***** Albums in Your Collection

Recommended Posts

What are the ***** albums that you all own. I'm not talking about albums that you like and listen to because they're popular at the moment, I'm, talking albums that most critics and any real fan of music would rate at the ***** level.

Mine:

Kind of Blue- Miles Davis

London Calling- The Clash

Exile on Main Street- The Rolling Stones

The Low-End Theory- A Tribe Called Quest

The Final Cut- Pink Floyd

The Wall- Pink Floyd

Disintegration- The Cure: I know some will disagree with me on this one, but I think it's a perfect album.

There may be one or two more, but I'll have to look through my collection. Those are just one off of the top of my head.

Well, it's hard to say what other people would rate at five star. Everyone has different opinions and tastes. Not to mention people whom write for publications have to worry about not pissing off too many people.

There are very few CD's that I own that I can listen to from beginning to end without wanting to skip at least one of the songs. Especially if it's an older CD where I've heard the singles from it thousands of times.

A few CD's that I can't fathom every getting tired of however are (excluded "Greatest Hits" albums):

Pearl Jam ~ Ten

Stone Temple Pilots ~ Core

Nirvana ~ Nevermind

Pink Floyd ~ Dark Side of the Moon

Candlebox ~ Candlebox

Guns N' Roses ~ Appetite for Destruction

Green Day ~ Dookie

Soundgarden ~ Superunknown

Live ~ Throwing Copper

Creed ~ My Own Prison

Seether ~ Disclaimer

Metallica ~ Black Album

The Offspring ~ Smash

Collective Soul ~ Hints, Allegations & Things Left Unsaid

I couldn't give a shit less what other people think about my favorite CD's. If someone else thinks what I listen to is garbage, then odds are I probably hate their tastes too.

The Final Cut- Pink Floyd

I know very few who would consider this album a five star one.

As for me, um, a lot. I don't have time to go and count right now, but I have copious amounts of Velvet Underground, Bob Dylan, Beatles, and Miles Davis albums, all four artists who are known for hitting the ***** mark with alarming frequency.

There's a few i'm forgetting and there's dozens of albums not far off at all but i'd be here all day. I've got no Beatles or Stones albums on CD, more fool me I know (I borrow my Dad's) but i'd only give them a couple or three each, i'm not even sure something like Revolver is really the flawless 5 star record its labelled as.

Guest The Winter Of My Discontent

This thread is so subjective, and the masses ideas of great albums is erroneous.

Guest The Winter Of My Discontent
Surely no discussion threads in this folder or any other, for that matter, can be objective. But yeah.

Erroneous is the key word.

I am one of those that will disagree with you on The Cure - Disintegration, as I picked it up expecting greatness and was sorely disappointed. As for my picks:

Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation

Pixies - Bossanova, Doolittle, Come on Pilgrim and Surfer Rosa

The Smiths – The Queen Is Dead, Meat Is Murder,

Nirvana – Nevermind

Radiohead – The Bends and OK Computer

There are probably a lot more, but I’m going by what other would call ***** albums. While I really don’t go by star ratings, if I were to do so I’d have a much higher standard. I’m of the thought process that a ***** album means it’s perfect, and that you like it for personal reasons in addition to its technical merits. Doolittle would probably be it for me, or maybe Siamese Dream, which many would say is a ***** album as well. The Queen Is Dead too.

This thread is so subjective, and the masses ideas of great albums is erroneous.

can't use "subjective" and "erroneous" in the same sentence and have them both mean anything.

i'm not even sure something like Revolver is really the flawless 5 star record its labelled as.

interesting. although i wouldn't call 'revolver' my favorite, i'd argue that, moreso than probably any other album, it is just about flawless.

anyway, from my collection...

rolling stones: 'sticky fingers', 'exile on main street'

beatles: 'abbey road', 'revolver', the white album, 'sgt pepper', 'rubber soul', 'a hard day's night'

jimi hendrix: electric ladyland, 'are you experienced?'

ween: 'the pod'

miles davis: 'kind of blue', 'sketches of spain', 'bitches brew', 'in a silent way'

john coltrane: 'a love supreme', 'ascension'

nirvana: 'nevermind'

sarah mclachlan: fumbling towards ecstasy

beastie boys: 'paul's boutique'

pink floyd: 'the wall'

bob dylan; 'blonde on blonde', 'highway 61 revisited', 'blood on the tracks'

the italicized ones are the "canonical" 5-star albums that i also think are around 5 stars. the plain ones are in the canon, but i don't really agree with. the bold ones are considered 5-star by me, but not by the canon.
