They weren't the best band ever or anything, but they certainly recorded their fair share of great songs. There's nothing wrong with being a literate songwriter, either. The NME had a lot to do with splitting up the smiths, even though it was already going that way. Morrissey still hates them, but then he hates you and I and our mothers also. I do like OK Computer but it aint the best album of all time. Mystery said it best if this was 95 it would have been Oasis. Saying that the Smiths aren't a bad choice. If that's the case, then the Beatles would be #1, Stones #2, led Zeppelin #3, The Who #4, the Kinks #5 and so on and so on. Maybe the Smiths would be in the top ten but there is no way in holy fucking hell the Smiths are the best or most influential band EVER! And I like the Smiths music, really I do, BUT to blatantly ignore the contributions of the Beatles or Stones or whoever to not only music but to pop culture as a whole is just fucking asinine. In fairness to the NME, they wern't saying who were the best or most influential, but who had had most relevance to the NME as a paper. If you look at it on that level, I think the Smiths are a good choice. The NME is an pale, ailing version of its former self though, so who really cares.
