My favourite director of all time would have to be Stanley Kubrick...who are your favourites and who do you avoid like the plague?

Joel and Ethan Coen rock the house(can't remember off hand which one gets the directing credit). Can't stand Joel Schumacher, generally. I've never forgiven him for taking Tim Burton's cool, dark noir Batman and making him a goofy cartoon.

All time favorite is Peter Jackson.  Then is probably David Fincher.  Then the Coens... then after that, its usually a toss-up.

And I hate Ron Howard, but it's only been since the Oscars, and it probably won't last much longer.

the single greatest director of all time, bar none, without whom probably no director could have ever been seriously considered an artist: of course, orson welles.  he was the original breakthrough maverick director.  every director has his strengths, but i don't think anyone had quite as many strenths as welles did.  he always got great performances on film.  his sense of pure visuals (framing, lighting, everything) and sound were off the page.  his editing was revered.  above all, he knew how to tell a great story.

i also love lynch, scorsese, kurosawa, & paul thomas anderson, but i don't feel like writing a long, hyperbolizing paragraph about any of them.

spike lee's a big hit-or-miss guy: 'girl 6' and 'he got game' are 2 of the worst movies i've ever seen, but his good stuff ('do the right thing' and 'bamboozled') is enough to make him a great director.

there's no directors i can think of that i actively avoid, but there's plenty i think are overrated: coppola, peter jackson, fincher, guy ritchie, kevin smith, et al.

EDIT again: Fuck, I forgot Brian De Palma, who should of course be included on among my favorites.

A few that I can't put on the list because they haven't really made enough films for me to make a judgement on:

Wes Anderson

Darren Aronofsky

Bryan Singer

Ok, there's way too many to list, but here are my top 10. And just for fun, I'll put my favorite movie that each one has made.

1.) The Coens (The Big Lebowski)

2.) Quentin Terentino (Pulp Fiction)

3.) Martin Scorsese (Taxi Driver)

4.) Oliver Stone (Scarface)

5.) Stanley Kubrick (Clockwork Orange)

5.) David Lynch (Maholland Dr.)

6.) Alfred Hitchcock (Rear Window)

7.) Kevin Smith (Clerks)

8.) Ed Wood (Plan 9 from Outer Space)

9.) James Cameron (Terminator)

10.) George Lucas (Star Wars: The Emire Strike's Back)

The only one I try to avoid (even though he has made SOME good movies,) is Spike Lee. I also don't like Peter Jackson.

I like John Carpenter because he always sticks to his guns and never sold out just so he could do a big budget movie.

I also like Steven Spielberg, who I find to be the most talented mainstream director.

Another favourite of my is Terry Gilliam. I love Time Bandits and Baron Munchausen.

I'm shocked no one mentioned Billy Wilder. He's considered by many people to be the greatest director of all time. He's made some classics. Double Indemnity, The Lost Weekend, Sunset Blvd, Stalag 17 (my personal favorite),  Some Like it Hot, and the Apartment.
