QUESTION:

If it's an all-metal edition, why are Slipknot and SOAD on the list?

Metallica (up until Black Album): One of the best bands the world has ever seen.

Metallica (black album-present): Decent, not great, but better than what else passed for hard rock.

Slayer: What's to say? SLAYER~!

Pantera: Any band that can change their image and music within a year or two COMPLETELY and kick so much ass deserves my respect.

Cannibal Corpse: Decent death metal.

Slipknot: Okay band, nothing to really praise.

Six Feet Under: The worst death metal band of all-time...hence why I love them so much.

Morbid Angel: Not exactly into them...put they put on a REALLY BAD live show.

Iron Maiden: IRON FUCKING MAIDEN~! THEY FUCKING RULE~!

Judas Priest: Judas Priest started it all in Britain after Sabbath. Power metal began from Priest, and the rest of the metal styles formed from then on.

Megadeth: Dave may be an asshole, but the band kicks ass.

Testament: Never been a fan...

SOAD: Damn good "nu-metal" band, although they're definitely more pure HARD FUCKING ROCK than "nu-metal"...

EDIT: Oops, my bad, was in the hang of the "list your favorite song" posts from earlier.

Laz, this is more of a "What do you have to say about these bands" post than "List your favorite song".

Metallica (up until Black Album): some good singles, because of lars drumming i cant listen to them for more than a few songs

Metallica (black album-present): ditto, metallica's old stuff is overrated, and the new stuff is underrated. i dont think any one era was better than the other, really, except for the fact that cliff burton was a better bass player. they're just bigger assholes now.

Slayer: gods

Pantera: okay. its still funny to look at their old "power metal" photos. 'cowboys' has a few good songs, 'vulgar' too, but as overall albums the following discs were more solid, even if the standout tracks werent as solid as the standout tracks from the previous releases

Cannibal Corpse: talented musicians, shitty songwriters. always have been, always will be.

Slipknot: sounds like chaos ad era sepultura. gimmick makes them look foolish, but the music is what matters. i was surprised by their new disc. not the greatest band, but they dont deserve the bad rap they get either

Six Feet Under: shit

Morbid Angel: FF to the F and the older albums are good. Domination and Covenant suck.

Iron Maiden: great.

Judas Priest: never cared for the priest to be honest, dont like Halfords voice. never have.

Megadeth: as more time passes, i care for them less, but some of their older stuff is still fun

Testament: chuck billys voice sucks.

SOAD: creative as hell, a cross between slayer and the dead kennedys. total bay area influenced.

Metallica (up until Black Album):  One of the greatest, if not THE greatest, metal band EVER!!

Metallica (black album-present): Compared to what they did before...total dog shit now.

Slayer: Awesome band.  They still can kick ass after almost 2 decades unlike the other band mentioned above.

Pantera: Phil is a crazy motherfucker who has got the back-up to help him kick anyone's ass.  The boys from Texas have got my vote.

Cannibal Corpse:  Pretty good for a death metal band but I'm not a big fan.

Slipknot: Jazz metal band anyone?  Dogshit.

Six Feet Under: Please...

Morbid Angel: I've heard them a few times.  Nothing TOO offensive.

Iron Maiden: One of the Top 5 greatest of all time.

Judas Priest: Next to Sabbath, these guys are the demi-gods of metal.

Megadeth: I wish Dave would still have his hard on about Metallica.  They are getting older, but can still put out some good shit.

Testament: Right...

SOAD: The ONLY "nu-metal" band that has ANY hope of surviving in the upcoming years.

Metallica (up until Black Album): Excellent, ignite a revolution with Slayer & Megadeth

Metallica (black album-present): Crap

Iron Maiden: The new Formation is just plain F'n Amazing

Judas Priest: They need Rob

Megadeth: I dunno, this guy can get a great song and a kick @$$ album, and the next second a crappy album with $#itty songs.

Testament: Good band, very powerful.

Slayer: Extreme, not really on my taste, but this guys made history.

Sorry, the rest arent on my favs.

Metallica (up until Black Album): Friggin great! Ride the Lightning is a top ten album of all time.

Metallica (black album-present): Overexposed. Instead of making cutting edge music, they simply have put out crap. It Ain't My bitch is like the only song I can listen to from this era

Slayer: Eh. South of Heaven is tolerable

Pantera:Created the greatest metal theme ever: WALK!

