I loved this movie and there's nothing I disliked about it. Harvey Pekar isn't a great man, a successful man or even an happy man. Harvey Pekar is an ordinary man who works at a joyless dead end job and is a loser in life, but he finds a small level of fame by putting his extremely ordinary life in comic book form.

Some people won't care for this movie due to Harvey's negativity, which is sometimes overwhelming, but this is how the real Harvey is. This doesn't mean Harvey hates the world and his life. He seems to have no problem accepting his place in the world, he's just not a happy go lucky uplifting spirit type of guy.

I also loved how the movie was filmed. It had a great and original mix of styles. It had animation from illustrators of the comics and an documentary with the real Harvey and other real people from Harvey's life, which was all mixed in with the actual movie.

All and all it's a great movie for those who can accept a biopic about a man who's not great, successful, inspirational or influential.

I was completely blown away when I saw it, because I literally have not seen anything like it. Paul Giomatti was robbed of a very deserved Academy Award nomination...

fuck the WHOLE MOVIE was robbed of nominations

I love Johnny Depp, but Giamatti should've had his Oscar nom.

probably, however I was glad Johnny got nominated. His performance made Pirates one of the most talked about movies, and I believe that is what should get recognition at certain times. I haven't seen Cold Mountain and have only heard horrible, so I'd think maybe Giamatti in this place of Jude Law. Someone correct me if I am wrong though, because I have not caught Cold Mountain yet.

I saw both American Splendor and Cold Mountain, so I have seen both performances. While I too was very impressed with Giamatti, I was blown away by Law. I think he did a spectacular job in Cold Mountain and he defintely deserved the nomination. Who was the other nominee besides Law, Murray, Penn, and Depp anyway. I cant even remember who it was so I guess Giamatti could have took his spot.

Ben Kingsley for House of Sand and Fog and I hear he was great.

Jack Sparrow was a great character played wonderfully by Depp, but he shouldn't have been nominated for it. Depp was great fun to watch staggering around and talking like Keith Richards on LSD, but Giamatti gave a better acting performance. I actually didn't want Depp to win the Oscar, because too many people would've seen it as a weak win. Depp deserves to win for a stronger acting performance that no one can claim was weak.

actually, having seen him speak at my college, i can attest to the fact that harvey pekar is indeed a great man. very intelligent, humble, warm, funny, and stayed as long as anyone wanted him to for questions & autographs afterwards. i still have the signed ticket stub in my wallet.

I didn't mean it as an insult to him or anything like that. I also didn't mean it in a personal way. I'm not sure how to word what I meant, but people wouldn't see this movie and think "he was a great man" like they would for a movie about Lincoln or someone historic.

There should be little doubt to anyone that can see past his negative vibe, that Harvey Pekar is a good man.
