Dvd releases on 4/23

Allright, since someone else usually covers the mainstream, recent theatrical stuff, I thought I'd throw out some lesser know DVD releases for this week. The DVD's I list are only personal preference, but maybe there will be something that'll interest you.

Justice League: I believe this DVD is of the 1 hour series premiere. I'm especially interested in this because Justice League doesn't air in Canada, and I've only seen parts of it online. I really like the show, and hopefully more episodes will be released in the future (I'd prefer an entire season box set). I'd only recommend this DVD for people who really like the new gen animated DC shows.

Novocaine: A quirky dark comedy starring Steve Martin in a non "all out comedy" role and Helena Bonham Carter. The DVD is pretty loaded with features, so if you like the film it's worth getting.

Transformers Season 1: What can I say? I have been waiting for this release for ages. The box set has a lot of extra stuff for a TV release (take note Star Trek TNG) and if you loved this show as much as I did this is one DVD purchase that is required. Only for fans of the show.

Also to be released this week was the special edition of the Dune miniseries, but it has been delayed until 6/11.

There may be other interesting stuff that I missed, but this is at the top of my list. Besides, with the cost of the Transformers set, I couldn't afford much else anyway.

'Till next week.

Hmm Justice League DVD's are interesting. It's a quality show but i hardly ever remember when it's on so i've only seen a few episodes.

How much are we talking about for this Transformers box set? Yeah i know all i have to do is go to Amazon.com but i'm feeling lazy.

Yeah, I'm holding off on buying the DC animated DVDs until they start releasing season box sets. However, this new "Batman: TAS--The Legend Begins" thing seems like it'll be a substitute (it contains the first 5 episodes) for season sets. I may give in and pick that up.

I'm going to have to save my pennies for a long time to pick up that box set, if I want it at all... I already have the Transformers movie on DVD, and I've only watched it once.  I do NOT want the same thing to happen for a $50 box-set ;).

I'm really looking forward to renting Novocaine and Metropolis (even though I'm not really that big of an anime fan and will probably pick up Donnie Darko instead if they have it in stock for once), although for the latter there is one question that will probably bother me until the end of my days...

When is there going to be a GOOD version of the silent sci-fi classic Metropolis on DVD?! It's such a great film, particularly for a silent film.  I realize it exists as one of the greatest tragedies in all of film due to it being cut to ribbons with an hour of footage lost from even the most complete version, but the crap cut-to-even-more-ribbons-from-a-bad-print/sped-up releases of it out on DVD now are a travesty.  Can't Criterion or somebody get the rights to the Giorgio Moroder version or the most complete version from Berlin? I heard a rumor a couple months back that a good DVD release was coming, and sadly it's just that (probably due to confusion over the anime version)... what the HELL is wrong with DVD producers and fans ignoring this film?

Then again, The Day The Earth Stood Still isn't on DVD yet either, I was sure they were going to do some special release of it for its 50th anniversary last year...

Also, as for the Justice League release, I've seen a couple episodes, it's a pretty decent show, but if there's only going to be one one-hour episode on it, there better be a lot of bonus features, or a really low price tag.

Speaking of DC Animated, isn't the uncut Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker out this week as well?

wrt the box sets, the single discs are there to test the market to see if it will support a series of box sets.  WB did this with Friends, and as a result they're getting the box set treatment.

And yet another old series puts the bite on my wallet and makes Visa love me that much more.  I agree with you about ST:TNG.  I did like the extras included but there could have been more season one stuff included, I'm sure.

Speaking of Transformers, today (Wednesday) in your Local Comic Shop, the reprint of Transformers #1 by Dreamwave Studios should be out.  Get it, you might like it...

I wonder how much time passed between that "Best of Friends" DVD and next week's Friends Season 1. I guess I'll hold off (though technically, if I bought this, it would help the chances of a box set coming out).

Anyway, it's amazing that the ST: TNG sets are coming out at such a frantic pace. Season 3 is coming out in a few months, which is probably the point where I'm going to start collecting it.

evenflowDDT--let us know how Metropolis was. I'm thinking of renting it, too.

Hey areacode, I gave in to buying Batman TAS yesterday, as I really think that if they do release season sets, it won't be for a long while.  If you like the series, go get it right now.  I love it, and I've watched the DVD 2 times through already. The episodes are real solid (I like the ones featuring the Scarecrow and Poison Ivy the most here), and the quality is great.  The extras aren't much, but the producer of the show gives an introduction before each episode, so that's cool.  Hopefully, if they continue releasing the series 5 episodes on one DVD at a time, they'll release them every other month or so, as it will take somewhere in the neighborhood of 22 discs just for the FOX series of the show, and not the WB version.

Speaking of DC Animated, isn't the uncut Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker out this week as well?

Yes it is, and I hear the unedited version is quite good, and it featues a brand new commentary track on it as well. If I weren't broke, I probably would have picked that one up as well.

I went to see 'Novocaine' at a film fest. Really funny flick!

I loved Osamu Tezuka's 'Metropolis' - is it out on DVD as we speak??

Yes, it came out this week. Tezuka's "Adolf" manga is terrific, if you're interested in more of his stuff. It's available in fine comic shops everywhere.

Daredevil--Thanks for the suggestion. I just might pick it up. $15 (on Amazon) for 5 episodes really isn't bad.
