Guest Genecide1 Posted April 21, 2002 Report Posted April 21, 2002 As mentioned above in my topic description I see there are a few boxers who can easily be compared to wrestlers in the current public eye. I'll start with comparing the current Undisputed Junior Welterweight Champion of the World Kostya Tszyu to Chris Benoit, everyone's internet darling. Outside of the boxing and wrestling world no one has a clue who either of these guys are but the hardcores have a great grasp of their talents and what they're capable of doing. However they do have their flaws which has hindered their rise to the top. For Tszyu it's his complete and utter inability to defend himself against fighters with speed who can stick hard shots on his chin and then move, ( Vince Philips and Zab Judah as evidence). For Benoit it's his colorless demeanor and inability to cut an exciting promo against a more charismatic opponent, ( The Rock and Chris Jericho as examples). Thank you. If the demand is great enough i will compare more boxers and wrestlers in the future
Guest Redhawk Posted April 23, 2002 Report Posted April 23, 2002 Lennox Lewis/Bret Hart -- They're not very likeable, but everyone has a grudging respect for them because they've accomplished so much in the ring. One whines about being screwed, the other is ready with the excuses as soon as he loses. Both had a serious real-life as well as in-ring feud with the more popular, charismatic stars of their era (Shawn Michaels, Mike Tyson).
Guest Genecide1 Posted April 23, 2002 Report Posted April 23, 2002 Here's another one: Zab Judah= Chris Jericho. Blessed with tons of natural talent but seemingly screwing it up every single time by his own hand. Jericho did it tons of times ( Triple Threat match at King of the Ring), Judah did it against Kostya Tszyu in the match that would have made him the best 140-pounder in the world. Anyone got any more?
Guest alkeiper Posted April 23, 2002 Report Posted April 23, 2002 ok, I'll bite..... Jack Dempsey-Steve Austin -both were bad-asses -both were great champions -both were hated at first, but went on to become the darlings of the audience.
Guest Genecide1 Posted April 23, 2002 Report Posted April 23, 2002 oh ok. I can come up with one better. Shawn Michaels= Floyd Mayweather Jr. Both are incredibly talented but seem to be haunted by the injury bug, and don't have trouble complaining about what they see to be problems with their company.
Guest Genecide1 Posted April 25, 2002 Report Posted April 25, 2002 Here's one: Roy Jones Jr= Hulk Hogan. the hardcore fight fans hate him because of his complete and utter inability to take even a moderately tough fight, much like the Hardcores here hate Hogan because of his propensity for holding down young stars. However the casual fan knows Jones and Hogan and will always pay to see them fight because they have name value and are immensely talented at what they do
Guest Redhawk Posted April 26, 2002 Report Posted April 26, 2002 In the same vein, how about Evander Holyfield and Hulk Hogan? Casual fans recognize the name, but real fans know it's time for each guy to hang it up. Don King/Vince McMahon -- Everyone hates the fact that they put themselves over on TV all the time, but you have to just deal with it because they pretty much run the industry.
Guest Genecide1 Posted April 26, 2002 Report Posted April 26, 2002 Here's another one. Mick Foley= Arturo Gatti. They've both taken beatings so severe they're sometimes uncomfortable to watch but they always give every fight 100 percent effort
Guest Redhawk Posted April 26, 2002 Report Posted April 26, 2002 Peter McNeely/Brooklyn Brawler -- Carved a gimmick out of the fact they really suck. McNeely had the Pizza Hut commercial where he got KO'd by a pepperoni, and Brawler is only used in comedy matches.
Guest What?! Posted April 26, 2002 Report Posted April 26, 2002 Mick Foley/George Foreman - One was hardcore while the other beat the crap out of you and when they got older, they became funny and fat, and shilled books or grills
Guest JerryDrake Posted April 26, 2002 Report Posted April 26, 2002 Mick Foley/George Foreman - One was hardcore while the other beat the crap out of you and when they got older, they became funny and fat, and shilled books or grills HAHAHA So true.
Guest Hogan Made Wrestling Posted April 26, 2002 Report Posted April 26, 2002 Ric Flair - Andrew Gollota Dirtiest players in the game...
Guest Hogan Made Wrestling Posted April 26, 2002 Report Posted April 26, 2002 Hollywood Hogan - Mike Tyson Both use biting to take control of a match...
Guest Genecide1 Posted April 27, 2002 Report Posted April 27, 2002 Here's just one more: Ricky Steamboat= Pernell Whitaker. Great natural talent but always known for losing to Julio Cesar Chavez in 2 fights that were among the best i have ever seen.
Guest Redhawk Posted April 28, 2002 Report Posted April 28, 2002 Whitaker fought Chavez twice? I know the first one was a draw. I think Whitaker got shafted against De La Hoya and against Chavez. Those might be the two fights you're talking about. And speaking of De La Hoya, how about The Rock/Oscar? Both seen as the pretty boys of the sport, and have the most mainstream outside success (Oscar's album, Rock's movies).
Guest Genecide1 Posted April 28, 2002 Report Posted April 28, 2002 Yeah that's a good one. See my problem here is that I am not a De La Hoya fan and thought Vargas was going to beat him, and still think he's going to beat him.
