Guest gwf0704 Report post Posted April 21, 2002 I saw him wrestle a few times on television when he was in Mid South Championship Wresting and I saw him feud with Ernie the Cat Ladd and a title shot with Ric Flair. I hear of the Blanchard-TA cage match but never have seen it. If not for his accident do you all think he would have been World Champion material?
Guest nWoScorpion Report post Posted April 21, 2002 He was good, especially after watching him/blanchard from starrcade 85 i believe. He was good, but nothing more then a upper midcarder. He had a few main event matches but nothing really notable.
Guest Report post Posted April 22, 2002 If the wrestling business was measured by wrestling ability then Magnum would not have gotten out of the midcard BUT of course it is not. Magnum would have indeed been in the title picture if not world champion by 1989 IF and only IF Dusty Rhodes would have still been in the NWA. They were very tight and Dusty like Hogan always helps out his friends. MAW
Guest Report post Posted April 22, 2002 Well, it wasn't just a friend of Dusty thing. Magnum was much more than that. Before the accident Magnum was considered a future top name by a lot of people. Of course, anyone who hasn't seen the I Quit match with Tully from Starrcade'85 should make an effort to find it. It has it all. Great psychology, it's brutal, and one the strongest finishes of all time. I envy anyone who has yet to see it for the first time. The match can be seen on a Starrcade'83 - 87 compilation that everyone should own. It's four hours of great mid 80's NWA. Hosted by Magnum btw.
Guest goodhelmet Report post Posted April 22, 2002 Magnum TA was watchable. His matches with Tully were always entertaining, but I maintain this is because tully is a great heel and wrestler. The cage match may seem kind of dull if compared to today's matches but it definitely isn't bad. And he would have been world champ material, without a doubt, until Vince bought him out and made him dress up like a member of the Village People. Just my theory. Guest krambigmac Report post Posted April 22, 2002 I believe Magnum was booked to win the title over Flair at Starrcade 86 but the accident happened and then Koloff got the shot. Someone was supposed to get a shot at Koloff's US belt then too but I forgot who.
Guest Black Tiger Report post Posted April 22, 2002 Magnum gets a lot of praise due to his accident but from what I've seen of him. He had the charisma of The Rock and the wrestling skills of Bret Hart. Starrcade '86 was supposed to be Koloff VS Magnum in an I Quit match because of how over Magnum got for the I Quit match in 1985. It would have probably been Flair VS Dusty (AGAIN!). Magnum would have been NWA champion by 1988 though.
