Basketball Games

Recommended Posts

I was looking for a new game for my PS2, and while I had finally gotten the hang of and was doing well at Street Hoops (a HARD ass game until you get it), I bought ESPN Basketball.

I have to say that I like it, a lot. I'm still messing with the sliders so that I'm not blowing teams out by 50 or 60 points, but as far as actually having to think and do a little more on the court, its not bad in that regard. Shooting free throws is harder than it should be, you actually have to box guys out to get rebounds, and its not just a matter of doing a special juke move and go flying in for the dunk, as your defender will draw a charge more often than not.

the 24/7 mode is WAY hard, and I don't think I even want to mess with it at this point. I like the idea of building up your skills through doing certain things, but its just over the top with how difficult it is.

All in all, its not a bad game...

Anyone else got the basketball jones right now?

I get bored blowing teams out by 100+ points on Live 2004, but once I change the difficulty so the games are close, I tend to get into controller-throwing mode, which adds up in price pretty quickly.

Shooting free throws is harder than it should be,

Indeed. I shook many a fist and nearly blew many a lead while trying to figure out how to shoot free throws on the College equivalent of this game. It shouldn't take me the better part of an hour to learn how to shoot something as elementary as free throws. Of course, now I have it down to a science virtually, and don't miss too many free throws a game.

I have mainly been working on ESPN College Hoops myself. It is not a bad game, really. The only thing I really dislike is that it seems way too random for me. For instance, a bunch of teams who just aren't very good in real life seem to do very good in this game. Like my last season had Colorado as a number one seed, among other seed oddities that made no sense. It makes it very hard to tell how good I am at the game. Plus, for my team, I'd simulate against some jobber team and blow them by 30 on the road, then promptly simulate a loss to the same team at home(which is traditionally easier) by 20.

Otherwise, it is a fun enough game. Unfortunately, my first legacy was ruined because the game was defective, as it now looks like I will win my first national title with Cal State Fullerton. Not exactly how I wanted it, but I like their elephant logo.

I don't know about Live 2004, but ESPN NBA Basketball is just horrid this year. Sega took a MAJOR step back in its franchise.. the only redeeming aspect about the game would be 24/7 Mode. ESPN College Hoops is great.. it's gameplay is the best I've seen in a LONG while (beating out NBA2K3's).