Slipknot:No musical talent

Iron Maiden:Maiden pre-Fear of the dark is the shit! Piece of Mind is in my top 5 faves of all time.

Judas Priest:I enjoy Priest more than Sabbath. Live, the show is mindblowing!

Megadeth: A very hit or miss band. Think God for Morpheus since I can't listen to an entire album from these guys.

Testament: These guys lost me with the ballad.

Metallica (1981-1991)-Took Motorhead and jammed in NWOBHM in and became one of the 4 bands that re-invented Heavy Metal in the 80's. Overachievement posterboys

Metallica(1991-present)-Went from being one of the greatest metal bands to one of the 90's greatest rock bands. The change was too much for 90% of the fans to stomach.

Slayer-One of the big 4 of the 80's. Lost some steam over the last few years, but they can still knock it out when they want to.

Pantera-The numero uno band of the 90's.

Slipknot-It takes them 9 guys to do the job of 4. Pretty good indicator of skill there.

Iron Maiden-never got into them

Judas Priest-ditto

Megadeth-I wonder what it felt like for Dave to hang off of Metallica's collective nutsack for almost a decade?

Testament-Bay area thrash!

Cannibal Corpse-Personnaly I think Suffocation kills them.

Six Feet Under-Insert all negative adjectives in the english language here

Morbid Angel-Innovative

SOAD-Original. Hard to get into though.

Metallica (up until Black Album): Godlike, more or less.

Metallica (black album-present): Blech. This is hard rock, not metal.

Slayer: They're good for one or two songs...until you listen to the rest of them and realize they might as well all be the same song.

Pantera: PANTERA. GOOD.

Cannibal Corpse: I hate death metal.

Slipknot: I also hate crap metal.

Six Feet Under: Never heard of them.

Morbid Angel: See above

Iron Maiden: IRON MAIDEN. GOOD.

Judas Priest: Only like one or two songs. Overrated to me.

Megadeth: Pretty good, but sometimes Mustaine sounds like he has his nuts in a vice.

Testament: Never heard of them

SOAD: Overhyped and overrated. Boring.

Metallica: Very good. One of the best bands ever. Every one of their releases has been great. One of the siblings of metal. Hammet is of course amazing.

Slayer: One of the true metal bands out there. Their best days aren't behind them, they're jus as grea as they used to be. The drummer really makesthe band, in my opinion.

Pantera: One of the only 'hardcore' bands I like. These guys have nothing but a solid wall of good songs, with a couple of major hits ("Flood", "Walk".) My only problem is Darrel has to save alot of the songs.

Cannibal Corpse: Worthless garbage.

Slipknot: See above.

Six Feet Under: Not bad really, not great eithe though.

Iron Maiden: They're Iron fucking Maiden for chrissakes. What the fuck a I supposed to say?

Judas Priest: Fucking great. Uncles of metal.

Megadeth: One of the metal siblings. Excellent, and in my opinion, still going strong.

SOAD: They're not metal. Saying they are however, they have one good song and the rest is trash.

How'd I miss this one?

Metallica: Pre-Black Album: Yeah, like anyone in their right mind would diss old-school Metallica. We all know what the answer to this one is.

Post-Black Album: I don't have a problem with it. Re-Load only had about 2 good songs, but Load was decent. Could have done worse, and I personally think people don't like the albums just because they're not Metallica, but hey.

Slayer: I listen to 'em every now and again. Not one of my favorites, but a few good ones.

Pantera: Used to be really into 'em. Then I realized that everything after Far Beyond Driven was only out there to make everything seem heavier, and not to necessarily sound good. I love Cowboys from Hell, but Re-Inventing the Steel? Pah.

Cannibal Corpse: Death metal = crap. Period.

Slipknot: I like Wait and Bleed. That's all I have to say.

Six Feet Under: Remember what I said about Death metal?

Morbid Angel: These guys are Death metal too, ain't they? (Honestly, I can't recall. But I don't listen to them anyway, so there.)

Iron Maiden: GREATEST BAND EVER. Period. And to the guy who said he only liked Pre-Fear of the Dark, I have one thing to say - GET BRAVE NEW WORLD. Dickinson is your GOD.

