Sweet child o' mine

Recommended Posts

Guest Flyboy

I've always wonder who the hell the sweet CHILD was in the song?  Does anyone know?  I never figured it out... I always thought it was either his (Axl's) sister, mother, lover, or a close girl-friend of his.

Here's most of the song if it helps:

She's got a smile that it seems to me

Reminds me of childhood memories

Where everything

Was as fresh as the bright blue sky

Now and then when I see her face

She takes me away to that

special place

And if I stared too long

I'd probably break down and cry

Sweet child o' mine

Sweet love of mine

She's got eyes of the bluest skies

As if they thought of rain

I hate to look into those eyes

And see an ounce of pain

Her hair reminds me

of a warm safe place

Where as a child I'd hide

And pray for the thunder

And the rain

To quietly pass me by

*shrugs*  Oh well--I still love the song.  ^_^  :D

I'm almost positive it was about his former wife (girlfriend at the time) Erin Everly. She was the daughter of one of the Everly Bros. and Axl used to beat the shit out of her in his spare time. I'd have to dig up some of those old Circus and Metal Edge mags to comfirm it but I'm almost positive.

If he beat her, then what's with the line "I'd hate to look into those eyes and see an ounce of pain?" Is he ignoring pain he personally inflicted for purpose of the song, or was the song written in response to terrible guilt he felt for beating her after she left? Did she leave? I'm not up on G'NR history... I'm not even totally sure what "the spaghetti incident" was.

No, the song was written prior to their marriage and subsequent divorce. He probably didn't beat her ass until he became an eccentric, egomaniacal millionaire. As for the Spaghetti Incident, I have no idea what it refers to but I know the album is filled with subpar cover songs that should have never been remade.

the Spaghetti Incident is a reference to them fighting over the name of their next album while having a spaghetti dinner, i believe is what I read...

Ahh Circus Magazine, the National Enquirer of the music world. And Metal Edge, nothing but a bunch of fluffy bullshit.

Does Circus still exist?

Last I saw of Circus, I believe it dropped any pretense of being a "metal" or even a "hard rock" mag, and just covered pop music in general.

And yes, "Sweet Child..." was written for Erin Everly (who also shows up briefly in the video).

Funny thing is, back when MTV would actually occasionally play something besides boybands and Britney-clones (not that Britney was on TV then, but you get my drift), they had a Gn'R weekend, during which the band (read: Axl or Slash) would comment on the songs and/or videos. Now, Slash said he first played that opening solo (you know the one) as a joke, abd the the others really liked it and insisted they use it. Slash spent years hating that song...

...but I like it!

I dropped that magazine when they started printing articles about the New Kids On The Block. Can you believe that? And I was a subscriber for almost 4 years! They had the best pictures of any rock magazine, though.

Yes, the song is about Erin Everly.

Peace.

Yep, is about Erin Everly.

and about Circus, you guys hit the nail, I like Circus way back in late 80s when Hard Rock/Metal was the main event in music, but suddenly Circus began to use Pink or Neon colors on his covers and then... New Kids articles... ugh.

I have one more question about Sweet Child 'o Mine...

What do you think of Sherryl Crow's version?

IMO its a ** 1/2 version, and still I think she won a (Insert a huge laughter) Grammy. I mean, is almost the same song but with her band and her voice. My point is, is not a new version is the same song.

Isn't that how 95% of all covers are anyway?

I really like Sheryl Crow and I really like "Sweet Child O' Mine", but the combination of the two didn't really do it for me. I prefer her voice when she's singing in that husky way of hers, and she's just too shrill & annoying on this song.

Eh. the Sheryl Crow version of the song is absolute junk. Then again, I'm pretty anti-"Lilith Fair woe is me I'm a feminist dyke crap" anyway.
