATURE (17+)

Blood and gore

Intense Violence

Strong Language

Ontario Film Review Board Rating for the game:

RESTRICTED

BRUTAL VIOLENCE

COARSE LANGUAGE

VIOLENCE

CRUDE CONTENT

GORY SCENES

Why ban it? The game is obviously geared towards and made for adults. Anyone who sells or rents it to children deserves the fine they're going to get. But that should stop those of us who are able to appreciate it from enjoying it.

EDIT: That said, I think that this is just going to result in more copies being sold/rented. People will want to know what the "big deal" is all about, when in fact it's nothing more than what we've seen in the Resident Evil Series or even GTA. It just goes to show how fucked up our [Ontario and Canada] Government is. They can show pretty much the equivalent of pornography on Showcase at 11pm.. and I'd say a kid is more likely to come across worse things on cable tv late at night than on this videogame.

This is only Ontario right? I remember a few years ago how Soldier of Fortune got banned in British Columbia.

Booo! That was a good game.

Do you guys get the real Contra or Probotector?

Not the PC game, there was a game with that title, or something similar for the 16-bitters I believe.

Why ban it?

Because it really sucks.

You act like that isn't a good enough reason.

That's because it isn't.

Yes it is.

"The following games will not be distributed, sold, re-sold, played, stolen, rented, or borrowed anywhere within the boundaries of Canada, due to sucking so bad: Xenosaga, Xenogears, Final Fantasy X or X-2, Manhunt, anything developed by Acclaim pending review, and more to be announced later. This I command!

A] Martin is a wanker who shouldn't even be leader of this country.

B] I'd love you know, aside from personal preferences, why this game sucks so much...?

A) Well, I'm an American--join the club.

B) It's yet another transparent attempt for Rockstar to cash in on their popularity, only this time they decided to half-ass the gameplay.

Rockstar--let us choose our own viewpoints if you're going to have multiple ones, don't change them for us, assholes. Control's pretty bad in general.

Sneak up...kill, kill, kill some more. You know, Tenchu actually had other points to the gameplay, as did Metal Gear Solid 1 and 2 emphasized other elements (and killing was optional), and both were actually good games with solid, intuitive control. Also, when you play through those games, you don't get the nagging sensation that "hey, I'm doing the same shit over and over and it's getting boring."

Plus, the environments in those games are actually much more varied.

A] LMAO, touche! ;p

B] I'm almost inclined to agree with your sentiment. Though, I guess those aspects don't piss me off as much. I don't mind the camera angle issue that much, as it has yet to be a problem for me. The whole game isn't sneaking and killing. A lot of the latter levels are crazy shoot-outs and snipe-fests. I do, however, wish some of the environments were larger... But, such is life...