Judas Priest: I think I'm the only person on the planet who would take new Priest over old Priest. Not that there's anything wrong with either, but  I like their newer songs, which seem more intricate then the basic riffs repeated over and over that they used to play.

Megadeth: I hate Mustaine's voice.

And I'll skip the rest, because I've got to go get my 100 proof. I only like SOAD of those ones anyway.

Judas Priest:

Megadeth:

Testament:

SOAD:

When you're talking about Metallica pre and post black album, which one actually INCLUDES the Black Album, as that is basically their best album, and I thought it was fucking great. In my opinion anyway. But I have this feeling that someone will open my eyes and tell me that's what changed them great- whatever. Just explain this one for me.

The Black Album is actually, in retrospect, Metallica's WORST album. Sure, a commercial success, and the mainstream media gobbled it up, but aside from "The Unforgiven," "Nothing Else Matters," and the overplayed "Enter Sandman," what other songs does it have that stand out? Only "Sad But True" and "My Friend Of Misery." The rest is all filler. That's 5 tracks out of 12 that are good, and 7 out of 12 that are filler.

How anybody could not say Master Of Puppets, Ride The Lightning, or ...And Justice For All when talking about the best Metallica album(s) is beyond me. Those albums were complete, as every song was complete, and not just randomly thrown together to press the album on date.

Let me preface this by saying that I haven't listened to much metal lately, so I'm pretty much ignorant of most things these bands have put out after around 1994.

Metallica (up until Black Album): (assuming this means up to and not including the Black Album) Um, fucking great. Put out some of the best albums ever.

Metallica (black album-present): I remember the day the Black Album came out. I woke up feeling so psyched, and went to bed enraged.

Slayer: Awesome. One of the greatest ever. "Angel of Death" still gets me in that headbanging mood every time I hear it. Did you know that Public Enemy sampled it in "She Watch Channel Zero"?

Pantera: Cowboys From Hell and Vulgar Display of Power spent a hell of a lot of time in my Walkman when I was in high school. "A New Level" is so fucking heavy, and it has the same effect on me that "Angel of Death" does. Far Beyond Driven didn't really do it for me, though, and none of its songs were especially memorable.

Cannibal Corpse: what I've heard of them has been unimpressive, plus their lyrics are pretty cheesy

Slipknot: no comment

Six Feet Under: who?

Morbid Angel: Their first three albums (the import-only Abominations of Desolation, Altars of Madness and Blessed Are The Sick) are possibly the greatest death metal I've ever heard (well, Abominations had shitty production, but most of its songs were later re-recorded and released on subsequent albums). I see that a lot of you aren't into them, but I highly, highly recommend Altars and Blessed..., and they had really good songs that were head and shoulders above most other death metal you may have heard. As The Goon said, Covenant and Domination were VERY disappointing (though the remade version of "Angel of Disease" off Covenant was quite good), with a horrible, muddy sound and boring songs. I haven't heard any of the songs off Formulas Fatal to the Flesh, but I read somewhere that it was a good album.

Iron Maiden: Good band, but I'm not as crazy about them as others are.

Judas Priest: same as above.

Megadeth: I stopped listening to them after Countdown to Extinction, but they were pretty good speed metal. I always thought that once they got clean, their music got worse.

Testament: Decent band up to Practice What You Preach. Good songs: "Greenhouse Effect", "Over the Wall", "The Ballad". Souls of Black was a bit disappointing, with a bunch of same-sounding songs.

SOAD: haven't heard enough of them to comment.

Metallica (up until Black Album): The best thrash metal band that has ever exsited

Metallica (black album-present): Great hard rock stuff, Hammett is basically just a waste. Good songs though

Slayer: Slayer is great band, but God Hates Us All blows.

Pantera: Excellent band.

Cannibal Corpse: Decent, nothin special

Slipknot: Horrible live, horrible altogether, need to drop useless members

Six Feet Under: nothin special.

Morbid Angel: never listen to them

Iron Maiden: Favourite band ever. Dickenson great lead vocalist

Judas Priest: Great hair-metal band. New stuff though sucks

Megadeth: Some excellent stuff by them, but Mustaine can be annoying at times.

Testament: Carbon Copy of Metallica

SOAD: Great first album, Toxicity was horrible
