Top five european champions

Recommended Posts

A much lamented belt the Euro Strap much like the TV title without the tradition behind it.

5. X-Pac (Actually a title strap that was ideal for him at the time when he was the X-Factoring face of DX, plus he put in some good performances with D-Lo over the gold in the classic DX/NoD feud)

4. William Regal (Is European Which always helps and he brought a pompus ass pride to the belt.  His old school heel shenanigans and mic heat just emphasises the point)

3. Kurt Angle (Short reign I know but for the few weeks Angle was the champ his audience work was first-rate telling people why suicide rates in USA had went up but in Madrid they were having street parties because he was the Euro-Continental Champ)

2. British Bulldog (A man the title almost seemed to be perfectly made for and when he was the first European Holder it was little surprise.  Defended it well but I will always remember the match against HBK at One Night Only where he lost as a classic especially in his own back yard talk about fearing a RIOT!!!. Anyway was given a token second reign when he returned all bloated and misguided what a shame!

1. D-Lo Brown (The Man who made the belt be recognised in all its seriousness his first reign from beating HHH was great mostly helped by the NoD/DX saga but how he changed his hometown every week and learned how to speak European he really made the belt his. When the belt was reintroduced with Mideon there was only one man who could further the belt's progress and that was D-Lo, your first Euro-Continental Champ and the GREATEST EUROPEAN CHAMP SO FAR!!!!

He hails from Helsinki you know!

*I don't think Shawn helped the European Title get over that much, because he and Helmsly just pissed on it that one "match" they had where Helmsly just pinned Shawn*

The European Title isn't one of my favorite titles, although there were a few guys that did carry the belt in distinct way. My Top 5 European Champions are:

5) Shawn Michaels

Although his reign was nothing special, he is Shawn Michaels. The title was mostly just a trophy for him as he moved onto his next WWF Title run. To be honest, he never really defended the title too many times, but I loved him. Best Match: against British Bulldog (One Night Only 09-20-97)

4) Eddie Guerrero

Eddy's first reign as European Champion was very acceptable as it was Eddy's first title in the WWF anyways. He had some exciting matches and helped bring back some value to the Title in early 2000. Best Match: against Essa Rios (Raw is War 2000)

3)  X-Pac

X-Pac's first reign as Champion was a good one as he defended the title on a regular basis and really established the title as a acceptable midcarders title in 1998. Great matches with Shane McMahon, D'Lo Brown and Gangrel helped him make his mark as one of the best European Champions of all-time. Best Match: against Shane McMahon (Wrestlemania XV)

2) British Bulldog

The British Bulldog defeated his brother-in-law Owen Hart in a tournament final to become the first-ever World Wrestling Federation European Champion. The match was a classic and will be remembered for years to come as one of (if not the best) European Title matches in history. This was the longest reign in the history of the title so far, a record 7 months. He defended the title against all comers, from Goldust to Ken Shamrock. Best Match: against Owen Hart (02-26-97).

1) D'Lo Brown

What can I say?, the guy made himself a legend with this title. He quickly went from being a no good NOD lacky to a dominant and credible Champion. "From Helsinki, Finland...D'Lo Brown!" Best Match: against Val Venis (Summerslam 98).

The belt has had its ups and downs. Some bad champions, some good champions. But overall, I think those 5 I selected are the best possible Champions I could think of, that made the European Title important and carried themselves as champions.

Honorable Mentions

- Owen Hart

- William Regal

- Shane McMahon

- Triple H

- Matt Hardy

I don't give a damn about (Like RVD said) The Euro-Trash belt enough to make a list. I do have a question though, why is Shawn Michaels making people's list? Just because of his name? He didn't do crap with it. He played his backstage Politic card that night to win it. From what I read it was planned months in advance that Davey Boy would go over and HBK refused that night. Anyway, did he ever defend the Friggen' belt? I only remember him going against (I think) Shamrock once or twice for it and then the Bullshit way he dropped it to Hunter.

If I was gonna throw out a few names though,

X-pac,

D'Lo

Davey Boy

Regal

Christian

Well, the word I remember was that Vince also put HBK over to give Bret a warning, that Vince wasn't afraid to take his title off and Vince wasn't going to stand for shit. And that he'd put the belt on HBK. But HBK did have a stance in it, though I don't think it was quite as large.

One Night Only: September 20, 1997 at The NEC in Birmingham, England:

Was Bret and Vince even having problems yet? I mean, Was Bret told that Vince wanted out of his contract at this point? If not, then I don't see what reason a warning needed to be sent to Bret about.

I have to concur with Fear about HBK. Why even consider him in the top 5 when he wasn't jackshit as champion? Hell, Kane was a friggin WWF Champion, but I never see HIM turn up on peoples' "Best of" lists.

Oh, and while I'm thinking about it.... how does Test rank as the worst Euro champ ever?

Mideon who? Crash what?

Given that he had a better reign that HBK did and didn't drop the title in a joke match, I don't see how his was "the worst ever".

Guest Jobber of the Week

Not enough people are including Al Snow. His gig of coming out dressed like the stereotypical commoner of the European Country of the Day was highly amusing.

Heh, good point... Al was pretty funny when he was Euro champion. I'd probably put him at 5 instead of Regal.

I seem to remember that Vince said to Davey Boy that he could go over Shawn on his own territory (Europe) however Vince, reneged on this due to his "difficulties" with Bret and probably foreseeing problems in the future with Bret.

Vince gave Davey Boy the BS that Shawn win the title and thus creating a lot of heat therefore guranteeing a bigger draw in the rematch which was "scheduled" to take place on the WWF's return to the UK (Manchester, near Davey Boy's hometown) in May that Year! As if Shawn would have wanted the Euro Title for like Eight Months! WAS NEVER GONNA HAPPEN!

The Ending to that PPV was soo intense no-one in the audience could believe the outcome and I watched the PPV live in my home and was shocked Bulldog jobbed in Europe, the fans looked so po-ed I geniunely thought they were going to tear the NEC to shreds.
