Guest HartFan86 Report post Posted April 17, 2002 What is your favorite opening to a wrestling PPV? I would HAVE to say Wrestlemania 14, 15, 17 or 18. Here's why: Wrestlemania 14 - Great video clips, the man's voice who describes it all is overwhelming, and probably most importantly, AWESOME and powerful music. Wrestlemania 15 - Once again, great video clips and pictures of WWF superstars, another awesome music piece that follows awesome with the video an emotional speech from Freddy Blassie, and something that REALLY got my excited for Wrestlemania and made me proud to be a WWF fan. Wrestlemania 17 - Another awesome opener with the best moments of Wrestlemania, another great speech, another awesome pick of music, and probably the last quote is the best with Vince "Welcome to Wrestlemania." Wrestlemania 18 - I know it just happened a month ago and still is fresh in my mind, but if this wasn't the best opening to a PPV, then I don't know what was. AMAZING video clips, AMAZING vocals on what Wrestlemania meant to people like Ric Flair, The Undertaker, HHH, Steve Austin, and The Rock, AMAZING music that is so fucking powerful (Don't tell me you don't mark out at that part of the music video right before Flair talks first), and by god, this got me ready for Wrestlemania (A Wrestlemania I thought was gunna suck...but obviously, in my opinion, didn't at all). Post your thoughts...I believe this will be a really intresting discussion.
Guest TheMikeSC Report post Posted April 17, 2002 I can't even explain why, but this past KOTR opening really worked for me. The words uttered really defined what the tournament was supposed to be about: "My Mind Is Spent. My Body Broken My Muscles Ache Lead Me To My Throne" Just worked for me. -=Mike
Guest Austin3164life Report post Posted April 17, 2002 I think that the opening to Survivor Series 1996 is excellent. The whole thing with Austin in a dark alley in black and white, and Bret Hart talking about how he wants to wrestle the best wrestler in the WWF, Steve Austin. It really got me pumped for that match, and the show.....
Guest SmarkySmark Report post Posted April 17, 2002 No Way Out 2000 "Some people say that's not a dream it's a nightmare....well it's my nightmare and I decide when it ends" - Mick Foley from the No Way Out 2000 intro WrestleMania 12, 15, 17, 18 Royal Rumble 2000 SummerSlam 2000.....yeah I actually liked this and the clips in Christian's TitanTron video were taken from this intro Armageddon
Guest Hogan Made Wrestling Report post Posted April 17, 2002 Armageddon 2000. It had that really cool version of "The End" and did a great job of hyping the Hell in a Cell 6-pack match. Royal Rumble 2002 was also very good with the portraits of past winners and sound clips from the shows.
Guest Kahran Ramsus Report post Posted April 17, 2002 Judgement Day 2000
Guest Report post Posted April 17, 2002 This past Survivor Series With the song "The End". It showed a lot of the past wwf stars. It had me pumped up for the main Event because they made it seem like the most important match ever. Unfortunatley in WWF land 5 months later all the alliance is back and its all forgotten. Guest Choken One Report post Posted April 17, 2002 McMahon's Utopia. Things in 60 Minutes. The End. The three best intros EVER.
Guest nWoScorpion Report post Posted April 17, 2002 This is weird, cause, you cant even count PPV's from before 1998 if you judge by the PPV stand point. Wasnt the theme for armageddon 2000 called sweet home alabama or soemthin? (cheeeeezy, just to get cheap pops)
Guest Jericholic82 Report post Posted April 17, 2002 Royal Rumble 2000, with HHH and Cactus talking Judgment Day 2000 KOTR 2000 wm 17 and 18 wm 14 wm 12 ST Valentines Day Massacre (yknow the one in black and white showcasing austin vs mcmahon) rumble 99 for some reason (well it has the cool no chance song in the background) No Mercy 2001 was pretty good, especially how it showed kurt angle with the belt and then suddenly drops it on the ground and looks surprised (represents him losing it so suddenly ) WM 13 was ok, showing the great history of wm then launching into a darker diatribe (this was right when attitude was in its infant stages) paraphrasing "Its wm, traditionally, the gandest stage, the greatest night in sports entertainment, a magical night where dreams become reality and superstars reing immortal... But this year, all is not light in utopia, this year clouds of hatred have eclipsed the heavens shed darkness upon the gods" and more crap 15 was awesome actually the one promo that still gives me chills is the Legends Attidue one they showed it on WM 14 try to watch ernie ladd waving to empty seats and not break down in tears anyways, thats all for now
Guest bps "The Truth" 21 Report post Posted April 17, 2002 I liked Vengeance. With the clips of the WCW and WWF champions throughout history leading up to the unification that night. I really enjoyed that. I also liked the WrestleMania 12 opening talking about the Iron Man match and Bret/Shawn.
Guest Report post Posted April 17, 2002 I liked the Invasion opener where they compared the invasion to WW2. RR2002 was great with the pics and sound bytes of past rumbles. I always thought the Vengeance opening was amazing wiht the shots of all the different champions. And, since it's fresh in my mind, WM18 where all the different wrestler talk about what WM means to them.
Guest Report post Posted April 17, 2002 AW! I wanted to do this thread! But oh well. Anyway some of my favorites were the 1997 WCW Starrcade one with Sting walking through the church ruins in the rain and the words:He walks through the shadows, he's seen the ruin of an empire, Now, he seeks the ruin of one man. That got me pumped up. Others were the WWF Breakdown Opening that had Vince have an army. Also: Survivor Series 1998:Cuz it's a Deadly Game Wrestlemania 15: Freddie Blassie Royal Rumble 2000:"They call you Triple H, They call you Cautcus Jack." Armageddon 2000: Atomic Bombs and "The End." Wrestlemania X-Seven:My Way or The Highway! Invasion: The WW2 clips really were cool Summerslam 2001: Let the Bodies Hit The Floor Judgement Day 2000:IN One Hour... No Mercy 2001: 3 Men... Survivor Series 2001: Old WWF clips and "The End" again Royal Rumble 2002: Memories. Btw, what was the opening for Wrestlemania 12?
