Capcom Announces Viewtiful Joe 2

Posted By Bebito Jackson on 04.23.04

Info, and game artwork inside.

As already announced in yesterday’s Thank God It’s Thursday News Report, Capcom has officially announced Viewtiful Joe 2 for GameCube and PlayStation 2. The game is scheduled to release in Japan in winter 2004 and is being developed by Capcom's recently created Clover Studio.

The game will have a mixture of 2D and 3D action, featuring both Joe and his girlfriend Silvia as playable characters. That’s right, the girlfriend gets a crack at it this time. There will be 40 new enemies, and a number of new environments, such as jungle, underground ruins, feudal Japan, snowy mountains and outer space. The heroes can transform into six different machines, which include cannon, drill, submarine and a race machine. The creator Atsushi Inaba mentioned that the game now comes to PS2 because he would like the Viewtiful Joe franchise to reach to more audiences (meaning they want more money). Both GameCube and PS2 versions should be “identical”. The game is currently 50% completed.

Check out some wicked character art below of not only our boy in Red, but also of the newly created “super” Silvia.

All I can say is YES!! I can not wait for this game.

Cool, Dante from the Devil May Cry series is going to be in Viewtiful Joe 2.

I haven't played the original yet, but a sequel to Viewtiful Joe sounds interesting. There aren't too many 2D games released these days, so this is pretty good news to me. How is the first game anyway? I picked up a GameCube not too long ago, and I'm looking for a decent game.

The first one is very cool. It's kinda like a mix of beat 'em up and platformer, but the slow-mo/hyper mode aspects add a unique twist to gameplay. The visual style is perhaps its most touted feature. I like it, but that alone isn't really a big deal to me. It's an odd and charming combination of old-school and new-school. It can get rather challenging, and I absolutely suck at getting decent Viewtiful ratings, but it's a very fun game.

However, the lack of passwords/save feature could be a turn off for some.

Most people I've heard have played it really liked it, with a few minor exceptions.

I made it to the Shark guy in the first one, and just lost total interest. While I enjoyed the game, I didn't care if I finished it. I keep debating on starting it up again

I assume no saving/passwords like the last game

Huh? There is a save feature in Joe. You can save after any level and there's checkpoints inbetween.

I thought the first was ok. I found it to be pretty overrated though. I didn't think the art and presentation was all that interesting. The whole "wacky Japanese" stuff has been done before and done funnier in other games. I also don't get all the hype about it being "innovative".