Guest y2jailbait Report post Posted April 18, 2002 Ya know, WCW Never really had great openings to there Pay Per View's, But Slamboree 98 did a good job hyping the pay per view. Really most of WCW's openings were clips mixed with really bad production music, but that one was good for me, it caught me by surprise! Also, on a side note, that was the pay per view where Chris Jericho uttered my fav quote eva! "Here we go! Here is the winner of the Lou Ferigno Look a like contest, El Dandy!" Guest pinnacleofallthingsmanly Report post Posted April 18, 2002 I heard that the Hogan-Sting blowoff had a good video package. I liked the Summerslam 2001 and Armageddon 2000 intros.
Guest Report post Posted April 18, 2002 You guys will call me nuts for this one, but... ECW ppv, late 90's, i honestly can't tell you what show it was. The show starts with Styles and Gertner in the ring like always. But before Joey can start his speil, Candido comes out and talks about how Taz is a chump, and he'll whup him in the main event. Taz comes down, and after 3 minutes of wild hyper brawling, Taz hits a Tbone and chokes out Candido, and the main event is over 5 minutes into the show. Styles says something to the effect of "I have no clue what the fuck is going on here." All the matches were totally out of order for the rest of the night. And Joey was in constant confusion. It was kind of a bait and switch (Taz fought Bubba in a replacement main event), but it really got across how wild, unpredictable, and unintentionally hilarious ECW could be. Guest 5_moves_of_doom Report post Posted April 18, 2002 Pretty much everything in 2000, but namely RR and NWO with Foley's powerful speeches and the awesome clips shown. And also Judgment Day where it said what happened in an hour.
Guest Tony149 Report post Posted April 18, 2002 Consider this thread moving to the new General Wrestling folder an honor. I liked every WWF opening from 1998-1999. Judgment Day & Armageddon 2000 were also cool. WCW rarely did openings, but the WWF does a great job at those.
Guest dreamer420 Report post Posted April 18, 2002 The WWF always does a great job. I've heard that Michael Cole has put some of those together. Can anyone verify that?
Guest HartFan86 Report post Posted April 19, 2002 The WWF always does a great job. I've heard that Michael Cole has put some of those together. Can anyone verify that? If it's true, then he should stick with that and quit announcing.
Guest dreamer420 Report post Posted April 19, 2002 No shit. Actually maybe they have to let Cole host Smackdown! so he'll stay with the WWF and keep making videos. It's all about blackmail I tell you.
Guest Report post Posted April 20, 2002 I always liked the RR2000 (Cactus and HHH), RR99 (Ho Chi Me Chow! Chinese Announce Table!) and Over The Edge '98 (You will conform..) Actually, that RR99 one might not have been the opening video, I do remember seeing that Rock/Mankind promo though. Maybe that was just before their match. Guest dreamer420 Report post Posted April 20, 2002 You might be right about RR99 but I do know that "No Chance In Hell" does play before the PPV when the title graphics are loaded.
Guest The Great Wesuke Report post Posted April 20, 2002 I really liked SummerSlam 97, and no one has mentioned that one as of yet. I don't remember how it exactly went, but the theme was "Is it fair?" and it centered around Bret (having the USA turn their back on him), Michaels (his injuries), and Undertaker (the impending return of Kane... "haunted by his past" is how they put it). "Life... isn't fair. But whoever said it would be?" Then the old school SummerSlam theme hits and the announcers voice turns goofy and happy: "And now... Stridex presents! SummerSlam!" Oh well, it was cool up to that point.

In terms of PROMOS for a PPV (not the actual opening of the show), Mind Games had some kick-ass promos/ads. Something about Shawn Michaels having to "look into the mouth of madness" (Mankind) and that we should hope that he survives the insanity---"and pray for him if he does not" and it closes with Mankind's insane "Have a nice day". Just ultra-cool. -=Mike
Guest dreamer420 Report post Posted April 22, 2002 HAHAHA, that is what they are all like. "The Time is now, the place is here, the end has come" AND NOW TAMPAX, THE TAMPONS WITH MAXIMUM PROTECTION, PRESENTS WWF SUMMERSLAM 2002
Guest Mark4steamboat Report post Posted April 25, 2002 Wrestlemania 4/5(maybe both) with the slotmachine spitting out WWF coins. Just plain brilliant.
Guest The Hollywood Fashion Plate Report post Posted April 25, 2002 You can see the video clips for WM intros in the SLAM! Video Archives, which are at slam.ca i believe. My favorite Intro Videos: WM 13: ''WrestleMania is a time for celebration, a time to rejoice. But tonight, [clips of Taker, Sid, SCSA, and Austin angrily looking up the ramp] none of these men are smiling.'' Fully Loaded 2000: ''Their futures can change forever...with one roll of the dice.'' KOTR 2001: ''My mind-my mind-is spe-is spent.'' with the electric chair in the warehouse and the blinking lights really set the mood for me. I'll think of more later. Cool Animated Intros: WMX: I still mark out when I see the giant spinning X coming at me. KOTR 2000: Those swords were really cool! NWO 2002 WM7 By the way, did NWO2002 have an intro video? When I ordered it, it just went directly to the animated intro.
